Regardless, Earthbound is great ^^, and i'd still propose that infinity engine rpgs (or western rpgs or w/e) are far superior to their japanese alternatives.

in terms of storyline this title goes to xenogears which has the most extremely intricate and fleshed out plotline of any game i've ever played ever there are many contenders for best gameplay i don't even want to get into that debate

It's all subjective. I think it's more fruitful to discuss "good" or "great" RPGs

-games after Chrono were almost all ugly 3d affairs. -excellent use of music and visuals to convey a story. The written narrative by itself isn't everything. -the weaving of story time-travelling with gameplay time-travelling was innovative. -more approachable than FFVI, less pretentious. Sure FFVI was great but I don't think it makes CT a joke. They together raised the bar for interactive story-telling.

I think it's more fruitful to discuss "good" or "great" RPGs When I was hearing people saying "best RPG game ever", I wasn't exactly thinking it is going to be the "best", was just hoping that it came out decent. I'm going to refer to the Rule of Fun, the Rule of Cool, and Acceptable Breaks from Reality for this one. I agree with you that using the word "best" is not a convincing argument, though. When it is, I feel like slapping whoever said it across the face. uhmm, I'm ok with unrealistic stuff when it come to fiction, magic and stuff. But unrealistic characters, desires and goals does not make you feel related to the characters which is a big factor (for me). Also some people argue that the gameplay is innovative, remember I didn't play it back in the 1995, the gameplay is hugely outdated if it was innovative back then. P.S. I may sound angry in my OP because of the caps, but I can say I'm not (who gets angry over a finished game anyway?), I was just hugely dissapointed.
