The announcers on OGN and MBC refer to the players by their actual names rather than their adopted alias. I know the names of the players I like or care about, or ones that are just very good and have many televised matches.

And what is this doing in General?

and most of the koreans i talk to are like who the hells [xxx nickname] ? then i have to say their real name

hmm so then why do you think they even bother with getting a nickname?

Becuase you need one to register for bnet. I think the majority of pros played bnet before playing on the big stage

People naturally gravitate towards nicknames.

50 Cent, Eminem, Prince, and so on.

It's not just a gamer thing.

Somewhat related, one of the trippiest things I've ever experienced was when I saw a Korean exchange student and asked if she knew who "Lim Yo Hwan" was, to which she said yes and was completely stoked that an American knew about him. She mustered together enough of her limited English knowledge to ask me how popular he was in America, to which I replied that serious gamers knew about him, although I'm not sure if she understood me. Unfortunately I suck in social situations so I wasn't able to take advantage of my easy in with a hot Korean girl. I suck.

This happened a few years ago, I wonder what I'd do now.

I was working at my local pizzahut once and asked an asian guy who was CLEARLY a tourist where he was from, he said south-kor so me, being a natural bw nerd, asked him if he knew Lim Yo Hwan
he got all excited and kekekeke and yelled something at his wife rofl.
His english sucked though, otherwise I would've totally given him my analysis of the OSL that was going on.

Because using your real name when logging on to bnet is no fun

I like their real names too, just few people would understand (who don't follow pro scene) Ma Jae Yoon, Lim Yo Hwan, Kang Min, Kim Taek Yong. They'd prefer Savior, Boxer, Nal_ra, Bisu...

Well by now I don't care, but when I first joined TLnet and was reading progaming news from here and FiFo I was confused as hell. I'd be reading the same reports from OSL or MSL yet I wouldn't know it cuz FiFo would use their names and TLnet would use their nicks.

Now I don't really care, but for us bilingual gooks it's a bitch to remember a progamer's real name and ID name....

but you want to know what's even more of a bitch?

The fans from FiFo forums take a step further and refer to the players by their fan-given nicknames. Anyone know who the hell "Ahn-shim" (안심) is? or "Kong" (콩)?

In Korea, they always refer to the players by their names. I've seen the commentators mention the players' nicknames mostly when they had nothing to talk about at the beginning of the game. Being a part of both worlds, I tend to know progamers' real names and their nicknames.

Nicknames are best online, but when you meet someone in person, it's really awkward.
I met my best-bnet friend IRL like 4 years ago (amazingly, we lived only 10 minutes away from eachother) and we were talking shit about other bnet people in his car, and it was awkward referring to people like, "So what's up with FatTemplar31, isn't he bla bla bla..." Just tooooo geeky.

Also, after Brandon and I met, it was like, we rarely used online handles even while gaming, unless speaking by reference to a 3rd person.

How does it goes down when TL people meet eachother? Everybody knows the names of the high-profile members, but you guys don't go around saying "Decafchicken is ordering pizza, semioldguy, can you pickup some beer?", do you? Just weird..
People who fail to distinguish Socratic Method from malicious trolling are sadly stupid and not worth a response.

I think at the least we should call iloveoov Choi Yun Sung when saying it out loud, to settle the whole "i love" "i love oh oh vee" "i love oooov" debate.

And on that note, if you wanted to use a shorter version, is there a polite way to do it? Would you call him Yun? Yun Sung? Or would it be something else? Or is it rude to not use his whole name if you don't know him? I don't know anything about Korean names.

I just prefer calling them by their normal names when I'm talking but when I'm online for the sake of faster typing I just use their IDs.

I use their nicks when talking on the internet, but their real names sound waaaay cooler.
SonuvBob: Yes, the majority of TL is college-aged, and thus clearly stupid.
