So, trying to just stay laid back, relaxed and just play a fun game, win or lose...and I played by far the best game I've ever played. Not by my account: I sent the game to a Master league buddy for critique and thoughts on my strategy (Brood Ultra at same time??) and he was blown away by my improvement. He called this game proof that I can improve and that my mechanics aren't wretched. ROFL!
As a breakdown, it was on Tal'darim Altar LE.
My opponent started off with a really strong cannon rush on my nat, dropping 3 pylons and 2 cannons behind my minerals before he was done, which I destroyed with minimal losses.
After that, quickly scouting I saw the FFE I was expecting, both based on the cannon rush and the map.
So, I quickly went to work on the 3rd rocks and opened up the expansion there so I could keep up with his econ and production.
He poked into my main ramp with a couple of sacrificial stalkers and then assaulted my 3rd with his prepped 6-gate.
The forces I was preparing weren't ready QUITE soon enough to save the 3rd...
...but pushed his attack back quickly.
And let me re-secure the area.
He tried a second poke into my nat with a pylon on the low ground, but it was spotted and the attack gained him nothing.
By then, I was moving into Hive tech and I was ready...
...to face his Army. I cleaned up his main army except for a few void rays that he sent to my base. They were met by reinforcements and dispatched.
Though, his reinforcements found my 5th and were able to kill it before I could respond, I caught his forces and destroyed them before they could escape.
Re-engaging near his 4th, I crushed the last of his forces.
And secured the victory for the swarm.

<3 battle reports, FOR THE SWARRRM :D

Pretty neat to see you mixing it up with the high zerg tech instead of just automatically going for straight broodlord, which is usually my instinct when playing zerg, then get crushed by blink stalkers >_< Congrats on the win : )

BLs are hella more powerful with ul;tras under them. ultras do splash damage so if they blink stalkers in, ultras will get perfect surround.
that said its disgusting how ultras are 6 food when they were 4 in bw, while BLs are 4 food like their bw guardian counterpart.
Also, I have a bone to pick with the idea that people should be "off roach tech" late game. As if Terrans don't use T1 all game, and protoss don't either.
Zerg in bw was viable for its low tech units late game, hell, they were designed around using masses of those units. I just think it says something about the game if the conception of most players towards zerg is "you still have roaches late game you lose". Noone says that about terran marines or protoss zealot/stalker.
It's nice to go for ultras because they splash damage and they damage soak. If you design a build where you get huge armor ups fast, ultras are the first tech you want to work with. they also spawn faster than BLs, which is extremely useful on XNC, and they're the go to unit to protect your hydras (if only hydras had at LEAST 2.75 speed..)

Well, my masters buddy's response to the unit comp was that BL/roach/infestor would have been better because ultras aren't cost effective in terms of mins/gas or food. Plus you have to spend the money for the ultra cave and the ultra armor upgrade to make them worthwhile. However, he said it didn't matter at that point because I had the other guy so outmacro'd I could have won with just about anything.

I played a game yesterday where the guy went into expand - archon zealot stalker. I was upgrading melee and carapace at the time and finally got a third up and transitioned into ultra roach and was able to kill his colossus archon zealot stalker army when he was 2 base 1 gold and then steamroll win with constant ultra ling production after. The fight was neck and neck until then, and there wasnt any other unit comp that would've saved me at the moment he hit, and BLs would come out too late.
remember that ultras are so big that if archons are hitting them, nothing else takes splash damage. its hilarious watching lings kill archons because theyre standing next to the ultra who's tanking the archon shots
