It's an iconic adventure composition, so no, chances are slim they "stole" anything. Having said that, it is still amusing enough to have been pointed out four separate times in the thread so far.
Ok, well I guess I'm slow. And shouldn't have used the word steal, but I think it was done on purpose, especially since that fan-art seems to be one of the more popular/better done ones. Also, what makes it an iconic adventure composition? Where else has this image been used?
It's quite cliche.
But the show's team has said they don't read fanfics, I don't see why they would look at fanart either, let alone copy it.

One can't exactly search for "adventurer narrowly escaping the jaws of a crocodile", but at least to me it doesn't sound like a particularly groundbreaking scene.

Actually, in the AMA Jayson Thiessen did on r/MLP, he mentioned that they have a lot of fan art put up around the studio. It's not unrealistic to assume they might have seen that particular piece of fan art and put in a shout-out, but that's a question for them to answer.
I watched a couple of episodes of this out of curiosity a while ago. I felt ill and nauseous after watching and then I looked in a mirror and said "What the fuck did I just do." Its fine to enjoy whatever you want, but I just do not understand the appeal of this to grown men whatsoever. Its rainbow coloured ponies, prancing around in a fairy tale place, doing childish things. Those things are all the complete opposite to what I enjoy in EVERYTHING I do for fun.
Take Starcraft 2 for example. Yes they are coloured, but only for team distinction. Charging around aggressively yelling, killing each other in a non-fairy tale, but sci-fi reality, killing the living shit out of each other, with guns and bombs and lasers and swords and acid and claws and teeth and mother fucking MIND BULLETS.
Like I said, I cannot see the appeal of this whatsoever. Other things baffle me such as Religion, yet I can understand why some people follow it. There are reasons, even if sometimes stupid or misguided, for why people do things. Yet I can't see them for MLP. I just can't. Rant over.

There was no need to post this at all, what can be discussed here since you have clearly made up your mind, what point is there to argue with someone who feels ill watching a TV show (really? I highly doubt it) since they clearly will not change their opinion.
as you can see with StarSider's posts if you would actually approach with questions or at least proper points people are willing to reply with reasoned responses, all you will get with a rant that no one is interested in even slightly is exasperated replies or just ignored.
Edit: I really don't get your Starcraft example at all, since everyone who posts in this thread is also a Starcraft 2 or Starcraft Brood war fan, heck we watch and discuss starcraft streams every single day in our IRC chat, so obviously one thing is not exclusive of the other.
If you don't enjoy the show thats fine but please take your rants elsewhere.
So at the end of last week's episode I could hear the voice of The Hub going on about a bunch fan-voted episodes being shown next week or starting next week. Does that mean no new episode? Does it mean no new episodes until all the fan-voted ones have aired!? I'm getting my chaise longue ready for the faint.

On Saturday they air a marathon of top voted episodes leading up to the new one.
So there has just been a comic released based on the fanfic My Little Dashie... I don't recommend checking the comic out if you haven't read the fanfic yet and/or if you don't want to shed manly tears right now... + Show Spoiler [link] +
The Fluttershy artworks are the best :D I think my favourite line so far in the show has to be:

I can't see why this is disliked in this thread. I am glad that you take your time to make this post, and be content about it. It might not have been your best choice to watch the episodes, but kudos for you trying to understand this fandom.
Mostly, in my experience, us "bronies" just enjoy something new, instead of aggressive games and action movies. It's a nice feel to get acquainted with another theme of entertaining, that is pleasing to the eyes. I admit I sometimes really get the feel that it must be wrong to like these ponies, yet I still do, because I find happiness and creativity in them, and the community is so nice and helpful.
It made me start draw for just about a half year ago now (Time flies!) and in my opinion, ponies are a great way to start on this, as they are simple to draw, yet easy to challenge yourself with in any creative way.
Yet, everyone to their tastes, and I admire you for trying it, even though you disliked it.
Ok! I have made my second strip of the pinkie pie comic, and it is going to be 3 strips long. First I said it would be a quick 1 strip, and later I found out it was too big to fit one, and I adjusted it to two, and now it's adjusted to 3 strips, hehe.
I usually roam the mmo-c forum where I first started with ponies and a few people there are making a group drawing of all the OC's and I had to make my own OC, and it came out quite nicely.
