You know games are fun and when you put in countless hours and passion just to get that headshot right where you want it to be . It is really satisfying seeing tomato juice flowing out from the end of the guy you shot in the head . Now you will be asking what the hell am I talking about ? No it's not call of duty and battlefield it's counter strike . A fairly easy game to pick up and to get addicted especially when you are crazy like me always wanting to get to the next adrenaline rush .
Now let's talk about old e-sports remember those days in the wcg ? People screaming over each other over a game ?? Yeah tell that to the guys who dedicated their life playing games for their passion. Back than e-sports was just a term label on us geeks who love to play game for passing of time and some of us were pretty good at what we were doing .
If you ask me old e-sports was the days when counter strike was still the king, starcraft broodwar was the number one RTS game in wcg, quake was still rampant and alive with fans fragging each other with railguns and boosting themselves with rocket launchers . It's just insane how fast this guys can click at the sign of a single pixel and get's their headshot . We use to refer to these games as competitive gaming because it takes skills . It isn't about the limitation of graphics, the user interface, AI retarded , but playing the game we love . I think players these day want's to give too much control to developers rather than trying to figure out how to play the game the itself and discover tactics to over come the game technicalities.
Take broodwar for example, so many players complain about how difficult macro was in broodwar however when you learn to deal with the problems and play the game it self .Every win you take from the game makes you satisfied in it . I know my self when I trained hours and hours in to the game of counter strike when I made a 1 v 5 come back from a really dire situation . I felt like I was in heaven momentarily because I didn't think I was possible but hey finally my reflex were much faster and my shots were more accurate because I trained for hours .
I have always respected quake players for their lightning reflexes they are so fast that a single dot that appears on the screen I bet they clicked on it at 0.02 seconds on just a heart beat . Counter strike a game where you plays the CT/T to win it's either to eliminate entire opposing force or win by destroying the bomb site .
Now what makes the game of counter strike appealing to the generations back than ? Cs was originally made and was based on the quake engine although modified a bit and yet it's played by many because shooting people in the head never felt so satisfying like this before. Also it's all about adrenaline rush you get when you are able to make a frag and all killed the opposing team when situation requires to do so . Call me an adrenaline junkie but I like to live my life in action
What was so attractive about this games that the younger generations could not understand how we old dinosaurs love this game ? It's simple back than even though how primitive the game engine were we had LAN, games were addictive because getting in to the game it's simple remember back about WON ? How about thousands quake 3 server being registered on your browser list ?
I think we could never go back to the days when old counter strike, broodwar and quake will ever reach their glorious status ever. With games like CoD,BF3 and other countless shining games out there it will never beat this old time classic . No matter how old it feels you know that if you install the game back in to your system the game will remain the same . Solid as ever, Nostalgia maybe but if you can still play the game right now with a competitive scene .I wouldn't call that nostalgia .
I would like to highlights what I have said maybe we should return to the days where e-sport is the game it self rather than about using the word e-sport to support the scene . How about talking about the game and living the game it self is e-sport ? Action speaks more than words and saying for e-sports is not going to change anything . If you want e-sports to flourish you have to get yourself involve with the game . Go for the LaN session, meet fnatic. Carn and talk about how you are a big fan of him , Go to Copenhagen for the amazing games that are being broadcasted live .
I would like to close this by saying that we are really stubborn and die hard fans who will never let go something that we have grown to love from our younger days that is playing this games for fun and even as an adult I find it hard to see that games that are previously considered to be national sports of the country for example starcraft is going to be siphon out of the system replaced by a superior sequel with newbie friendly guidance included in it's system. I am always tempted to say Broodwar for life and probably will do that silently until the pro scene is over.
I know it's a long rant and probably not many will read this however here is some frag movies that I want to share with whoever is a fan of fps games and starcraft and thanks for reading it . If it's the end for us oldies who enjoy the game than I would gladly accept it and let the young guns take over it however always remember that it is this game which were much faster, meaner, requires more skill that actually shape the scene to where it is today .
Cs 1.6
Yup Cs source the game That I wanted to go pro in but you know CGS died too fast before I got a chance to even qualify for a team.
Broodwar the best RTS back than and still is
Last not but not least the Quake series watch fatality make a come back from what it seems to be an easy win for his opponent.
U gotta watch The Contenders 1 & 2 its a quake 3 CPMA movie (well 2 movies) Thats the reason why I was playing cpma again, sickest frag video i have ever seen, even better than annihilation 2 u can find the videos on pldx.com, too bad I came too late and the NA channel was a bit dead but they still played a lot on europe
Love the write-up. Sums up so much about us "old-school gamers". Guess we're just the old senile geezers now yelling at these kids and their new-fangled games.
What do you mean cs was based on the quake engine? It's a Half-life mod...
Also, when I install old games, they just aren't the same. My memories of them are always wy, way greater than the games actually are. That's just my 2 cents though, could be very different than you

Take a look at this and than come back to me okay ?
GoldSrc, also known as Goldsource, refers to the heavily modified QuakeWorld engine codebase, which in turn is a development of the Quake engine's codebase.[1] Some minor fixes from the Quake II engine were incorporated as it was developed.[2] It is the engine made for and used in the game Half-Life , and the very same engine that powers its subsequent modifications, such as Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero Deleted Scenes, Counter-Strike Neo and most recently, Counter-Strike Online.
Memories .... I still play broodwar it still feels the same as the day I install on my windows 98 back than.

Look up Le Minh's mod "Navy Seals". Apparently the idea of counter-strike derives from it. (I would make a bigger post but my QVGA phone is doing me in

This. Nothing about DotA makes me a very sad Panda... Also I LOVED Unreal tournament(GOTY) original... Will never forget Morpheus, Hyperblast etc.. Quake for me was all about DM 17 and the madness that inevitably ensued. CS:Source was also among the very best of times...

On a slight tangent, your comment fascinates me on a deeper level because what we're seeing here, though we may not recognise it, is the way in which technology and money drives movement and change within society faster than ever before. The image of the granddad on the porch is indicative of a long, slow period of change which he has lived through in order to become as he is. In our current day and age, it has taken only a few years, and society shifts in general much quicker, in every way, all across the board!
Further along my train of thought, I consider how many lifetimes' worth of change we as a generation get to see, and what an incredible thing this is- provided the change isn't expedited to the point of bringing about our end within the next 80 years. Even then, it would be vaguely fascinating to be present as humanity destroys itself.

- Cpma done by vo0, all one needs. The map control/awareness, the prediction, the goddamn aim - the flash of cpma. The last four minutes or so are especially retarded.

I am still trying to pick my jaw from the ground this vo0 guy is just sick ..
I didn't realize Half-Life's engine was based on Quake's. Thanks for informing me. I suppose I was mainly confused because your wording in the OP made it sound like counter-strike was built with quake engine, without acknowledging the step in between, where Valve apparently heavily modified Quake's engine for Half-Life.

I tried installing brood war a few months ago, and couldn't make it through the first few missions of the campaign without just feeling like a) it looks terrible, b) it is way too difficult to control basic things, c) it's just not as fun as I remember. But hey, if it's still fun for you, definitely keep playing it! I just always get sad when I try to install old games and then find myself really disappointed.

About the Quake 2 engine used for Half-Life one has to give all the credit to Valve here, comparing Half-Life to Quake 2 visually is like comparing a cadillac with an rusty ford. What they did with the Q2 engine is nothing short of amazing, and i think at the time it created alot of hype for Valve aswell since i distinctively remember reading a review in a physical magazine(omg im so old lol) where they were simply dumbstruck how good the game looked while using an even then relatively old engine.

Yes i think he pretty much won every single 1v1 cpma tournament he ever entered or something, he was more then the flash of cpma, he was the god of cpma. He also dominated a cpma:esque game later called Painkiller, it was used in the CPL world tour among other things. He lost the main finals to Fatality sadly, after dominating the entire circuit.
