A few minutes ago, I was sitting in a 1v1 obs lobby. It was kinda slow so I asked what the other players thought about the new HOTS units. One of the players stated that Starcraft 2 doesn't feel like Broodwar and that he prefers Broodwar. I never played Broodwar online due to sub par computer/internet during my teenage years, so I don't understand where he was coming from. So I asked the question "why don't you just play Broodwar if you prefer it?"
I genuinely wanted a response from him but I received standard internet hate speak and was accused of trolling. I tried to ask the other players during the game why my question was taken so poorly. I received the same treatment.
I restate my question to the TL community. Why do people who prefer Broodwar play SC2 and complain that it isn't like Broodwar? They are 2 different games. Dark Souls is different from Demon's Souls in a similar way. It seems more logical to load up Broodwar and play the game you enjoy more. This is a serious question and I am not trolling.

I would say that most of the people that say that on battle.net just want to seem cool, and they probably havent even played BW in the las 8 years.
Of course there is people like that and they diserve all the respect in the world, but the people in battle net are probably "faking" it

Nostalgia is a filfthy filfthy lover.
She makes you remember her as beautiful and awesome when in truth it wasn't half as great as you remember her.
Point being:
BW Is more an idea than the actual game, it was the beginning of something and "the good old days", anyone who is above 25+ age and has been with some early internet community should know this feeling since it happens alot.

Community. PERIOD
Brood war was a more developed game with a much higher skill cap, it was a very challenging RTS. However due to the 'oldness' and outdated graphics many now play SC2, and most people like me play games that are popular. Right now it is SC2, 10 years ago it was brood war. All of the old BW dudes complain how gay this game is compared to theirs, due to nostalgia. It is the game they grew up with, and they are shocked and saddened to see it go. This is how it works........
10 years later, SC3 comes out, we complain to the noobies how noob-friendly their game is and how better ours was. It is life, dw bout it man  just pick your fav game and have fun with it, life is too short to argue with trolls

I've also noticed this, fact is I play both and enjoy both for the 2 different games they are. Weird that everyone who enjoys bw does the same, even tho its not as easy to get practice partners as before.

I don't think anyone actually likes playing Brood War more. It was a more complete, deeper, more balanced game, but the improvements of SC2 in AI, pathfinding, grouping, smart spellcasting and base management are too huge to ditch.

This is just blunt 16 year-old-kid logic you're using, he plays TWO DIFFERENT GAMES because they're TWO DIFFERENT GAMES, he prefers ONE OF THE GAMES because THEY'RE TWO DIFFERENT GAMES.

SC2 has Colossus and Marauders  .

With all due respect, this hasn't actually answered my question (or in trying to be as nice of a noob as I can, I was too proper and didn't actually say anything.) Why don't people who like BW more just play BW? I understand that the internet is a magical place where everyone has 15 inch dicks and drives a Maserati, but it doesn't seem helpful from a psychological or purely logical perspective

He is complaining about them being two separate games. He said that is doesn't feel like broodwar. If you play a game, you accept that it is what it is, not that its another game that you want it to be.

I rly think Broodwar felt better then Starcraft 2 simply cuz of the gameplay comfort thingis not implented^^ Don´t get me wrong, Iam kinda old now and start to like comfort functions now but back in the days, it felt so awesome to control your 200 army better then your opponent. It was this game which made want to know my keyboard in and out (was console gamer at this time until I played sc)
But on the other hand maybe it will switch with sc2 and every expansion released.
We have to wait and see

SC2 has easyer/faster matchmaking and is more comfortable to play? It's not rocket science...

watch some pro BW games. you will understand.
as far as playing, some people can no longer stand the 400x640 resolution and hassle it takes to find games nowadays.
the people that complain that sc2 isnt like bw dont want them to be the same games, they want the same level of grandeur and originality which sparked from unit interactions in BW. they don't want to play bw, they want star2 to be as epic as bw

edit: i'm going to liken this to DotA. why will people buy dota2 if the game is already available for free? because the game looks nicer, is less of a hassle, and you don't need to download tons of 3rd party apps to even start playing the game.
I'm sure if blizz did a update to BW with nicer visuals & cleaner UI, and a easily available ladder, tons of people would play it. tons already play the sc2:bw mod, only reason why i dont is because its a huge wait to even find a game. a supported ladder for it would allow it to be played.

I still remember how BW was one year after its release (well, tbh in that time I still had just SC1) and It was awful.
BW is a game balanced thanks to the comunity, strats and incredible APM and multitasking. Blizzard just did some tweaks here and there, but most of the time, just let the community to balance it.
Jeez, I still remember my first games playing terran or protoss, and dying to 150 mine 4 pool because "wall in" wasn't popular yet.
For the casual gamer, SC2 is way better, since you can do all the thinking and decision making without having pro hands to handle with crap UI and pathing.
Anyway, sometimes I still enjoy old BW campaing and Evolves or special forces UMS

Just for some curious people. I play BW exclusively although I have played SC2.
Why?
Because :
1. I like it.
2. I love it.
3. Its fun.
4. I love the pro-scene.
Nope, not because of nostalgia. I only started BW last year. Is it because I hate SC2? Nope. SC2 is what made me interested in starting to play with the Starcraft frachise. If I can get good enough, I will try get a progamer license.
The limited UI?
I don't even notice it. Feels natural to me...

He's 100 % right. If I could play broodwar with SC2 noob-friendly mechanics and player base, I'd play broodwar. I remember how uneasy I felt after first month of SC2 beta coming back to broodwar.

Not a new argument, and i'll try to refrain from repeating the strengths of each game. To me, bw is the ultimate competitive rts. The reason why we complain is because we expected sc2 to be everything that bw was and more, and this wasn't the case. As Korea shows, pouring money into sc2 still cannot trump the (relatively) independent bw scene. If sc2 was the true succesor to be, you can bet that it would be far more popular in Korea.
