The double XP is the part that really gets my saliva flowing, along with the 15% bonus for flanking. I would imagine that trying to do some kind of domination/conquest victory (or opening, like a samurai rush or something) would be much harder without getting the honor tree

Picture unrelated since I haven't got the DLC, attempted OCC cultural win on my third game (I'm an achievement whore):

I must say that after over 30 hours of playing this game, I'm very disappointed. I expected epic new civ and I got Civilization: Beginner's Edition where everything is dumbed down a lot
Oh, how I miss the proper diplomacy overview (or the proper diplomacy for that matter), health issues, trade network and something actually happening in the game (seriously, have you noticed they even included "Auto end turn" button in C5?! I've spent half of this game just sitting in front of the screen, sipping tea and watching turns go by...).

I've been looking at this tree for a while now. I don't think it's any good but the next thing I'm going to try is military Monty with this just to see how much culture he gets from the kills ^_^

I imagine it will have a few extra layers of complexity after an expansion or two.

Really, you're disappointed? I've only played Civ1, Civ2, and Civ3, but I find this is the best game of the series since Civ2. They removed a lot of clunky and confusing (or at least obscure) stuff that has plagued Civ since the beginning, and Civ5 finally feels like a cohesive, intuitive game. I think emphasizing Gold and removing the tax/science slider and providing additional incentives to happiness without having unhappiness cripple you suddenly were all genius design decisions. Unit promotion upgrades are fun and unique. I understand the more straightforward and flexible diplomacy options, but they don't feel as fun as Civ2. Culture is actually implemented very well unlike Civ3 and policies open up a ton of possibilities. Overall I'm extremely pleased with this game.

@Biochemist:
Nice writeup :D. Actually the decision to build Sistine Chapel with a GE is good. Sistine is a very useful wonder.
Did you maintain the relationship with Helsinki? I think we need both Genoa and Helsinki to be our allies.
...and next time would you please resize the image...I cant see the whole images

Probably because you're playing on marathon or epic length. This game is on quick length, so it's going a lot faster than normal.

I've set it to quick with 8 players but its still taking forever to calculate turns.

I'm not talking about late games with millions of units and buildings, even at game start with just a settler and warrior. It takes like 10 seconds just to go through turns and I have a 6 core 1055T CPU :/

I played the original Civ and it wasn't like this. The late games were a nightmare though when it takes forever to wait for AI turns but early games were instant and it was on a Pentium 3 :/

I'm actually going to pass to the next person, sorry! Setting a bad standard, being the OP, I know, but I'm playing in MLG DC next weekend and need to practice, even though I'm expecting to lose after 2 rounds. Should have passed 2 days ago, but that's my mistake

EDIT: Polarn passes, too. Next up.. Let's see if Antilegend is here this time?

In earlier civs you could just turn "show enemy/allied/etc. moves on or off" and selecting the movement speed of units which could affect the pace a lot (at the expense of information).

And yet another thing that disappointed me in C5: After C4 and the only missing feature there from C3 I really did hope that since they managed to create this highly detailed leader scenes that they would re-introduce leader appearance changing according to the era they're in. It was such a nice touch in C3

My Civ5 crashes every 15-20 turns. Music still playing and I can move the cursor, but the game is frozen and I can't click on anything. Have to alt-tab and kill the process. REALLY GODDAMN ANNOYING. Anyone else have this problem?

The game autosaves every 10 turns, so it's only really annoying when it crashes at something like turn 49 (after reloading it at 40 from the last crash).

Edit: just reloaded AGAIN at turn 40 and it made it all the way to 42. Screw this

btw, someone figured out how to make the save games compatible between dlc/non-dlc players.

since our game is carefully designed not to contain any trace of babylon, i guess that method should work:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
History of the French people, turn 120-140
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

T120:

Right off the bat i notice a settler in the north

+ Show Spoiler +

Since it isn't on automove, and my predecessor hasn't stated what to do with it, i guess it's up to me to find a good city site.

After having played some games of CiV, my top priority for city sites is capturing happiness resources. Each city produces 2 and each citizen produces 1 unhappiness (captured foreign cities even generate more) and once your empire reaches a certain level of unhappiness you have will suffer some nasty negative effects (cities stop growing & get less productive, army fights worse). I found that balancing happiness can become a huge problem later.

I moved all the units we have towards the fog, but there just seem to be no umclaimed happiness resources available, so i will settle on one of the recommended (the golden city icons) tiles. The left one grants quicker access to the hill tiles in the west, but the right one is coastal and would allow us to build a navy at that city if we wish to.
ac
For the moment I'd choose the coastal spot, but i won't found the city asap, since we have a policy incoming in 7 turns (founding a city increases the amount of culture needed to get access to the next policy), and our happiness is at zero (= we generate just enough happiness to equalize the unhappiness)

Next thing I notice, is that we have too many roads. See:

+ Show Spoiler +

Each piece of road costs us 1 gold per turn, so we should imho focus on just use as many roads as we need to get all cities connected to the capital. I propose rebuilding the connection between Liquidia and A Fruit Stand (we can save 1 gold), remove the road that is being built between Paris and Orleans (which would cost us 8 gold once completed) and just connect AFS with Orleans. Since our treasury is running good at the moment, i guess building it the most cost efficient way can wait, I will in my turns just try to get Orleans connected.

Since we are already at the happiness limit, i juggle around some citizens, and after checking if there are any possible deals to be made (which there aren't), i press Next Turn.

T 121:

First thing that pops up is Elizabeth:

+ Show Spoiler +

uh, "Very well", I guess...

Not really much else happening, i reactivated some units to scout some more, gave some worker orders, moved on to

T 122:

Hmm, where have I heard that again?

+ Show Spoiler +

we're of course verry sorry...

we discover some babarians... with our settler... i'll recall the spearman to take them out

+ Show Spoiler +

T 123:

someone stole our wonder

+ Show Spoiler +

at least we got some nice cash for it. I build a Chariot Archer in liquidia (only takes 1 turn), since i want to explore the map a bit more.

Darius has entered the Renaissance era.

T 124:

+ Show Spoiler +

do we want war? i'd say, not yet

+ Show Spoiler +

shiny new technology! finally we can go overseas!

+ Show Spoiler +

Paris finishes a temple. I notice we can build the National College (can only be built if each city has a library), so I choose to build it, before we get another city and have to wait for another library to finish

+ Show Spoiler +

Liquidia finishes something (forgot what it was ). Since we can build better ships now and there is still a lot to discover, i start building a caravel

+ Show Spoiler +

T 125:

I notice we could settle near another happiness resource! The area around it looks good too (Plains with river = gold + hammer)

+ Show Spoiler +

T 126:

I started a colosseum in AFS to increase our happiness

T 127:

Yay, we grab another social policy! Since we're somewhat on the science route and we basically only have trade ports, i choose this one:

+ Show Spoiler +

T 128:

Clearing the barbs near our potential new settlement:

+ Show Spoiler +

Buying more food:

+ Show Spoiler +

Another wonder we didn't get

+ Show Spoiler +

T 129:

Relations to Elizabeth somewhat worsens.

+ Show Spoiler +

T 130:

Research agreement finishes:

+ Show Spoiler +

T 131:

neeeext

+ Show Spoiler +

Orleans finishes university, I order a new settler. That one should be able to secure the sugar location.

+ Show Spoiler +

T 132:

we get a Great Artist. I don't really know what to do with him, i think the best purpose would be using him for a golden age. Anyways, I parked him outside of Liquidia if someone wants to use him.

+ Show Spoiler +

Lizy builds a wonder

+ Show Spoiler +

Our caravel has found land in the east! Since we get the full 30 gold bonus we seem to be the first ones here.

+ Show Spoiler +

Paris has finished the National College! I notice we can build Oxford now, so i give the order to build it. Since I doubt we're really in a hurry to build it, and the reward isn't THAT good, I maximize the cities science output for now.

T 133-136:

Somehow not really much happened. Nothing reportworthy at least...

T 137:

We finish Scientific Method! And we have (almost) access to coal. I've sent some workers to the locations.

+ Show Spoiler +

Although we received many technologies, this is the first time i am asked to choose a new technology to research. Although I don't see ourselves in immediate danger, I think we should build at least some more modern units, so i choose to head for our unique unit, the musketeer!

+ Show Spoiler +

T 138:

We meet another maritime city state, which also posseses a happiness resource we don't have. The next player should try to get them to allied status!

+ Show Spoiler +

T 140:

Liquidia has finished a garden (+25% great people (i.e. great scientist) points in this city), AFS has finished another caravel (for exploration to the west)

===========================

So, where do we go from here?

At the moment our empire is pretty much science focused. In each city the library and university specialist slots are in use, mainly trade ports are being worked. We have +8 happiness, so we can now easily afford to either expand or let our cities grow some more. There are two settlers in place, the southern one would give us access to another +5 happiness. We should also try to achieve ally-status with the new maritime city state to the south, since they would also give us +5 happiness (via whales) and another food boost to increase population growth. We will get another social policy in 2 turns, so we should not build another city before turn 142.

Military-wise we should have access to musketeers in ~3 turns. Maybe we should muster a small army (i think 3 musketeers + the great general in AFS would be enough) and grab London for it's wonders and happiness resources?

Our gold incomine recently went into the red, but some more population working trade ports should be able to correct that.

There are btw. several Ancient Ruins and babarians on the land i scouted to the east, so we might also send a military unit over there to pick them up.
