Hey guys!

I really prefer to use the progamers real names when they're well known instead of they're nicknames... maybe I'm the only one who feels this way? For instance, I would love to say Kim Taek Yong instead of Bisu and Kang Min instead of Nal_rA...

But, I guess, this really isnt going to happen since Tasteless is still called Tasteless and I have NO idea what his real name is, and he's an AMERICAN!

Don't get me wrong, nicknames are great when used on the internet so that you can remain anonymous, but when you're a progamer who's being seen on tv on a regular basis, maybe nicknames aren't a priority?

I mean, I'm not an idiot, I don't go around calling Kaká "Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite".... But still! Maybe you guys don't agree but still get my point?

Anyway... had to get this off my chest __ __ ;;

Real names are boring, meaningless, and hard to remember. Nicknames are fun, colorful, and easy to remember.

Guess which I prefer.

progamers are mostly known by their real names in the korean community/pro scene anyway
calling players by their nicknames is mostly a non korean thing, probably because nonkorean bw is almost entirely online.

Progamers use nickname to identify themselves, so thats why I refer to them by that. I think if Bisu really wanted everyone to call him Kim Taek Yong, Hed used that instead of "Bisu"

I\'m horrible with names, no thanks, I\'d get all those asian names mixed up so damn fast. Nicknames are so much cooler. Also, if anyone wants to be called by his name there's nothing stopping him from using his real name as nickname.

It's just cooler if people call you "savior" instead of some ordinary name.

hmm i have no idea about that though >_> i guess its just the internet and online culture of getting an alias and all that but for progamers who are more famous it's still normal that they're known by they're korean name instead?

in korean matches, savior actually uses "majaeyoon" in korean. I really do not think that progamers use nicknames to identify themselves, as some can't even pronounce the screen name they are using.
furthermore, due to the fact that an internet lifestyle isn't looked down upon in korea allows koreans to integrate both their internet life and "real" life in a better manner than in the states.

Nicknames are cool to remember a player by unless it's Bifrost/Justin or whatever the fuck his new name is now, that keeps changing their name... . Pick 1 nickname and stick with it.

they can use whatever name they want it doesnt really matter
they just have bisu and all of that cause they were forced to adopt english names on b.net
they put 마재윤 or homosexual or savior or anything
i think the only thing they really have to put in their names every game in proleague is their team sponsor?

When we talked to Nal_rA at blizzcon he as saying something about nicknames dont matter in korea and everyone knows the players by their real names etc.

Its probably much easier to remember the names though because they speak the language etc.

Just like us americans can probably name all our favorite REAL sports players on football, baseball, basketball, etc.

This thread is pretty stupid.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

The nicknames are 90% of the time english words or phrases or derivations of english words. Thus us english speakers can pronounce, spell, and easily remember them.

There are so many Park's I don't know how in the fuck to keep track of koreans. I'm not being a dick, it's the truth. And many of the sylables, like hyun, or parts of names like yo and lim. And how about that whole backwards/forwards name thing. Is he Kang Min or Min Kang?

It's all very confusing, so it's easier to just call the fucker Ra and be done with it.

That's my reasoning.

Considering you can't use Korean names on bnet, they're forced to use a screenname.

Maybe we should just all lean a little Korean and from now on refer to all of them by their real names anyway =P. I think I'm going to start doing that to confuse noobs.

Well, can you actually put Korean characters as Broodwar profile names?
I don't think I've ever seen that. So they'd have to use _some_ nickname whether they want to or not. Unless they use their romanized name but I guess many of them don't even know it.
Also everybody starts playing seriously over the internet (outside of korea you can drop the 'seriously') and I'm sure most people don't want to tell their real names to everyone on the net.

Once they turned pro and their names are known and they don't have to keep an online identity to find games etc. the nicknames become unimportant of course. That's why they often switch or use funny names etc. (Although I think they abandoned the latter.)
But foreign players still need to keep their online identity because otherwise they will never get recognition or find games.

As for me, I don't know many real names and it would be a hassle to learn them. The nicknames are much easier to remember and you can also see them in Vods (unlike Korean characters which I'm very slow at reading).

Edit: I just thought of another problem. Foreigners usually can't type Korean so while Koreans might use Hangul (assuming that everybody abandoned nicknames) the rest of the world would use romanized names and those aren't definite at all. Every translator has a different way of spelling them.

You dont need to learn korean, only remember their name

I dont know korean and I can tell who's playing when i look at the score, I remember the symbols for about 20 or so players, and they play very often.

It's pretty easy, but it really helped me out, about 2 months after learning real names, a korean family moved nearby and one of their kids were in my class.

He got a friend right away, we had common ground to talk about until we could say regular friend stuff.

/rant I guess.
