This thread is for discussing recent bans. Don't discuss other topics here. Take it to website feedback if you disagree with a ban or want to raise an issue. Keep it civil.NOTE: For those of you who want to find the actual ABL thread where the bans are posted. Please look in here: https://tl.net/forum/closed-threads/ |
Alright, just finished reading up on the Scarlett joins eclypsia thread... I'm not sure whether to cry, laugh, or shake my head in disbelief.
I suppose I'll compromise and weep my ass off in disbelief. Such a concentrated amount of stupidity, especially at the more recent pages where people started claiming that "teh moads!!!11" are impeding freedom of speech, and they're turkin' arr liberties an' arr whit wimmen. At least I think that's how it went.
I wonder if the TL community (or, really, any online community) can ever mature to a point where a transgender person can be involved in anything without the moderator action necessary to calm the mass idiocy being something like the image below:
+ Show Spoiler + P4ndemik on the left, pholon on the right
You know, I always find it's important to distinguish between how someone is online and how they are IRL. I'm sure there's plenty of banned users on TL that are perfectly nice and approachable people in real life. But with the majority of the bans that happened in that thread? Dear god, I can only imagine they're all some sort of horrible deranged monsters sitting in front of their computers, waggling and waiting for an opportunity to say something completely goddamned stupid.

P.S. Moderators, a warning to me please!
User was warned for this post Why do people do that Are they trying to look clever by "predicting" their warning? This is another good reason to lurk for a month or two (if not longer) before posting. Terrible... Man I lurked for 6 months because I was honestly scared of fucking up and getting IP banned or something like that. I didn't even come close to wanting to do anything that would cause me to never be able to access this website again. Haha I did the same thing. Not everyone is like that though ^^
Haha! That fear is a real detterent from posting, yea. I have at least learned to think long and well through it before i post on this site, and others :D
This also proves that harsh punishment is an effective detterent to further wrongdoing. I got a sudden urge to apologize to someone in the Anders Bering Breivik trial thread, but i realised i should rather spend my time getting my schoolpaper done for tomorrow

I would say no. But then again I also believe the vast majority of the human race is hopelessly stupid.
Honestly I get the issue. Transgender issues are still something that many people have very strong personal, religious, and moral opinions on. I don't expect everyone to agree with my opinions or the opinions of anyone else on the topic. In fact if everyone agreed on these issues the world would be a sucky boring place.
But like we saw in that thread about the cop shooting caught on camera, there are a lot of individuals who can't seem to control their emotions and allow them to dictate their behavior and discourse. Of course, leading to massive quantities of extremely stupid and uninformed comments, and subsequently bans.
Just because you have extremely strong opinions on one side or the other of this issue does not give you the right to shit all over every topic about Scarlett. Make a discussion thread about it in General then.

Just because you have extremely strong opinions on one side or the other of this issue does not give you the right to shit all over every topic about Scarlett. Make a discussion thread about it in General then. In the short term, I agree with you. I think that the Scarlett thread would require a lot of moderation even if she were a standard issue human female. The community is still very immature in a lot of ways. In the long term, though, I disagree. Prejudice is bred in the darkness of ignorance, and familiarity is the sunlight that destroys it. I'd like to think that Scarlett will experience the worst of the hate from TL. The next transgendered player to go pro will get less of it, because some percentage of the community will have been exposed to a transgendered community member and will have gotten over the instinctive urge to reject the unfamiliar. I think that Scarlett's arrival has already made the community better: I know that I've become aware that at least one of the posters I'm familiar with is also transgendered, which I learned as a direct result of Scarlett's arrival on the scene. I can't be the only person who's been made more aware of the existence (and normal human-ness) of such people in our community.
I don't think that a black pro would experience prejudice to the extent that Scarlett is. I'm certain a Jewish player wouldn't. I think the community is maturing (slowly, oh so slowly), and that we have to try to understand that behind the superficial explosion of idiocy and ignorance that accompanies the arrival of a new community member from a minority most of us aren't familiar with, there is also a massive increase in familiarity in the community as a whole. I think we're getting better.

And Ban-aggedon leads to a hope in a better future for the TL human race!

Hardly an exceptional viewpoint, let alone ban-worthy, IMHO. Why can't there be more tolerance all around? other than the mods saying don't discuss it, the reason people call scarlett a man is to make fun of her or go the extra level and demean her and it's all just to express how incredibly witty they are on the interwebs. the problem is that it's juvenile and the overall intent is just to troll.
That's the thing. It really is juvenile.
Recently, Grantland (the Bill Simmons site on ESPN) allowed people to post comments on the articles using Facebook. There was an article today about kickoffs in the NFL and player safety. There was the predictable avalanche of stupid posts making comments like taking concussions being manly. However, since the posts were made using Facebook, we could see that the vast majority of the posts were made by juveniles in high school and college.
Mods really have their work cut out for them to stop kids from using forums as an extension of their high school.

You know what I just realized? It's pretty sad that a thread about a awesome female starcraft player causes such a massive ban wave and a necro thread about masturbation and dicks is clean from even a single warning(not that it deserves any mod action its just kinda weird just looking at the subjects) Sigh....we still have ways to go.

Juvenile, immature, those words have been thrown around a lot lately about this community and this proves it once again

Now I know how soldiers feel after the end of a great war.
As the sun slowly rises on a new day, gazing out across the field of battle to see bodies piled high; some friends, some enemies. Some injured, others gone forever. I know the fight was inevitable, the battle had to happen. But still, one wonders if there was something that could have been done to prevent this attrocity. Why couldn't the enemy just see reason? Why did they have to fight us? They never had a chance in hell against us. They must have known we couldn't allow them to win, the results would've been total chaos.
But still they came, unwavering and unrelenting. Shouting their chaotic cries as they raced toward our battle line. Suddenly from over the hill spilled a moving mass, like water rushing down a mountain. The unmistakable crack of Inquisitor Heyoka's laser rifle rang out from above. One by one they began to fall as they rushed towards us. The force hammer of the mighty Sergeant Pholon sang as it plunged through the air, crushing the skulls of anyone found in it's path and effortlessly flinging their lifeless bodies into the air.
From behind came a great rallying cry in the name of Emperor Nazgul, followed by a deafening roar as Sergeant p4NDemik's bolter began slicing through the enemy lines. Suddenly something tore through the enemy lines, like lightning striking a tree. It was company champion Kwark, with a chainsword in one hand and a plasma pistol he was as a great tornado of destruction. Yet he moved with great speed and purpose, never in accurate ever shot landed precisely on target.
Our Imperial guard weapons were useless against the corrupted ones, there was little we could do but call out targets. Though our great city was under siege from the warp spawn, we had no choice but to put our faith in the great warriors of the Emperor. The battle tore on for what seemed like years, as an endless stream of chaos poured over the hill and fell upon our lines like water on rock. But then came a horrible sound, like the cry of a soul tortured for millenia. Over the hill lumbered a great deamon towering over all, with huge black wings and long sharp horns. A Bloodthirster. We were finished. Emperor have mercy on us, we were all going to die here, failing in our mission to protect the city.
But from behind us came a great blast. A massive shell flashed over us and landed squarly on the great deamon. He reeled back, phased and disoritended, then came another. The distinctive sound of large calibre heavy bolter rounds snaped overhead, all of them finding their target. Two more shells. The great beast lumbered sideways and crashed to the ground with massive dull thud.
We wheeled around to see the source of our salvation. We saw none other than the mighty Captain Kennigit, standing a top a dreadnought like a great metal steed and flanked by two rumbling Predator tanks. The battle line erupted in cheers, as the smoke cleared from the battle field I could just make out the massive forms of Sergeant Pholon and p4NDemik standing over a pile of their slain enemies, as Kwark finished off those who still moved.
The battle was over, the enemy vanquished in the name of the Emperor. But at what cost I wonder?

But at what cost I wonder?
Lots of bans for the Ban God is the price that must be paid to preserve the Empire.

That was what I pictured in my head, thanks for fleshing that out hahaha

You see, the scarlett thread, along with the moletrap thread, are some more reasons why I prefer hamsters to human beings. Hamsters don't bitch and complain about transgender individuals, they're not snide, arrogant bastards. All they demand is something to grind their teeth on, some food and water, and a house filled with cotton. They're also amazingly adorable, whereas the average human being is lost in self-consciousness and desperately trying to look good to society at large.
Take my advice. Replace your friends. Get a hamster.
As further irrefutable evidence, how many hamsters have ever been banned on TL for being complete dicks? Ok, now how many humans?
I rest my case.
edit: If one remains unconvinced, I will cite the "Hamsters sunt frigus" thesis, commonly referred to as the "Holy shit, Hamsters are bastard cannibal antisocial murdering badasses" theory. I cite as my prime example: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=124380

Meh, as far as scarlett thread goes, i don't understand how so many people could derail the thread so damn much.

Well, still a pretty solid ratio in favor of the hamsters.

For the first time since I can remember, the ABL thread is updating more than the actual ban list. Patented TL ban obsession. :D

Yes, but out of thousands of bans, only ONE was a hamster. The rest were human. Clearly humans are the inferior species.
In fact, we could take the TL ban statistics even further. Think about it. The majority of bans are males, meaning males are worse people than females. No wonder everyone getting banned wants to insist on calling Scarlett a male! They're projecting the inferiority of their OWN gender! (mine too, sadly, I must be a disgrace for being so kind, loving, and tolerant)
