CAL: Starcraft is having an open league for Starcraft 1v1, 2v2s. Unfortunately it started already. Do we need it? Of course it would be nice if our teams and clans had a little more sponsorship possibilities here in the west. So yeah, it would be really nice if StarCraft finally did works its way into CPL. I hope this does not turn into a debate on how CPL has always shunned us (and yeah, I am not a CPL fan by far), it don't really matter anymore. What we need is our game represented everywhere not just Korea. We need a way for the many awesome StarCraft teams, here in the west, to get a chance to see maybe one day real possibilities in money and event promotion.
Read on this post I left at PGTOUR.
We need again the StarCraft community to rally up, before everyone forgets us. Thanks. Read on: http://www.pgtour.net/news.view.php?id=2218&db=bw
----------- CAL: Starcraft
They actually added Starcraft this year to CyberAhtlete Amateur League. Mind you they did not spread the word too much in our community. I just got a tip today, May 16th, from one of their administrators. They are having both a 1v1 and a 2v2 League.
The league is an online event so they are insisting on the use of the PenguinPlug which proves someone is keeping order. In case you guys have already forgot, PenguinPlug is a required client side client that must be used during a CAL match.
They started their season yesterday, May 15th, which means if you have not joined yet, you will not be able to join. You can send your opinions to kang@caleague.com. Make sure you send him an e-mail asking to re-open the season. Our community has been trying to join CPL/CAL for years, and now that they actually open a season for StarCraft it is already closed with only 400 registrations. I really wished we have known about it sooner. I hope they don't judge the success of the first season when it comes time to setting up the next one, because if they do, there might not be a next season.
They also have created a channel at battle.net to hang out, let me quote their information:
You can find the CAL Starcraft Broodwar channel on Battle.Net by going to channel: Op CALeague. You can access to channel by either typing in "/join op CALeague" while being in the main lobby, or by clicking on the "Channel" button from the main lobby and typing in "Op CALeague". The channel doesn't really serve any purpose, except to give users a place to relax and idle on Battle.Net.
As you can see very ultra-noob friendly instructions, so I assume it is in the East server. They of course have an IRC channel for the 1337. Additonally, users may use the channel #sc-scrim (also on Gamesurge IRC network) to assist in finding scrims.* We really wish them the best of luck so that hopefully the next season StarCraft has a better representation, at least in numbers.
In general CounterStrike crackheads never have given Starcraft much attention. Many know our game, some even like it, but their not into StarCraft. It is not because they hate RTS or Starcraft - it simply is not their thing, so they will never organize a StarCraft event properly unless they put a StarCraft fan in charge (like the case of PuertoRican at GGL, or Ozmita at Clanbase). Hopefully they will eventually put someone in charge of the StarCraft League who loves StarCraft above any other game.
In the meanwhile please mail Kang at kang@caleague.com and ask him to re-open the league, at the very least so they know our real numbers. If you don' want to use e-mail, register and leave a comment here: http://www.caleague.com/?division=sc11 (in their latest news "Regular Season" in the comments section)
Be polite and patient, remember they are counterstrike players. Even their snipers are impatient, all prone to head shots first, questions later. Most have very short attention spans but deep down they are gamers just like us. And many gamers out there, play both games.

First I would like to thank Physician for the write up on both TeamLiquid.net and PGTour.net about CAL finally getting StarCraft as a part of their division line up. I am CAL|JamesH one of the new StarCraft Division Admins. I joined up with CAL as soon as I seen the SC division was going to be a reality. Second I agree with Physician that we have a good many problems, but believe me when I say we are working to improve this new division and WE ARE TRYING to make this division in CAL as best as it can be. Now I know we are going to get flamed because of some poor, unguided decisions that were made in planning, but that was before I came along. I am only one person though, but I know there is a community of StarCraft fans ready to help.
Please email Kang at Kang@caleague.com and tell him your thoughts and give us the support we need to make it through this season (4 months) so we can make the necessary changes for CAL:SC to be a successful Starcraft league. Thanks- CAL|JamesH

The reply from Kang taken from the news on PGTour.net
I'm very sorry of the earlier closure and low exposure of the league to the main BW community. There are multiple reasons why, but those would all be excuses =x.
Anyways, the main point is that registrations have been temporairly re-opened until Sunday, May 21st, 2006. After that point they will be closed until the end of the season.
I hope to see that many people join, and that we will have a wonderful season http://www.pgtour.net/news.view.php?id=2218&db=bw

Sunday, May 21st, 2006 it is. Post it around

I appreciate you spreading the word, but why do you have to add crap like this? If you had any experience with CAL (and you seemingly don't), you'd realize that admins do very little running and much more moderating. Much of the competition is automated by the CAL website. And it isn't the kind of double elimination one on one tourneys usually run among SC players, but clan based. In this case, it would be better to have admins experienced with CAL rules and team based ladders. This was true in the case with CAL-Natural Selection, where the admins were either CAL veterans or admins previously assigned to other games.
If you're going to ask us to be polite with them, why don't you begin by posting politely about them among us? Lead by example?

There is a fine point between being rude and being humorous. My intention was humour and conciliation, I am sorry you chose to see it as being impolite.

That has to be the worst list of shitty, old, unbalanced, misspelled, and/or unaestethetically pleasing maps I have EVER seen.
There are maybe 5-6 on there that I would use for a real league.Rush hour 3, as it is fairly balanced (but can't be used for 2v2), Luna and LT because they are the old Stand-bys that everyone knows. Finally Nost and Bifrost, which, while old staples, seem to be either loved or hated by the community. I guess you could include Gaema too, but I've heard its fairly hard for Z in ZvT.
Oh, just saw Forte on there, which I suppose is fine as well.
The rest are really just terrible and outdated. I was almost surprised they didn't have neo-no way out on there.

The maps is the least of our worries man. The important thing is its a chance to participate and make something out of our game at CAL. Anyone thinks PuertoRican had it easy at GGL? Nah he had to push and our collective support helped him when he needed it. (It is full of old school ~ prehistoric ~ hard core quake dinos!) If I had a mainly Starcraft league and I was told to organize a league for CS within it I wouldn't lift a finger, just not my thing - but I would put a CS guy to do it. You have to understand that there are very few Starcraft players at CAL administration. Apart from the lack of promotion they've done a good job for being FPS players. Now we have to get a PuertoRican in there.

I'm glad to see that Kang has reopened the SC division till Sunday... NOW GO GO GO register so I wil have a division to admin for next season. If you have any questions please visit our irc channels #sc-scrim and #caleague-starcraft on the gamesurge network. Also you can send your questions to my email at jamesh@caleague.com. Your suggestions and feedback are always welcome.

Ya I know, that is why I was worried if they did not pull in a decent number of gamers - history would repeat itself. I never played in a league but I will give it a try on this one just to add one more.

Shodown rocks, Bloodbath should be added too and Legacy and Diablo and other old maps that are replaced by standard 8 min or whatever it is with gas insanely close - vary it up a bit eh.
|
Wow some seriously old maps that were taken away for good reasons.
Needless to say I'm hoping this helps the community gain a little more coverage.
