Hi everybody,
Happy owner of a Filco Majestouch, I've been wondering if I could create custom keycaps to put on my Cherry MX switches. I have therefore contacted http://www.keycapsdirect.com/ to see what the prices would be for making such keys, preferably with 2-shot printing.
![[image loading]](http://www.keycapsdirect.com/images/custom/custom-keycaps-1.jpg) 2-shot printing
I asked them what would be the prices be for 5 keycaps/person, where those keycaps would be the 5 well known SC keys : move, stop, hold, patrol, attack. It would be made to replace QWERT keys.
It turns out it has a base cost of 25$ for the creation of the mold (125$ total), then : 25 groups of people (125 total keys) $1.24 / key 50 groups of people (250 total keys) $0.85 / key 100 groups of people (500 total keys) $0.65 / key 200 groups of people (1000 total keys) $0.56 / each
Mold included, this makes for the following prices per person (shipping not included) : 11.2$ for a 25 people group 6.75$ for a 50 people group 4.5$ for a 100 people group 3.425$ for a 200 people group
You can see this gets VERY cheap once we reach large amounts of keys.
So, first, a little poll :
Poll: Would you be interested in custom MX caps ?Yes (99) 78% No, I have no mechanical keyboard (18) 14% No, I'm not interested (10) 8% 127 total votes Your vote: Would you be interested in custom MX caps ? (Vote): Yes (Vote): No, I have no mechanical keyboard (Vote): No, I'm not interested
The keys would be made with a DCS form factor, given it's one of the most standard (it is on the Majestouch). I'm trying to find if it fits the blackwidow well, but I think it should (more information : http://www.keycapsdirect.com/key-caps.php )
So, the last thing : I was wondering, if enough people are interested, how we could handle this. The constructor is based in the USA, on the west coast (Seattle, Washington), very far from Europe (where I am), and I don't see me commanding keys from the US to send them back to people who bought them. Do you think we could make them see this topic and try to have them sell those keys like they do with http://pimpmykeyboard.com/ (it's a branch of keycapsdirect) ?
Thank you very much for your time.

Will the ones that fit your filco fit my DAS aswell?
If so I'm super interested in a key cap set, it might be sick to have like all the numbers on the top something different. I think that just about anything will be better than what das offers right now for RTS players, they just have the traditional wasd keys with the red enter key. :/
|
Well, if we were to do even more keys (ctrl group like keys for 1-5), the price would drop even more ! But we should see if people are interested. I think move/stop/hold/patrol/attack is a good start ^^
And for your DAS, yes, it would suit it perfectly

With 11 «yes» votes, could anyone answer the questions I asked at the end ? XD

The idea is nice. Is this just to pimp the look of your keyboard, or do you want the keys to have functionality as well? By that I mean replacing the keys that are bound to Stop, Patrol, etc with these keys. In that case you could run into trouble with custom keybindings etc.

This is an awesome idea. I don't have a mechanical keyboard tho I think those 5 buttons are a great start. And very stylish.

It's an awesome idea, and very doable!
Overclock.net had their own keycaps made, and it went over pretty smoothly.
I have alps switches, but I'd certainly get a new board for these
Hope this turns out well.

A certain website ordered these keys from that site: They came out quite well.

The race icons are also quite cool, they'd be awesome instead of print/scroll/pause !
Do you have the link to the topic related to this order to this how they organised this ?

Trust me on this - you don't want to go through that thread.

I've always wanted an 'Any Key'.

Blackwidow keycaps have the same sculptured style as DCS and Filco keycaps, though I don't have an exact height comparison.
You're not going to get Signature to setup a website to sell them - it wouldn't be worth it for the given numbers and Signature Plastics hasn't shown much of an interest in doing anything like that in the past. The PimpMyKeyboard site is already a bit of a mess. You would need to arrange for a person (you or someone else) to accept payment and a person to get the keycaps and mail them out.

The race icons are part of a much larger keycap buy on another forum, it wouldn't be a very useful example to follow unless you're going with much more than one set of keycaps. And it's a bit messy of a thread even then.

Wow this is really awesome! I've been meaning to replace my keys and I can't think of a better way to do so
|
we already did that on geekhack im trying to get a team liquid keycap order going on there
|
Great ! The sole problem still existing is that I'm living at the opposite of the globe from Signature Plastic, and that I think the main person interested would be American, as it is very hard to buy a Mechanical keyboard in Europe (at least in France :/).
Would anybody like to help me organizing that by receiving the keycaps then resending it ? Could somebody point me to US Post costs ?
|
Sounds like a pain in the ass to mail all those out unless the company does it. Any idea if these fit on the Zowie Celeritas? People talk about their cherry switches and this or that, but I just bought the first mechanical keyboard that looked cool and have no idea regarding the technical side of things.

We should sign a petition or something for the company to start selling them, I would pay good money for a protoss keycap set !
