i went straight to winterhold after i killed the first dragon. during part of the quest i went on a short side trip up a mountain close to a fort where you get a book and ran into krosis + a dragon. I was level 8. It was hell.
But...literally everything in the game scales to your level to a degree.
Except for a few things like Morakhai (or whatever that bastard's name is) that literally just almost one shot you if you don't have resistance yet.

I went to Winterhold at level 1 or 2.
As soon as I got out of the cave at the beginning, I went north to Whiterun Stables and took the carriage there, skipping the first quests entirely. The levels still scale when you enter a new area for the first time (so the mobs around Winterhold will always be level 1-2 now), so you can go there at any time. Saarthul (first mage quest) was very very easy on Master difficulty even at level 3.
The scaling is weird though. I'm level 10 now and I went into the ruins under Malkrath and got my face handed back to me on a silver platter (1 shot kills).

(I'm the original poster) I ended up in the ER last nite, but I'm starting to feel better I think. I hope I'll be able to update the OP tomorrow when I wake up. Thanks for all the input guys!

Is there a mod or something to make a left-handed character? The shield in left hand only really stinks
|
Thanks for all the responses! I had no idea skyrim did the level scaling by region!
Edit: Just a note, I've since discovered that you can cast magelight on living things and it will follow them around. So if you're a mage, let lydia hold a shield, cast magelight on her, she acts as a torch.

Anyone want a mind-fuck? This has drove me crazy for about 10 minutes trying to figure out how the hell it is there... I was updating the OP and after doing so there is this random [/b] (end of bold) in between Character Builds and Leveling Tips. It's not shown as a part of either spoiler, so it has to be in-between the 2 spoilers, but it isnt...
+ Show Spoiler [The ghost /b error] +
+ Show Spoiler [The picture of the code] +
Edit: I figured it out, I had a mis-placed [/b] in one of the character builds but for some reason it decided to place it as not part of the character builds and moved to completely out of the entire spoiler... pretty weird.
That was really confusing me, but ya I got a ton of the OP updated, thx for all who have posted.

Some other things you may want to add to somewhere:
-2 Handers have a 2x backstab bonus (maybe obvious idk, but still relevant). -Power Bash related talents apply to 2 handed weapons, but seemingly not to bows (which can bash by default for a stagger). -Hitting an item hotkey a 2nd time while holding a 2handed item will go back to what you had equipped before (PC Only).
I 2nd the suggestion of which perks to skip. Personally I recommend keeping in mind that via gear/enchants you can get 1 school of magic casting for free (well potentially 2 really). Destruction, Illusion, and Conjuration don't have any perks off the adept+ perks so if you're going pure mage you grab the novice talent only then use enchants and what not to reduce the magic cost of the spell enough to be spammable/free. You can do it for 2 schools if you grab the 2 enchant/item talent or 1 school if you don't (or want more magic resist).

A little something about destruction magic I found out from searching the net, browsing wikis to testing with console ingame myself:
Destruction scales minimally. Only things that increase your direct dps are the perks in the destruction tree for 25/50% extra damage and the Illusion school perks Hypnotic Gaze, Aspect of Terror and Rage, each for a single element. This I assume is a bug, but they more than double the damage. Magicka amount, magicka regen, character level or skill in destruction do not increase damage. Skill in destruction decreases mana cost.
tested with a lvl 1 character having full destro tree, 100 skill. Flames spell damage 12/4mana/s. Add in Aspect of Terror, 27/4mana/s. changed character level to 50, no change in stats, increased magicka to 50000, no change. Found out the Illusion school perks having effect by first adding full spellschool perk tree, then after finding out Illusion made a difference, 1 by 1 from there on.
The only other way to increase direct dps of destruction spells is through alchemy, with fortify destruction potion and the various vulnerability poisons to a damage school.
Enchanting (with alchemy and smithing used to boost it) will allow you to enchant gear that will make destruction spells manafree to cast though.
Would still like to find out what destruction dual casting exactly does, as it doesn't seem to increase damage notably, although it does cost more mana than it does to simply two-cast the same spell. If I figure out how to spawn NPCs and be able to change their health total to exact values, should do the trick. It's useful for the stagger effect with impact naturally.

To be honest, at the moment i would actually advise people not to take smithing or enchanting. Even without exploiting recursion loops of enchanting/alchemy, even without using an enchanted smithing gear, even without reducing spellcosts to zero, if you run around in full daedric armor with enchants everything becomes absurdly simple even on masters difficulty. And it is not really hard getting materials for that, considering that every blacksmith sells ebony bars, and alchemists often sell daedra hearts, or you find them by simply playing the game since apparently, many evil alchemists have those lying around in their cupboards. Plus them being far better than anything you could ever find takes the fun out of looting places, since you effectively only find gold.

Since followers lock their level when you acquire them, you can use the console to level them up:
open console: click follower (you'll get the code in the middle of the screen) disable enable
follower will now respawn (NOTE: I only tried this with Lydia, whom respawned in my home, can't assure compatibility with other followers so DONT FORGET TO SAVE).
You can check if it worked by doing the command Getav health (or any other stat). This command can also be used to check their health if you want to heal them. I guess it would also work on enemy mages if you want to see when they're out of mana .

Sayan Mage
Main focus : Destruction, Alteration & Enchanting. Race : High Elf (high dps), Dark Elf(Better M. Defense.). Statistics : 3/0/0 (magicka/health/stamina) Secondary focus : Restoration. Essential Perks : - Destruction Dual Casting. - Impact. - Alteration Everything, literaly all of them are important. - Augmented Flames/Frost/Shock (Flame and Shock first). -Enchanting Entire Middle Column Skill tree.
Weapons : None, or you won't be able to do Infinite Magic Stream Micro.
Armor : Until your alteration has the mage armor and your enchanting is good, wear light armor. Then wear enchanted clothes, rings, crowns and amulets with mana regeneration increase.
Follower : None. You will kill them often.
Stone : The Mage until you can get The Lover.
Gameplay General Tips : At the start your going to be pretty weak, and will die easily. Your focus should always be on mana, and lowest tier destruction spells. With light armor you should be able to keep your distance from any early melee, plus light armor defense support should keep you alive. As soon as you can (level 5), go to the Winterhold's College. You need to get the mana regeneration robes A.S.A.P. You should finish it first to get the Arch-Mage's Robe and Morokei Mask (Hardest fight in the entire game) . Also up your enchanting skills, specially the first one to the max. With grand or even great soul stones you will make the most op mana regeneration items. Until you can get telekinesis, alteration will be tough to level, but it's your last defense. I mean last because you will kill almost everything before they can get to you.
General Destruction Mage Tips. -Chain lightning can hit anybody behind a cover. Just aim at the floor near him. Sometimes in dungeons with uneven floor it won't work. -Most Dragons at the start are pretty weak against frost. -Learn the Infinite Magic Stream Micro. Charge 2 different or same spells(fireballs/chain l.) without dual casting. Then release one of them, and quickly re-charge the spell on that hand, while releasing the other. Repeat until ur mana is gone, ur dead, or w/e is after u is dead. You know your doing it right when it's a fast constant stream, your mana is gone, and everything is dead.

i will be starting my first game this week and want to roll an offensive valkyrie like class. ive been watching my buddies play though and have not noticed any polearms or halberd like weapons in this game, is this true? perhaps the developers didnt know how to make them work? kind of crazy they wouldn't put them in...
if i cant do that i'll have to settle for a greatsword/bow, and would like to focus on support magic and enchants. don't know much about the game, but does this sound legit?
also, can you dye armor in this game?

No spear like weapons. It makes sense because Polearms are most effective in phalanx-type formations...not for 1v1 combat.
No you cannot dye armor.

Restoration and Alteration dual cast both add 10% to the combined spell (very easy to test with wards and armor buffs) so I assume Destruction is the same. The increased mana cost makes the Destruction version worthless if it weren't for the Impact perk though.

Sharpshooter/Sniper
Main focus : Archery & Stealth Race : Wood Elf / Khajit / Argonian Statistics : 0/3/1 (magicka/health/stamina) Secondary focus : Light Armor & Lockpicking Essential Perks : - Eagle Eye - Steady Hand - Overdraw - Deadly Aim - Light Foot Weapons : Your main should be something like an Elven/Glass Bow with dual elemental enchantments - Fire & Ice seems perfect. If you get good at enchanting, you can squeeze out around 320 damage from a shot, without any of the bonuses from the stealth perks. Keep your back up as either dual daggers (Orichish) or a combo of sword and shield (Elven/Glass). Good enchants for the dual daggers is "life steal" (health absorb) on both and one elemental for each - left hand Ice, right hand Fire. Shield is good with health boost and one-handed skill buff or health boost plus magic resistance. The sword should be enchanted with life steal and fire. Armor : Light ! That's the key. Either Elven or Glass would be great for you. If you manage to scrap up enough blacksmithing (highly doubtful), you can try sneak in a set of Light Dragonscale Armor. Good enchants are Archery for the helm, Health + Stamina regen for the torso, Archery + Lockpicking for the gauntlets and Sneak + Muffle for the boots. Follower : Vorstag is perfect. Faendal is actually pretty good as well. Stone : The Thief. Simple as that. You pick it up early and stick with it thru out. Gameplay General Tips : When exploring, keep sneaking. You'll often catch your pray before they can see you and the bow + sneak will result in one-shot-one-kill quite often. The only problem I have is when I'm with the dual daggers. I pretty much need to access my inventory every time my one-shot-one-kill move fails, because I have to equip my daggers properly. Nothing major to worry thou. You'll have enough health pool to take damage by dragons and giants once you reach level 20 and above. Besides, your light armor should offer decent protection by default. I've often found myself in situations facing multiple enemies at once, usually killing 2 or 3 just with the bow and arrows from distance and from there on, I massacre the rest pretty easly with the dual dagger power strikes (hold down mouse left and right buttons at the same time). Did you use this on master? Sounds interesting to play

I'm wondering if a destruction dark elf would be any good on Masters level. I'm on expert right now and I'm sort of struggling to kill people fast enough right now. I've gotten my equipement to the point where most of my spells don't cost any magicka. Is there anyway I can increase my damage output without spamming like crazy, and is there anyway I can cast the master level spells faster than the like 5 seconds it takes now? Thanks!
