Bushido doesn't mean shit when it's riflemen vs. longswords :D That's all well and good, but comparable tech levels are far more likely than total tech outclassing (assuming against humans or sufficiently difficult AI). In fact, since Japanese armies are so much more efficient throughout the entire game, they don't need to devote as much production to military to achieve the same results, and can focus on building libraries, universities, and such.

Makes wars a little longer, but you take a lot less damage. Japan is certainly no slouch but I'm personally more afraid of Cho-Ku-Nus (either China or Korea, I forget) than Bushido. To those who don't know what those do, they are crossbowmen that can fire twice each turn. Give them the military tradition policy (under Honor, which gives them double EXP) then they're getting 12 EXP per turn, which is either crazy crazy promotions or constant, unending healing. The city siege upgrade (at level 3 or 4) is super crazy for them, too.

![]() First thing I did was kill the barbarians to our west, which had the neat side effect of befriending Genoa. Can't argue with free apples! ![]() We got engineering for our research agreement with England, and a great engineer popped in Liquidia (was that a coincidence)? In any case, I managed to secure two new research agreements with Persia and that angry-looking black guy guy with the sword for less than 200 gold each. ![]() England wants a pact of secrecy against Wu Zetian, which I agree to since we're right next to England and Wu hasn't been much of a trading partner. I finished connecting our cities, and made a bunch of trading posts. ![]() Acoustics finishes, and we're in the Renaissance! Cool new music starts playing and I turn my volume up. I could have sworn I took a screenshot of the tech tree after this, but I guess it didn't save. I decided to go for Scientific Theory, which involves getting a bunch of naval techs on the way but will open up the observatory and public schools. I figured this was more useful than catching up on military techs and unlocking musketeers since it doesn't seem like we're going to use them (maybe we can pick a single civ to annex with foreign legions once they are out much later?). The ability to make oceangoing ships will also allow us to explore the rest of the globe and make new friends. Is there a bonus in civ5 for circumnavigating the globe? ![]() Angry guy also wants a pact of secrecy against Wu also. I figure why the hell not and say yes. ![]() Forgive me if this was a bad move, but I used the engineer to build the Sistine Chapel. I figured the culture will help us fill out the rationalism tree sooner (which I started but apparently didn't screenshot). ![]() It has the side effect of making Genoa our ally (just as friendship was set to expire) for a bunch more apples. Huzzah!

Turns in Civ5 take a long time to do, but the game progresses in a lot fewer turns it seems. Will do my turn tonight or tomorrow. It's probably because you guys aren't playing on epic speed, which you did do on Civ IV.

That would explain why we're progressing so, well, quickly.

Well, yes, but even compared to Quick Civ4 I think we're progressing quite fast for the 20-turn rule used in Civ4 successions. Edit: Actually, successions are usually in marathon, arent they? Oops.

Both epic and normal speed are common (epic probably more common). Quick is rare.

Epic is usually the best choice. Not a huge deal though, we can just do Epic for next game ^^
