Wall of workers

Hey guys, Im a zerg player and I love my speedling worker harass, but theres a certain tactic the victim can use that pretty much nullifies a speedling infestation of the worker line: the worker wall!

Probably easiest for terran, but what you do is group your workers in a ball, and place them in between your marines and the attacking speedlings in hold position. Once the marines start firing, the speedlings FLIP out and start running in circles because of stupid AI. They can't find a path to the marines which have a higher threat level, so instead they just die and do 0 damage.

The only way to do any damage at all is attack the workers one at a time which can be extremely micro intensive if you try to control more than one group. if you only control one group, only a very small amount will actually attack the worker, while the rest run in circles taking hits from the marines.

How I wish units with no path to their desired target would instead auto-target the units in the way

So what do you want us to say? o.0
This is basic rush drill 101 from Brood War... There's no other way to do it if they're workers dont attack your zerglings.

Ways to avoid it?

For example, splitting your lings into two groups and pinching the worker line from each side to hopefully cut off an escape.

Including banelings for the "wall".

I'm not an expert, so hopefully theres some other good ideas..

Another solution: keep doing it. Even if you do not manage to kill SCVs, you are still denying mining time. Just keep retreating and reengaging.

I have to agree. This is the real threat of early lings/zlots.

I find this early game mechanic makes it much easier for terran to defend harrass from zerg, than protoss. With zealots and probes defending, the zerglings auto target the probes, resulting in lots of pain for the protoss. With scvs hold position or autorepair, the lings do not try and target the scvs, and thefore act retarded. The targeting system should be conisistent, either always target workers (same priority as other units), or never target workers (unless they are alone), like in brood war. It shouldn't matter whether the workers are attacking or not.

How are you getting your speedlings into their base at all? Most terrans would have blocked off by than.

I must agree with that! If your lings are in their base, they may have forsaken a wall which is pretty nifty for scouting which ever push they are going to try, or perhaps you are doing a ling rush build? In which case you can take down the depot or attack the rax and make it lift and stop it from landing.

Once they do this, run away. They are not mining during that time so no need to attack anything. When they go back to mining, attack again and have them pull their SCV again. Go back to step 1.

Correct answer. With good micro you will keep their income very low. Roaches come in and clean up.

And whatever you do, do not get surrounded. I love worker surrouding 6 pool noobs. Feels so good to trade 2 workers for 6 lings and then watch a ragequit.

Key is to never let them up your ramp to begin with... and if you do manage to get past anyways, smart building placement can help you delay long enough to get a stalker/voidray out. I generally find that even with 3 lots and 2 cannons the zerg goes "ha, what a weakly defended ramp!" and tries to break it- usually succeeds just barely, but they end up wasting a lot more resources (especially since it costs them drone production to be building the lings/roaches/banelings) and they're behind on tech, so they're at a disadvantage. At least if you defend well. You can't just hammer the lings with probes- you have to run them to your zealots and only engage when your zealots are attacking. Otherwise they just melt.

The guy is 6 pooling imo since its like 1 marine + scvs vs 6 lings. Yea it's a micro fest but just keep pulling back and running around while you macro up. The ling running back and forth keeping you from mining effectively is 'almost' as effective as sheer wiping out the mineral line. And if they make a micro mistake and leave his marines exposed before he starts hitting critical mass (Snipe snipe) and possible gg.

If you have enough speedling, and the SCVs already got a good surround, then just attack the SCVs.

I always pull my lings away when they pull SCVs off to engage my drones.

It may not seem like it, but it gives you a huge opportunity. If he pulls off 10 SCVs for 5 seconds, that's 50 minerals he wastes and 1 less marine he'll be able to build - early game that's pretty huge.

Attack SCVs, once he pulls off then you pull off too. He goes back to mins, you attack.

Like someone said, ling rush 101.

yea the ling prioritize the rines unless the SCVs are on attack move. This is well known. Best thing to do is pull away, he has to go back to mining otherwise he will really lose eco. Keep up the harass!
