Hi,
Last weekend I had dinner with my friends family and we discussed all different things. But then we started talking about gaming. I have played some Dota2 but never SC. Anyway my friends brother started mentioned that he sometimes play Starcraft. I thought he meant SC2 but turns out he still play the old one. Anyway, he said it it mostly Koreans playing so he used a VPN and stuff due to bad connection. Then he said that he reached S rank with two races, Zerg and Terran.
I thought he was joking since he is like 35+ and have like 3 or 4 kids. Anyway, after dinner he actually logged into his account from my friends computer and showed us his profiles. He was S rank on all 3. Then he showed us a few replays. Both were Koreans but I remember he said one was ID “Ridesky” and the other I don’t recall. Anyway it was like 15 min games, they didn’t use the whole map or anything but it looked pretty good…
Anyway, how good is actually S rank?

S rank is not impressive at all and anyone can get them. There are higher ranks in starcraft 1 such as SS rank and SSS rank. Also Starcraft 1 is considerably an easier game than Starcraft 2 so getting S rank in Starcraft 1 is an equivalent of a silver rank in Starcraft 2. In conclusion your friend is terrible at the game and he's trying to impress random people who doesn't know about ranks in starcraft. Your friend also played the 2 easy race, zerg and terran, which diminish his ranking even further. He needs to get higher rank with the hardest race called protoss.

someone can correct me if im wrong but arent there a lot more s rank players than GMs? They way S rank works is its a cutoff at a certain player count u just need to reach a certain mmr to get in. That being said you could probably equate S rank to GM in terms of skill compared to rest of players in their game.

most S rankers have multiple ids at S level... just like OP friend

I mean depends what the cutoff is, he probably is even if there’s a giant gap between him and others.
But if you’re among the top 2/3/4/500 or w/e in the world in any kind of activity with a decently sized population you’re if not amongst the ‘best in the world’ you’re still pretty good at it

S rank is largely pros and top amateurs and their multitude of different IDs.

In such a competitive game when it comes to 1v1 S rank is as good as it gets. To get to that level you need to be on top of your mechanical and decision making game. This is because even small mistakes like delays of 1-2 seconds before making the right decision, couple of seconds of slow reaction etc can cost you the entire game where usually you invest around 15 minutes of your time and full concentrated effort. To sum up, it's very hard to get S and it requires a lot of time and dedication. Some people get there easier than others, but the overall games played, replays analyzed is almost always in the thousands.

S rank doesn't mean as much as it used to as most Koreans automatically leave vs foreigners because of the latency.
If they don't leave the game instantly, there's a good chance they will do an all-in build in hopes of getting out of the laggy game quickly with a free win. If you know an all-in build is likely to come, scouting quickly while playing safe and not taking risks will drastically increase your win-rate. I'm sure almost all high B ranks and all A ranks can eventually get S rank now because of this. I remember when Artosis moved to Canada and was bragging about S rank in a youtube video a while back... Something like 50 games played with 14 free wins because of Koreans instantly leaving.

Artosis was satire bragging. He knew it was a bit ridicilous.

I am actually quite shocked. He has like a full time job, wife and 4 kids (i asked). The first game he showed vs Ridesky he played zerg. He talked about that orange cloud thing that won him the game.
I asked my friend about the other one and he said it was Huyun (not sure about the spelling, can't find him on TL), or something like that - some Korean. Maybe someone know who that is? Anyway there he played Terran.
I will ask about his ID when I talk to them next time. They are from Germany so maybe some one know who he is - would be cool!
