A new game is currently in sign ups over in the TL Mafia subforum. Its hidden, so you'll need to ask a mod for access, I believe.

What is mafia?

At the most basic, mafia is a game between two teams: The informined minority, the Mafia and the uninformed majority, the Townspeople. They must eliminate the other team.

This is done by having day and night phases. During the day, players discuss who they think the mafia might be and voting for that person to be lynched. The game then goes to the night phase, where mafia get to choose people to be killed, and other special roles can perform other abilities.

It doesn't matter if you've not played the game before, you should be able to drop right in and have some fun.

So, post here if you're interested, 30 players is the maximum.

For those with access, here is the thread.

I'm kind of interested, but do not fully understand how it works. Yes, guess who the mafia is, lynch them, etc, but how does one go by figuring such things out? :o

I'm interested regardless, though.

It can be very sophisticated, or very simple.

Its all mind games.

Since a normal townsperson does not know who anyone else is, they shouldn't be defending other peoples actions. You accuse people of acting suspiciously because of what they have said, or how they said it. Or you could simply feel that something is off, and vote that way.

The person with the most votes at the end of the day phase is lynched.

I know this is an offsite link, but this is a recently run mafia game by the person that helped me create this one, from sign ups to finish:

Don't do this actually. The mods like us to keep everything together if we can, so asking for access in this thread should be enough. And whatever you do, don't PM a mod asking for access. Plexa got really mad when a ton of people PMed him asking for access + posted in multiple threads asking for access a while ago.

For those wondering about the setup a bit, I copied the OP of this game and a generic OP just so you can get an idea of what the setups look like.

Hello, welcome to my first mafia game here, titled ‘Orgah Mafia’.

If you don’t know who I am, don’t worry, I’m still new to the mafia scene here, and to TL in general.

If you’re hesitating about signing up, feel free to take a look at any of the mafia games I’ve hosted.

The Fight for Inishmore! (32 players)
The Revenge of Inishmore (39 players)
The Riftwar (based on R.E. Feist's books) (43 players)

Game setting:
This game is set in a ficitional world, comprising of various areas and members from the forums at: forums.totalwar.org/vb

Story:

Something was off. Lemur could sense it. His lordship over the off topic area was filled with the usual spam and requests for advice on girl problems, but the usual mafia haven of the Gameroom was strangely quiet. Normally the most active place, communication had suddenly stopped. As a moderator, he had to investigate.

Lemur was no stranger to mafia. He had played in some of the very first mafia games at the .org, before the creation of the Gameroom. In fact, as he passed the entrance, he spotted a plaque with a quote that he had made in the early days. He smiled as he walked past, remembering the events.

The plaque reads:
"I'm going to need to collect all of the rants about the guilty lemur, and put them in a pretty box with ponies and pink bows. Then I'm going to sprinkle sparkly magic dust on the box, and kiss it." -Lemur

The entire area was deserted. Lemur was about to take out his cell phone when the sniper hit him.

The next day, 30 people gathered at Lemur’s corpse.

“Well,” said someone, “it finally looks like we get to do this for real guys. We all know the drill, one lynch a day until all the anti-town forces are gone.”

Game setup:
The setup is hidden, all that is publicly know is the following:

The mafia is comprised of 3 members, 2 grunts and a godfather. While 2 grunts are alive, the mafia have two kills. If one dies, the mafia drops to one kill. When the second grunt dies, the godfather gains the ability to kill twice per night. If the godfather dies, it is not game over, the remaining grunts (if any) may continue. Only when all three members die are the mafia eliminated.

There are also no ‘joker’ or ‘actor’ roles. No one will obtain victory by being lynched.

Each player has a section in red in their Role PM. This section will contain unique things for each player, and must be followed.

Game rules:

Voting must be bolded and in the format of Vote: pevergreen, for an unvote, please use Unvote, Vote: pevergreen or even better, include the person you are unvoting. If the votes are not bolded, your vote will not be counted.
To avoid the WoG (Wrath of God/Modkill), you must register a valid vote in at least 75% of day phases.
Vote: Abstain and Vote: No Lynch are ]not valid votes.
There is no voting thread, all votes are to be done in this thread.

Role PMs: In private, you may not reveal anything about your role, besides your name. You may not discuss, allude to, hint or in any way attempt to convince a person/party that you have a particular role (for example: doctor, sk, vig etc) or ability. You may, in public, reveal anything from your Role PM that is not red in colour.

Quoting Host/others PMs: You are allowed to quote PMs from the host or any other players. You are allowed to forge PMs.

Screenshots are not allowed. This means no screenshots of IM logs, IRC chat, PM or any other private communication from anyone.

Regarding death of players: The host will only reveal the players character name, not role or alignment.

Rules for the dead:
You are free to continue discussing as you would normally in and outside of the thread, with the condition that you do not reveal anything private you may have known while alive. (So no post death reveals of role, abilities or results) You may only comment about in thread events and anything you may have revealed in thread before your death. If you are seen trying to circumvent this rule, you will be asked to stop posting entirely. Once you are dead, you are free from any guidelines or constraints your role may have placed on you.
Alive players may not reveal anything to dead players.

Post gameOnce the game has ended, please do not reveal your role straight away, wait for the host to post a role list.

Each phase will last for approximately 24 hours, or as close to that as the host can manage. A strict deadline policy applies. If the cutoff for actions or voting is 9:00pm, anything posted/sent at 9:00pm is accepted, anything at 9:01pm is invalid.

Ties: In the event of a tie, something will happen. The outcomes are predetermined but unknown to any players.

Any kills in this game are to be written by those who perform them. If nothing is given, or changes need to be made for in game purposes (defended, role blocked etc) the host will modify or create the kill with no regard to how good it may have been before he touched it.

Summary lists will be provided at each phase end, and will include the usual

Alive:

Dead:

Lynched:

Other categories will be added as needed. For example: WoG (Modkill)

I am aiming for 30 players. This game will follow the banlist.

Introduction:

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch or kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking. If the mafia at any time outnumber or equal the townspeople, they win. The town's goal is to lynch all the members of the mafia.

The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game. If you do not have the time or patience to read the whole thread, do not play. I will not compensate for ignorance.

Rules:

Cheating:
Cheating includes (but is not limited to):
1. Posting after death. You may have one polite goodbye post, but it may not contain any potentially game-changing information.
2. Ruining the game by doing something like hand out your mafia's member list to the town.
3. Logging on to someone else's account / looking over someone's shoulder to get their role.
4. Comparing role PM times to determine roles.
5. Posting screenshots of your inbox.
6. Posting any PM you receive from a host.
7. Getting yourself modkilled to help your team. Your non-majority-decided death may not be used as a bargaining chip.
8. Signing up more than once using smurf accounts.
Cheating is not tolerated here. The punishment will be severe.

Posting:

Mod Font:
This is mod font. It is reserved for moderators. Please do not use it.

Question Font:
This is question font. Use it to ask the moderators questions about the rules.

Activity:
You must post in this thread once per day/night cycle and vote every day while you are alive. If you fail to do so, you will be modkilled.

Spam:
Spam is not tolerated, nor is any off-topic material. Do not discuss Proleague here. Do not talk about Starcraft II here. Play Mafia here.

Editing:
Editing is not allowed for any reason. Editing will result in a warning. After that, you will be modkilled. This is the one part of the site where it is okay to be double posting, even triple-posting. While I ask for everybody to post as concisely as possible, post again if you have to edit anything

Inappropriate posts:
If you want to post something insulting or inappropriate and know the TL mods would have a problem with it elsewhere, don't post it here. If you do, a host will warn you or modkill you and request that you be banned from future games. The hosts have the final say on what is inappropriate.

Play to win.

You have been warned.

Something burning-hot and life-ending this way comes.

Voting rules:

1. Voting is done (in a separate thread, located *here*) (in this thread). Please keep votes there, and only vote there. Do not PM me your vote.
2. Please vote in the following format: ##Vote Qatol. Votes not done in the correct fashion will not be counted. I will update vote counts whenever I get the chance.
3. No conditional voting.
4. You may vote for yourself. You may not vote for anyone dead or outside the game.
5. In the event of a tie the person with the most votes first wins (or loses).
6. Voting is mandatory. You may (NOT) abstain.

Signups:

This game is open to anyone (with preference for (new or experienced) players). Signups will remain open until (all (player number here) spots have been filled) (date).

Game-specific rules:

Modkills:
This game follows (does not follow) the TL Mafia Ban List. If you are modkilled, your punishment will (will not) go beyond being eliminated from this game. Please refer to it for questions about your punishment.

Clues:
There are (no) clues.

PMs
PMs are (not) allowed in this game.

Time Cycle:
This game will follow a (24 hour night/48 hour) day cycle. In case I am not able to post around deadline, any votes after the 48 hour mark will not count and the game will be put on halt until the night post is up. Currently the deadline is time, but that is subject to change.

Credits:
Thanks to anyone who has ever hosted a game. This list grows ever longer.
Thanks to everyone who helped balance this game.

If you have not read all the rules, go back and do so. I will not compensate for ignorance!

After you get access, we have 3 years worth of games for you to look through until you get the idea. We also have guides on how to play as mafia or town.

I guess the thing is that I don't understand how to play, and can't find much of a description anywhere. It's explained how to vote for people and what voting means, but how does one get to the process of voting?

You vote to lynch people.. but why are they being lynched? How do you know they are the mafia? What does somebody type that is open to interpretation to which other players will have to guess? What scenario drives us to decide who to vote for and why? This is what I'm confused about.

Edit: Either way, I am interested, if somebody could give me access. I'm sure I'll find answers to the above questions by reading through these "3 years worth of games."

Ok, so lets say a day starts.

In the night previous, some actions happened, these are communicated by the write up.

People start posting, and they make cases as to who they think the mafia is. Other people do the same, some people cut down accusations of others because the reasoning may be faulty. People defend themselves from accusations.

You vote by simply doing this in any of your posts:

Vote: pevergreen

That would signal to everyone that you believe I should be lynched. To change, you Unvote, Vote: someone else

Why are they being lynched? Because enough people voted for them, thinking they are suspicious enough to die.
You don't know who is who as part of the town. Thats the mystery and objective of it. You are part of the uninformed majority.
"What does somebody type that is open to interpretation to which other players will have to guess?"

Not sure what you mean by this, but I'm taking it as what you could use as reasoning to vote for someone.

Someone could demonstrate Perfect Information Syndrone. This is not really used AFAIK as reasoning here at TL.net mafia, but allow me to take the explanation of it from where I play mafia:

Perfect Information Syndrome: When a mafioso accidentally reveals he knows more than the average uninformed townie really should, either through directly declaring such information while talking about something else, or through their voting patterns. Example:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read: + Show Spoiler +

(And foundation of another concept, Mafia ESP) Star Wars: Return of the Sith hosted by Sigurd, Subotan's voting pattern indicated that he knew who would be alive and who would be murdered by the end of the game, because his votes nicely complemented his murders, and he rarely ended up voting for people who ended up surviving to near the endgame. [There are better and less complicated examples of this... such as accidentally blurting out knowledge of some hidden or in-depth quirk about the game that a common townie shouldn't know]

I really encourage you to take a look at this game: http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?132326-South-Park-Imaginationland-Concluded

It is less confusing in the way the people post and make arguments as to who to lynch. It is also fairly short (less than 200 posts, including sign ups) and will be similar to this game.

How do I get access to that forum?
