Does anyone else play this, and want to play on BSW? Apparently it's the hottest thing in the scene now, the new Settlers of Catan/Carcassone, since being released at Spiel 2008 in October.

This game is sweet. Iterative deck-building games are surprisingly interesting.

Grand, I am genuinely interested, I have never played the game before though. And what is BSW?

If possible, I'd suggest learning to play this in real life before going onto BSW. See if there's a board game club around you - google it, or look at BoardGameGeek's site: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/forum/22/forum/1 If not, it's still thoroughly enjoyable and possible to learn on BSW, but it's not the easiest way to learn the game. If you want to play with me on BSW, PM me your contact info and I'll try to teach you the game.

I agree. It feels a lot like the deck-building part of Magic - which, I am told, is most of the fun of higher-level Magic play - and you also get to play it out immediately.

Games only take 20-30 minutes; support 2-4 players; it's easy to learn and have fun with immediately, even if you are playing vs much better people; there's little downtime; there's really high replayability; there's a great deal of strategic depth.

So I got my girlfriend started on a bit of Magic: The Gathering and she thought it was interesting. However, she saw some friends of hers playing Dominion and asked me if I'd like to try that instead. Any advice on which one would better suit us? We're pretty much only going to be playing 1v1 and don't really intend to be shelling out much cash whichever route we go. The tossup is pretty much between buying the first Dominion game or one of the Magic Duel Decks (probably Divine vs Demonic). I'm obviously leaning a bit more in favor of Magic simply because I play that already.

Also, I haven't read to deep into the Dominion community but it isn't a "solved" game is it? I heard some rumors that it was.

If you have a decent printer and some card sleeves you could always proxy Magic cards .

Hell, even if you don't have any cards already you can just go to like Zendikar's prerelease and take some lands from the land box they should have (I know I took a good 100-200 lands from ARB's prerelease )

I have that game. Fun times. Race for the Galaxy is also nice.

OH MY GOD GET DOMINION

absolutely INSANELY fun game to play over and over and over again. plus, you only have to make ONE investment (or three, depending if you want to purchase the two expansions like i do). Totally worth it.

everyone in my house plays it and everyone i introduce it to immediately picks it up and wants to play more gogogogoogo

I am about to get this game, I was on the fence but the above post is about the strongest endorsement there is. =D

If Sean thinks it's ballin', it's probably ballin'.

I just have two questions.

Will it be simple enough for me to get my friends who aren't that into strategic games to play it? They shy away from things like Go, Chess or Risk.

Is it fun to play 1v1 or is a larger game much better?
It's not like I just one day DECIDED to play Terran. I was born that way, and there isn't one thing I or anybody else can do about it.

1v1 eventually boils down to who gets the abusive strat going first.

I'd say 3 players is the most balanced way to play the game. 4 Players is also quite ok. 1v1 is also fun to play, but sometimes you will get mass crippled (comparable to being 6 pooled) and then I don't feel like playing out the whole game.

Also, you can play online here:
http://dominion.isotropic.org/
All the sets are there and it's quite nice to play with a friend, to get the hang of the game and to see which expansions you like. They even have ranked play. I like it better than BSW.

Thanks for the great info Fryght!

I'm sure I'll be able to get 3 or 4 players pretty often. I may try the online version a bit but I am pretty set on buying this game either way, to me board and card games are just less fun on a computer. Also, if I play 1v1 it will be with my girlfriend and a casual game so hopefully she wont cheese me=P

I hope people don't mind the bump...

Is this game worth buying or should I print? I already bought Bang! which wasn't really worth it probably but I like having the actual set and supporting game creators.
Is this something that I'll play a lot or just a one/two time thing that gets lost in the shelves.

Games I like: Bang!, Catan, Risk, etc. Monopoly sucks

edit: Also I'm not sure if there's a boardgame thread but what's the verdict on Ticket to Ride. good game?

Get original Dominion and then Intrigue if you like the first one. Wouldn't buy more than that, imo. Those two are the best. Also, you can try all expansions online with friends, at the link I posted earlier. That should be a nice demo for trying out the game.

You can also look into Ascension and Thunderstone. Both are deck building games, much like Dominion and both are pretty cool. Ticket to Ride is deck building as well, but I don't know anything about that one.

http://dominionstrategy.com/ is pretty good, I'm teaching myself some good combos now that I've played about 4 RL games. There is also a free android phone app that lets you play, albeit with atrocious graphics.

That Site isn't great without having played a few times on your own first, the mental leap that rushing for treasure is better than buying multiple kingdom cards is akin to the SC2 leap of realizing large-scale macro > defensive structures.

I think I read about chain minions on that site. I used it against my brother and his friend and it was nicely effective. =D
