auroras and 300i's should not be able to hold their own against a hornet though. a hornet should win, all else being equal: it is the military dogfighter of the bunch.

but its not, originally the hornets pitch was that it was the demilitarized version of the fighter, but in this AC version you can attach up to 6 weapons to your Hornet depending on how many you have available in your hangar. My friends Ghost variant has only 2 very bad weapons on it for example. The trainer in the 0.9 is waaaay to powerful, mostly because of heavy hitting high ROF weapons that dont consume as much energy as the OS6's on a 300i.
And in the arena commander all ships should be relatively equal, there is no reason to make one all killing machine that only certain pledgers get while everybody else flies around being there to play target drone. Lore (hornet is a military ship so it should be better) should ALWAYS be second to fun. People who dont have a Hornet right now mostly dont log in anymore, so all you see is hornet v. hornet fights. is that really what you want? one all killing machine to rule everyhting? do people think their posts through before posting? jeeeez.
The same bullshit is going around in the CIG forums, every entitled hornet user is saying: "but i should win, its a military variant after all. Player skill doesnt matter! you might be better but meeee, i PAID more! SO I WIN!

what a load of crap
It would be madness for CIG to devote resources for balancing right now. There are tons of things that will be changed and therefore such an effort would be waste of time and resources. Arena commander will be unbalanced, partly broken and sometimes perhaps even unplayable; that's the expectations you should have. Test the flight model, provide feedback about the hud and the targeting system, those are the important aspects right now.
i agree with you fully! But that is also why they should make all trainer variants available to everyone regardless of pledge level, this creates a better a experience for everyone. Except for the few butthurt "but i paid mor than you" idiots.
it's a moot point though, once the persistent universe is out people can earn whatever ship / upgrades they want. any balancing will happening in beta once all of the ships / weapons are out as pointed out. i don't care too much about imbalance right now, it's pre-alpha. i totally agree with making ships / upgrades available for testing though. i really hope they have that mechanic once the game goes live, even if it's only available vs ia opponents.
also, pilot skill is still a determining factor in a dogfight, even now. if you don't know what you're doing, you'll still get your ass handed to you regardless of ship.
I bought a redeemer. I love 3 Dingos ship more but holy crap the FPS looks good in this game. I've been waiting for that mod more so than any other aspect.

And my other question: do you use joysticks to play?
The game is in alpha, so you can basically pre-order the game for $30 USD with the most basic package. Note that this package does not include any gameplay before release (i.e. no alpha/beta Arena Commander, no beta Persistent Universe).
The next basic package is $40 USD which is the same as above but includes beta access. No alpha access is included, which means that you can't play the game yet (maybe next fall if we're lucky).
The last basic package is $45 USD which includes alpha access to Arena Commander ONLY. Additional alpha modules (i.e. First Person Shooter) are NOT included but can be purchased for an additional $5 each.
One can purchase more expensive packages (make sure to check what the packages include under additional information) if you wish to pledge money to help fund the game's development. By no means are they mandatory, and on occasion CIG will allow people in alpha Arena Commander temporary access to other ships for a week. AFAIK this week they are giving access to the 300i.
Note that the game is planned to ship at a price tag of $60 USD whenever that happens.
EDIT: Joysticks!
One can use Mouse and Keyboard, Joysticks, and/or gamepads to play. You can combine functions of different input types if you go through the effort to make them function to your liking. Some players have taken to piloting with a Joystick and aiming with a mouse.
The game also offers peripheral support to devices such as Track IR and the Occulus Rift.
Keep in mind at this point control schemes are still being tweaked so if for some reason a controller acts weird/is broken, alpha is alpha.
Thanks, I consider pledging. I imagine playing this with some kind of cool joystick setup and an oculus rift... I don't know where I'll get the money for all that, but I will.
Also the first time that they reached $3 million before they even managed to release a letter from the Chairman, which is supposed to happen every $1 million! I wonder, as the number of pledgers increase, how much more the funding is going to increase. Because a good deal of that money seems to be coming from people who have already pledged who have a stable job, but who also enjoy regularly splurging on new, powerful looking ships, even if the price tag is $2500 or maybe more. So the level of donations during these big sales could continue to increase. I genuinely wonder how much money this game is going to make when it comes out, more than $100 million is a near certainty at this point, but will there be a geometric effect?
I even read a forum post with some people complaining about the timing of their sales, because they weren't prepared to spend $2500 to buy another ship, and felt let down by CIG because they didn't have the opportunity to give them all that money. Its just shocking! I don't think I've ever seen as devoted a group of gamers to any person or company, it is unfortunately cult-like at times (especially if you criticize anything CIG does, you get shot down immediately on the forums). Or maybe it just looks that way because there's almost no moderation.
Anyway, it certainly does look promising so far. That multi-crew update looks like a lot of fun for hardcore space sim gamers.

Its funny, about a year a go I predicted about 40 million , and now its like 60+ already, and still rolling crazy. Main reason being that there is no other AAA Space Sim out there. It does look promising indeed, but i i'm shocked myself how many many can one spend on different ships... I'll give a game another shot with the FPS, and new PC.
Arena commander, which is the ability to dogfight up to 5 ships currently, is available. The next version of AC is 1.0 which will up it to..... 20 ships? If you include the variants. FPS will be before June of next year.
The main multiplayer game will be fully persistent. Even missions from the single player campaign might take you in the persistent world.
I honestly don't know anymore what to think about the game. Pledged a while ago when the game was around 20 million dollars. The FPS presentation looked kinda good but I hope it also plays like it because the controls, camera etc. when running in the hangar is pretty clunky. Still it is alpha state so it might change a lot. We'll see.
