I've come to discover the joys in melodic death metal.. Now, I was always aware of this sub genre, however, as metalcore/groovemetal/death metal typa guy, I never took the time out of my day to really examine and listen to such bands.
How foolish of me.
I now have 10 fold more respect for the magnificent country that is Sweden.. Producing bands like Soilwork, In Flames and Arch Enemy? Bravo, truly. These bands are nothing short of spectacular.
The instrumentals is light years a head which is coming out of the US. Drummers like Dirk Verbeuren are leading the way with his blitzing fast blast beats and creativity like no other.
For instance, while recording drums with legendary metal head Devin Townsend, on a track called "cheeseburger", Dirk came up with a blast beat which is like nothing I have ever heard. In it's simplest form it's nothing fancy, however, no drummer would have ever thought of laying a flam-triplet over the top of a straight blast. Pure genius. I've incorporated such a blast, now known as the 'Dirk Blast' into my daily routine and rhythm bank. It simply destroys. When I jam with my mates or play a gig, people are always asking me, "what is that beat you played there, it seems so complex". I just giggle and simple explain to them that it's nothing more than a triplet.
I very much wish to see such bands as In Flames and Soilwork in the near future, however with my location, the chances of this are close to null.
What are some other cool bands I should get into? hit me up bros!
Also, with the last facebook (pre timeline) there was a friends list feature which displayed 10 links to friends, this was of course random, changing each time you refreshed the page. However, with this new timeline, there is a new friends list, which now shows six icons of friends. This however is tripping me out and does not appear to be random (well in some cases it seems to be), when I refresh, there is at least two people who are always displayed, and very really change?
Is there some sort of underlying reason for this in which I'm unaware of? Or is it simply some epic coincidence and infact purely random.
EDIT: the reason some people show up more than others in your friends thingy, is because they are the ones who you either interact with the most, or they view your profile the most and vice versa. So it is in fact not random this time around. Woohoo!
At the gates and dark tranquility are two amazing bands you check out. Also, check out darkest hour, an american melodeath/metalcore band (in particular, the album undoing ruin).
Opeth can be pretty good, but the average length of their songs (like 4 hours) can sometimes put me off. Obviously exaggerating, but their songs are VERY long.

Oh yes Opeth, unfortunately for me, a good mate of mine recommenced me this band some time ago, I never really took the time to listen to them. Will do now!
The bands Canas mentioned are all really good. Sadly, In Flames aren't what they used to be. They're more pop rock now than anything else. Everything pre-clayman are masterpieces though.

Are you talking about the song "Deconstruction" by the "Devin Townsend Project"? If so, which part do you mean? I'm no specialist but a die-hard metal fan and I would love to hear this revolutionary drum pattern.

Yes indeed!! I'll link you a video to Dirk explaining the beat
If you're a drummer dude, you gotta use this. I've used it in a few jazz routines, but not using the open hi hat, it sounds really cool in a lot of different situations.

I've noticed this too! The latest album is much more melodic, in fact, it contains zero traces of any form of death metal in my book. The album prior, 'a sense of purpose' had some really great tracks and was much more of a metal sound, but still very different from earlier work. Still I have a very wide music taste, and although it wasn't exactly what I was expecting or hoping for out of In Flames it was still a very good album.
The Jester Race, Whoracle and Colony are the best In Flames albums by far, their other stuff can be ok sometimes, but it still doesn't hold a candle to the three albums I mentioned. Most people just say "the old stuff", but Subterranean isn't really a full album with only 5 songs, and Lunar Strain isn't very good imo.
