Yup, you too, can be like Milkis, tweeting to thousands of followers while being invited to debate with the owners of prominent e-Sports teams on popular podcasts, and go to MLG and hang out with Boxer all day.

Okay, I guess I can't really guarantee that in good faith. But you have to start somewhere!

This job posting is also listed in http://www.teamliquid.net/jobs/

Position: Translator*
Hiring Period: Indefinite
Number of Positions: Undetermined

Description
TeamLiquid is recruiting Korean to English and Chinese to English translators. Translators will be responsible for the translation of ESPORTS related texts of interest, which we expect to be mostly comprised of interviews and news articles. We are looking for translators for both Starcraft: Brood War and Starcraft 2 related materials.

Translators should be self-motivated and find articles of interest to translate on a regular basis and also be available to translate specific articles on request.

Requirements
Fluency or near-fluency in both the source and translation language.

Familiarity with the ESPORTS scenes in Korea/China and the important community/news sites in their respective scenes.

Application Process
Send an application containing the following to k.woo@teamliquid.net (WaxAngel)

  • Your TeamLiquid ID and online messenger contact information (MSN, AIM, Gchat, Skype etc).

  • Two sample translations of ESPORTS related articles. Preferably one interview and one news article.

*This is an unpaid position.

PS: Thanks to everyone who applied for the writing position a few months ago! The first round of hiring is over, and we're trying to organize what we have now. All the applications are still on file, and we'll be looking through them again to fill future needs.

My procrastination knows no bounds, and I guess even if I feel like translating periodically I would prefer being an free-lancer. Hope some other dedicated translators decide to join TL though

All those weeks of listening to the Taiwanese SC2 league is finally going to pay off, now that I learned the Chinese SC2 vocabulary!

I'm happy to do as-needed translations instead of having to search out articles/interviews to do. Any chance there is a part-time volunteer spot just for that? My full-time job doesn't really leave me with much time to explore outside of TL/reddit.

He's talking about the writers not the translators.

I might give this a shot. I did a few of translations back in the Jan/Feb GSLs but stopped due to my uni projects. Having graduated now, I feel like I could and should contribute more to the site considering how I spend a lot of time here.

I think he was probably talking in terms of deadlines for translations, e.g. 2 days to do a translation or something.

All TL jobs are unpaid! But they are gonna make money from that! Nice move... At least say that is a possibility for some people, if they are good in their jobs and do it well enough, to get paid a little bit! I don't want to take part in it (with money or without) but i find it unappropriated to seek only for free employers all the time!
I could make some translations for free but not this to be a job for me... So seek for volunteers to make translations whenever they can and to contribute to the community OR seek for employers to make this translations on a deadline and give them the chance to get something out of it! At least say that there is a chance and not all of them are gonna be paid!

They're volunteers, not employees, and as far as I know, no one on staff get paid except for the very, very selected few (and they do more than just one aspect of TL).

Yeah for that and to pay for daily delivery of fancy foods to their office..

Most of the content of this site is generated by unpaid people in their free time and 3-4 are living the good life off it completely. Which ever way you look at it, it is kind of an unfair business model.

?? I don't really get it. If the hiring period is indefinite, why would there be a deadline on the submission of applications? Oh, do you mean like applying first and then sending in the translations? I don't see why shouldn't send it in together.

He's delusional and approaching the whole thing incorrectly. He doesn't know how much TL makes but thinks that all of TL's costs are enough to shoulder off and pay the few people paid, exorbitant amounts.

The insinuation is just ignorant conspiracy on your part darkwon.

I laughed at the well paid part, but I do admit it's fun :o

Even if it is well paid it doesn't matter because renting living space in New York costs roughly infinity dollars.

those looking for Chinese translation examples -- I don't know how big the interest is overall, but I for one, would be interested to hear more about what the Taiwanese eSports league is up to (http://www.esports.com.tw/). Even the liquipedia article could use more elaboration.

Is there a deadline? I am a native Chinese speaker and my English writing is pretty good, IMHO, so I will definitely try this out, although I am not very knowledgeable about the Chinese scene and, to quote TotalBiscuit, I Suck At Starcraft 2.

Anyone got any good Chinese websites where I can/should start? Thanks!

Also, will this at least get me a cool icon?

lol no. I was thinking of doing it as a second job. It's hardly 2nd job since I'm already involved in esports and spend lot of time at TL anyway. I'm kinda reluctant to apply though since I can't guarantee I will be able to do translation every time as I can get really busy at the office sometimes.

To be honest, burnout kicks in with any translator role.
I do K-Pop stuff for the most part but it's seriously soul sapping, even when you're looking at pretty girls the entire time.

Often, translating is more difficult than writing the original material in the first place.

The language in writing form is virtually the same, when speaking however it is pronounced differently and has different amounts of tones (Mandarin having 5 and Cantonese having 9) which is why Mandarin and Cantonese can't understand each other.

While generally true, there are nuances in grammar and syntax involved in each of the spoken forms that causes complete confusion, one example being the character 走 would mean 'to walk' in Mandarin but 'to run' in Cantonese.. many such examples unfortunately makes learning the other dialects a pain ..

Yes you're right which is why I wrote virtually the same. This is a starcraft forum, how many times is someone going to have to translate 走 for us :p

On a serious note: I think for people wanting to xlate Chinese mandarin is the best bet because most people even in Cantonese speaking areas are having to learn Mandarin as a "second language" (for lack of a better word).

It also makes it really hard for us somewhat-tone-deaf people to learn Cantonese. I still have no idea how I manage to learn Mandarin.

AFAIK, Mandarin has 4 tones, no?

There is no language called chinese, it's called mandarin! get your facts right :D

The language in writing form is virtually the same, when speaking however it is pronounced differently and has different amounts of tones (Mandarin having 5 and Cantonese having 9) which is why Mandarin and Cantonese can't understand each other.

While generally true, there are nuances in grammar and syntax involved in each of the spoken forms that causes complete confusion, one example being the character 走 would mean 'to walk' in Mandarin but 'to run' in Cantonese.. many such examples unfortunately makes learning the other dialects a pain ..

....? What? 我走回家。has a different meaning for Chinese readers who speak Cantonese?

I'm making a careful distinction here, because the written Chinese language is supposed to be standardized, but it is a surprise to me to find out that those who speak Cantonese view the same characters but derive a different meaning than I would, as someone who speaks Mandarin.

I really don't believe that Cantonese people see character's differently. The whole point of at least "simplified" was to unite the country, into being able to read all of the news papers, so words having different meanings (maybe varients I can see) is kind of counter-intuitive.

It also makes it really hard for us somewhat-tone-deaf people to learn Cantonese. I still have no idea how I manage to learn Mandarin.

AFAIK, Mandarin has 4 tones, no?

I can translate american into english ... no winningest from me

The above conversation is really interesting... do you mean radically different in meaning?

Because there are a lot of complex english statements that mean totally different things to me (studied a LOT of philosophy) and anyone else in the know than most people think.

I would totally do Chinese -> English if it weren't for the fact that I am completely unfamiliar with Chinese internet speak (and Chinese names for SC units / terms, for that matter). :T

The annoying part for the chinese translators would be the fact that the simplified and traditional chinese versions of starcraft have differing names, including the title itself, simplified being 星际争霸 (stellar war for hegemony) and traditional being 星海爭霸 (hegemonic war for the sea of stars)

I've never seen the latter used, so that hasn't been a problem for me. Although I have seen the abbreviation "星际."

@ WaxAngel , I email my application yesterday. Hopefully it will catch your attention.

P.S, another alias for Banshee besides “女妖” is “阿凡达” inspired by the resemblance of Avator's Aerospatiale SA-2 Samson by James Cameron.

The first word Kerrigan said to Raynor was "...You Pig!", to Raynor's response "What? ... oh you're a psychic"

If it is an unpaid position what is the point of the application/hiring process. Do hired translators get some hidden articles and interviews that are unavailable otherwise or is this basically just for a symbol by their name?
