What would their plan be with tanking? They're not Lolcat bad that they'd make a top 5 pick (heck, top 10 would be tough with the squad they had unless they sat a lot of guys) so I'm assuming they'd use it as part of trade bait to upgrade their roster. But who are you then targeting in trades/FA? The Bulls are good defensively so I'm guessing they go for a number 2 option type big? I'm not sure that there'd be much (realistically) available to them that would be much better than Boozer? It would give them massive financial flexibility to make a run at some FAs (Josh Smith comes to mind who would be a good fit IMO) but I think the Bulls' stregnth is in their depth and D. They were close to the Finals only a couple of years back and I don't think they need to drastically change their roster too much with Rose coming back. Amnestying Boozer would be a good move to free up cash but tanking could be dicey for them.

However, let's say Chicago hits draft day with pick #12 or something. They could do something like trade down by giving away Luol Deng, cash, their own #12 pick and a future pick for a lottery pick and hope they hit big. Then you'd have: Rose-x-Josh Smith-Gibson-Noah. X would hopefully be a potent 2 guard in this case on a rookie contract. You'd pretty much have a great team until contract extensions kick in again. ETA: And they do need to change the roster because they are missing the #1 thing that got them far these last 2 seasons: The bench. Without it they aren't even good enough to beat the Knicks or Philly. Rose is good but he isn't good enough to beat those teams without major help. That would take a massive leap in skill that I dont think he's capable of doing.

The FA list in 2014 is ridiculous too. (IMO of course) They'd be better off holding onto Boozer, playing out the year and then make a big push for a 2014 FA signing. 2014 FAs: Wade LBJ (don't laugh, it could happen again!) Melo Gay ZBo (health/sanity permitting) Amare (see how he goes this year) Bosh

8 Marco Belinelli 5 Carlos Boozer 21 Jimmy Butler 9 Luol Deng 44 Kyrylo Fesenko 22 Taj Gibson 32 Richard Hamilton 12 Kirk Hinrich 14 Marko Jaric 48 Nazr Mohammed 13 Joakim Noah 77 Vladimir Radmanovic 2 Nate Robinson 1 Derrick Rose 25 Marquis Teague Unless they sit Deng/Noah/Boozer (or amnesty) that's a high lotto team at best. I think a more likey scenario could involve amnestying Boozer, sign Josh Smith, use your TO in 2014 to get rid of Rip's $5 mill salary and make a play at someone like Rudy Gay and shift Deng's expiring for some useful role players. The Bulls are in win-now mode with Rose on the roster. They need to show Rose they're serious about winning and I don't think they can afford to be playing pin the tail on the donkey in the draft.

The new salary-cap ramifications means that we'll never see a max contract over $18 million for about 5 years. I believe that's just the rule of the CBA. Guys don't walk away for a guaranteed $20 million to go make $17 million (I believe none of these bolded guys have 10 years of service except Amare.) It's time for teams to look away from free agency as a way to procure and marquee superstar. Your best chance is the draft (obviously) and being very aggressive in the trade front. If you want to sign Amare or Zach to the max...I don't know how long you're going to be a general manager in the NBA. EDIT: Got some number wrong.

They might have something they, they (probably) might not. But you can afford to wait and see. I think signing JSmoove and Rudy Gay would be safer. With Noah at the 5 that's a pretty strong two-way team (and it's a pretty achieveable roster). The Heat probably won't disband--I agree there--but stranger things have happened. The Bulls can afford to be patient though until Rose is ready to go and I don't think tanking will be that beneficial for them. Adding a pick is a solid enough asset but I'd hate to see a team like that tank--it wouldn't be a good look for me.

Unless they want to trade for him, I don't think he'll be part of the Bulls. I still think the Bulls have a shot to be great - but the management is going to have to steer this ship carefully. They have a lot of bulky contracts on the books tied to relatively limited players. This was a fine plan when you have the most dynamic(not best) point guard in basketball on his way to superduper stardom, but it's not great when he gets hurt. Hopefully, he comes back and it just ties it all together. EDIT: Prepare to get your mind blown: Luol Deng + Joakim Noah for Monta Ellis+Sam Dlembert+Drew Gooden. The amnesty Boozer. Then you just swallow Gooden as, basically, half the cap hit of Boozer. You can crawl out from under Ellis in 2 season and Dalembert in 1 season. I mean, I think most people agree that Deng isn't part of the long term plan. Joakim Noah, I like, but he's not an replaceable player. Uhh..I just talked myself out of this trade. Rose, Ellis, Hamilton? Ack.

That's a great trade for the Bucks but no way Chicago does it =D Bulls would go from close to the best to close to the worst defensive team in three easy steps Looks like you're right about Gay--my bad.

They aren't even close to Boston's level and I think Indiana would have killed them in 5 last year. I see them as the #4 seed at best since BKN/Philly(maybe) should be better than them and all are in the same division with Boston. Honestly the Knicks age, terrible back court, and massive hope laying on Kidd/Camby/Raymond Felton (ughh)/Rasheed Wallace/ and Stat being anything besides a diversion with Melo on the court is asking a lot. They looked like shit vs Miami in the playoffs and not all of it had to do with the Heat's superior players. Just too many things need to go right for the Knicks to even dream of top 3. Let's be serious here, 50/50 for 8th seed.
