Iwas just curious how different players of different races setup their control groups 1-0 and F1-F1whatever. Post your race first, then your standard setup, feel free to discuss why if you like. For me:
Protoss
1 - Zealots, Sentries, Immortals, Stalkers, Archons 2 - Colossus 3 - High Templars or Phoenix/Void Ray if currently harassing (Stalkers if I'm currently Blink harassing, then I switch back) 4 - Nexuses 5 - Gateways/WarpGates 6 - Robotics Facilities 7 - Starports 8 - Forges 9 - Warp Prism/Observer 0 - Warp Prism/ Observer (0 goes to whichever one is mobile at the time and needs the most care)
F1 - Main Base F2 - Natural F3 - 3rd Base F4 - 4th Base F5 - Enemy Natural or closest expansion to me F6 - Enemy Main F7 - Dead Center of the map, or important Xel'Naga Watchtower
That's my standard setup, with group 3 changing the most (HTs for battles, or when harassing, DTs, Phoenixes, Void Rays, other air units, secondary army if flanking, etc). I consider 3 to be my versatile flex group, changing a lot based on what the situation calls for. Mid and lategame I ALWAYS keep an extra observer in group 1 with my "main army" for detection reasons.
So what about you guys? I'm curious to see everyone's different setups of different races and the reasons behind them.

1 - main army (zealots, sentries) 2 - stalkers 3 - hts or obs 4 - robo/stargate 5- nexi 6 - obs 7 - whatever 8 - whatever 9 - rebound to W, general warpgate key unbound, this way my gates and warpgates can be on same hotkey at all times 0 - forges, tech, whatever
I don't use camera hotkeys, I just click on minimap, probably something I should work on.
|
1- zealot/sentry/immortal 2- stalkers 3-collosi/ht or phoenix 4-nexus 5-robo 6- stargate 7- warp prism 8- obs 9- obs 0- nexus
|
1- nexi 2- scouting probe then robos 3- all army 4- gateways then stargates 5,6,7,8,9,9- obs + whatever.
Control groups are way overated imo.

Protoss
1 main army 2 stalker (if blink) or phoenix 3 ht/ collossi 4 stargate/robo 5 nexus 6 forge 7 obs
|
I play terran
1-Factory/Starport 2-Rax 3-CC 4,5,6- army 7,8,9,0- ebay,armory bla bla bla
|
As Protoss
1- Nexus 2- Robos/Stargates 3 - Pheonix/Army 4-0 - other army
As Terran
1 - CC 2 - Rax/facts/Starports 3-6 - army 7-0 - any medvacs for dropping
As Zerg
1 - hatcheries 2 - Creep spreading queens 3-6 - army 7-0 - a hatch and a queen on each hotkey.
Army on 3-6 is so i can go 3a4a5a6a while pressing the "a" key with my pinky - much more comfortable than the usual 1a2a3a.
As zerg - queen injects are on "G" so I can press it with my pinky and go 77gClick88gClick99gClick00gClick - and inject everywhere really quickly.
As terran - unload is on "G" - so I can use the same hand position as with zerg injects but to unload units in several places at once.
I also use F keys for base positions and for proxy pylon as protoss.
|
Mid - Late Game 1 - queens 2 - main army 3 - units that need my attention (mutas, infestors, etc.) 4 - hatcheries 5 - misc (usually overseers, or drops)
Early Game 1 - 1st OL 2 - scouting lings 3 - scouting drone / proxy hatch 4 - hatcheries
Anything past 5 feels uncomfortable to me, so I try to keep everything on the left side of the keyboard.
I have my queens on 1 because I have ~ set to "base camera". So when I inject I go ~, 1, V, hold shift, ~ click, ~ click, etc.
|
1- Rax 2- CC 3- Facts 4- Starports 5-0 units
|
1-CC 2-rax 3-SP 4- tanks (vikings in tvp) 5 -bio 6 -ghosts
f4- factory
I find it easier not to use anything above 6 as its hard to reach quickly.
|
Protoss (main race): 1: entire ground army (minus HT) 2: stalkers 3: obs #2, later HT 4: obs #1 5: nexus 6: robo + stargate 7: forge + twilight 0 (tab): harass unit (warp prism, phoenix, etc)
In PvT trying to get in the habit of making the 1 hotkey more precise i.e. no stalkers or colossus in it, only zealot sentry immortal. Makes stalker + colossus vs viking dances less dangerous.
Terran (frequently played offrace): Bio 1: MMM 2: vikings 3: ghosts 4: drop #1 5: orbitals 6: rax/factory/starport 7: ebay + armory 0 (tab): drop #2
Biomech 1: MMM 2: tanks 3: vikings 4: ghosts rest the same
I wish I had the awareness/apm to control medivacs separately from marines/marauders but alas I don't
F keys go to bases... base 1 = F1, base 2 = F2, etc
|
As zerg: 1: Lings 2: Roach/hydras 3: Special units/harrass (this includes banes, muta's, infestors) 4: Overflow if 2 special units 5: SPARE 6: All hatches 7: All queens 0: Evo chambers
Also mapped "next base" to my mouse side wheel to quickly flick between each hatch. If I don't have any roach/hydra or any lings because of my build, all the army hotkeys move down one.
|
Terran 1-bio 2-mech 3-command centres early game, and spellcasters(ghosts) late game 4-rax 5-fact 6-starport 0-cc's
Protoss 1-gateway units 2-robo/air units 3-nexus early game, spellcasters late game 4-gateways 5-robo 6-stargate 0-nexus
Zerg 1-ling/roach 2-spellcasters/bling 3-muta 4-all hatcheries 5-main hatch 6-first expo 7-second expo
For all races, F2-Main, F3-Expo, F4-2nd Expo

i play zurg
`, 1, 2, 3 : army 4: all hatches 5: main 6: natural 7: third 8: fourth
etc
also remapped backspace to spacebar, generally i just cycle through this periodically to make sure my hatches have the little green eggs on them
i generally just use 1, 2 and 3 for my army for the majority of the game, but having the extra hotkey available makes tooling around with big lategame armies a little bit easier
i also don't hotkey my queens because im a boss
|
I used to main Z in beta, and I never really saw a reason to hotkey my queens, since I cycled through my hatches constantly and the queens are usually sitting right next to them. I think as far as hotkeys go, or control groups rather, it seems a lot of people tend to have their main army on 1 and casters on 3. I think having CCs/Nexuses on 4 and Raxes/Gateways on 5 is very efficient, as well.
|
I remapped almost everything 6 7 8 9 0 are E R F T X my "lazy hands" setup :
1 - All CC 2 - All raxs 3 - All factores 4 - All starports 5 - Ebays/armory E - main army (bio + medivacs) R - siege tanks (TvZ) or ghosts (TvP), the R group is on following mode with E F - Drop ship1 T - vikings X - Drop ship2
F1-F4 : bases 1-4 (shift + Fkey for set camera location) ` : camera saving on my rally point (most of the time at natural) (set camera save is alt+`)
Trying to force myself to use everything for improve my mechanics
|
Man I have such a bad hotkey setup haha
Protoss
middle mouse button - whole army tab - mainly for phoenix and observers/warp prisms 1 - nexus 2 - robo 3 - stargate ~ - used when I have to split my army sometimes
I suppose I should use capslock as another hotkey but its really annoying having to make sure it's off whenever I want to speak. Is it possible to turn that off?
|
Terran
` is rebound as my 0 key = ebays and armories 1 = army 2 = harass units (Banshees or hellions) 3 = other harass units or drop ships 4 = drop ships 5 = All CCs 6 = Barracks and Factories 7 = Starports 8 = Unused sadly 9 = Unused sadly
Protoss ` = 0 = Obs in their base 1 = army 2 = unused 3 = early game warp gates, then this gets redone differently each game 4 = warp prism 5 = nexuses (or is it nexii?) 6 = robo if no stargate, stargate if no robo 7 = stargate default 8,9 = unused
Zerg
My zerg is different
`= 0 = evo chambers 1 = all hatch 2 = all inject queens 3 = scout overlord 4 = main army 5 = mutas or infestors 6 = creep spread queen 7 = nydus network 8,9 = surprise, still unused.
|
Protoss here 1- main army 2- hts 3- nexus 4- gateways 5- robo/stargate depending on what i am doing 6- obs 7- froge 8- any forward/proxy pylon
|
Zerg :D
1 - Hatcheries 2 - Queens (For injects) 3 - Queens (For creep spread) 4 - Nydus (If I have one) 5 - Evo Chambers 6 - Sub-Army (mutas, infestors, other micro-able units) 7 - Main Army 8 - Sub-Army (mutas, infestors, other micro-able units) 9 - Any scouting unit (early game drone, overlords) 0 - Any building tech building (helps me remember to check on the progress of the building)
