Well, people wanted Elder Scrolls gameplay with multiplayer, but we are instead getting MMO gameplay in the Elder Scrolls universe. The setting will be the only thing that is the same whereas the gameplay will be significantly different and more generic. There are already scans of the Game Informer preview floating around, and I've seen those same screenshots on major websites that are previewing the game.

There are some exceptions like EVE, Darkfall and Salem that try to do new stuff and succeed to some degree. At least help push the boundry of what is possible in an MMO. The general mainstream MMOs of today just make me want to puke though. I'm not suspecting this game to be any different from what I have seen.

edit: after reading some of the Game Informer stuff, it seems like the people making the game just don't "get it." They're going to be catering to MMO players who expect MMO styled controls. It's not even going to have TES styled skill leveling, proving that it in essence has nothing to do with TES from a gameplay point of view. It's probably going to be another 3rd person fantasy game with a button bar at the bottom of the screen and skill rotations. Morons... The sales of Skyrim shows that there are millions of people out there who want to play a deep, first person RPG that doesn't control like were many other games. How about going after those people, instead of an audience that will just go back to WOW or LOTRO once they novelty wears off..? I'm hoping for a TES online game, it could honestly be very cool. But I'm expecting a generic MMO game OK summery here http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3482784&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=1 this is as far from a TES-looking art style as I could ever imagine. It even has WOW shoulder pads.. I'm upset :\ edit #2: turns out the game director was a central figure on the development of Tabula Rasa? Did anybody else play that steaming pile of shit? Sigh.. TES Online looks like it's going to be a gigantic waste of a lot of potential

Furthermore, they don't have a good timing window to work with, release-wise. GW2 is going to be good, really good, and they're going to need to either A: release this MMO with better technology and gameplay than GW2 (not easy) or B: release this MMO after people start getting fatigued of GW2.

I can only imagine the bugs that would see release for this as well. I mean MMO's are infamous for being buggy on initial release but you combine that with how buggy TES games usually are and I am picturing horses on castle tops dropping houses on dragons in the market square while people run around willy-nilly. Actually that sounds a bit fun >.>
