Hello and welcome to The Tavern! Our community is growing and expanding, and it’s time we gave it more room to breathe on LiquidDota.
Looking at our Dota 2 General forum, there are two types of threads: professional news and commentary threads, and more general threads that cover personal interactions with Dota, such as Good Moments in Dota, 6.82 Speculation, and Silly Dota Videos. In order to help our growing community, we are separating these threads so they each have their own home instead of being mixed in together. From now on, Dota 2 General will focus on the professional scene, while a second and new forum will be dedicated to more community centered discussions. This new forum will be called The Tavern.
The Tavern will be a place for our community to discuss playing Dota and experiences with it, as well as more general community-focused discussion. To give you an idea of what to expect, it will house some of the chitchat that used to be found in the General Discussion thread. You may use it to talk about the game and share your love of Dota with videos or experiences, or use it purely to interact with other LiquidDota users with birthday and other similar threads, similar to the TeamLiquid Community forum.
Right now The Tavern mostly consists of large threads that have existed for months, but don’t let that deter you from posting new and smaller threads. Not every effort needs to be a year-long megathread of games and resources; you can post about something amusing that happened to you or something you saw while waiting for your friends to finish their games. Remember, the dividing line will be set along the professional scene - anything that directly relates to leagues, circuits, and players involved in those will go in Dota 2 General while more general Dota talk, and noon-Dota talk, will have its new home in the LiquidDota Tavern.
So sit back, relax, and grab a drink at The Tavern.

Congratulations you found a tiny point of overlap between every forum and Reddit that always exists regardless of how the forum operates and made a totally ridiculously sounding comparison off the back of it.

If I understand correctly this is a place to talk about personal games and other dota related stuff, whereas the other forum is for discussing things involving "official" dota. Not sure how you get reddit out of this, that comparison is pretty stupid.

I'm pretty neutral on it to be honest.
I can understand where people are coming from if they feel that it's too Hearthstone-ish though.

Actually although I have no objections at all to "The Tavern" it really, really ought to be called "The Trench" now that somebody has suggested it. X-D

I never realized until now that that tavern has 2 giant stills basically injecting booze into it.
I will say that the "Dota 2 General: General" subsection is currently literally just a mashup of the community news and featured news sections (outside of leloup's stream thread what a hero). Which seems a bit... pointless.
I think is shows how seriously the community takes itself(aka, not at all) and promotes the idea that everyone is in the trench, no matter how good you are. That the struggle is real.

Woah, sorry! I was just kidding :o Should've included ./s tags, I guess!
When The Tavern was added for the first i thought i was one of the few who can never access it for the rest of my LD life since it gave the "cannot access restriction lack restriction something" to me. I kept refreshing for quite a while and i gave up.
I was seriously sad lol
welp good thing it's back "The Trench" sounds good
Hey, if you wanna solidify Liquid as that place that hearkens back to the "old games" and laments the birth of these new games and how they're totally destroying the magic that the old games were, then definitely keep it as Tavern instead of Trench.
This happens every time a new forum section is created (like when the TI4 section was created in July).
When you click the "Forum" menu from the homepage, we find The Tavern all the way at the bottom of the list when it should have much higher priority/visibility.

So Teamliquid retains their SC2 GD thread and even the sub-LoL retains their off topic GD thread, the later of which is especially hilarious given how aggressive TL's stance was on making TL.net a Starcraft centric site but insists on keeping that portion on TL for god knows why.
I digress, creating a "tavern" is understandable given how out of hand it became but creating a separate sub section is like putting a small bandaid over a bullet wound. You really want to improve the quality of discussion on the site as a whole is going to be through strict moderation which is currently absent from liquiddota.
TL.net led this example by having absolutely no tolerance for shit posting and bad user behavior, this site is not even close to adhering to those standards.

Who said we weren't going to have higher moderation standards.
You think they will work? Dota community had always a lot of banter. If you want to have non-serious topics and postings, it will be very difficult to draw a line for higher moderation standards due to the nature of Dota.
I mean if u wanna make a ferrari fanclub I think it would go in the general section not the tavern section.
Regardless, this welcome thread is distinctly NOT a GD-style thread, it's more of an announcement. Posting ferrari stats in it is exceedingly off topic.
Also the whole point of reddit is as a content-aggregation community. Trying to aggregate reddit content onto LD is really stupid.
Also posting "ferrari is one of the greatest dota players ever" is roughly equivalent to posting "the sky is blue". While ur not wrong, one questions the need for such posts.
I really disagree with the premise that new threads should be made for topics that pop up in gd threads.
with the amount of silly topics we come up with, it'd turn the entire subforum into a clusterfuck of inane topics like "lol what buttons do you use for items", "who has the best stream music", and "is warlock a good counter to splitpushing lycans" - each of which die in a max of 3 pages and stagnate themselves into oblivion.
and all this is disregarding the fact that a lot of the time dumb (amusing) discussions only happen because the aggregation of people continuously browsing that single thread. which I admit is a retarded closed loop because people only coalesce on a single thread because of the dumb discussion..
I don't know, I have always felt that LD needed an "Awesome, confusing BM" thread. Sure the QQ thread handles some of that, but nothing compared to the joy that the original thread on TL has. No one has been told to "Step on a Lego" and that might be something that tavern really needs.

For most its based on the sword, a few of them change Blade Fury. So the Relic Blade of the Kuur-Ishiminari turns it kinda green and Kantusa the Script Sword gives it like a black effect.
The exception is the Odachi I believe, which I think outright changes the effect as well as changing effects of Omnislash and Blade Dance crit and generally modifies hero animations.
Is there anyone in here who can play in US West and have at least 4k solo MMR? I'm trying to form a stack, already have 2 people. I don't even know if there's a thread where I can ask this question. If you're interested just PM me.

All right, I dug into it and the clearly the ultimate sword right now is the Dragon Sword. That thing commands respect and makes blade fury look awesome.

They have to have concept artist put it together, maybe change animations once the model is built and so on.

Fair point but its still been three months as of today since TI4 ended. That's quite a long time.

1150 every 300s or what-the-fuck-ever and u have to get into melee range is a lot worse than 275*5 every 2 mins or w/e from wherever. and thats level 1 ult, ignoring chain lightning and bolt spam

I think the abuse accounted for hero damage and KDA and the win/loss didn't matter.
I suppose Zeus is pretty in the end, but Techies feels also relatively good with using mines to farm LHs, multiply your kills without being in immediate danger and expand on hero dmg.
They were ambiguous in the patch notes, but I think they basically tweaked the calibration algorithm to not take hero damage into account as much (or at all)
I think you missed the boat for finding your unranked mmr. iirc when ranked first came out there was a console command that showed your mmr that everyone was using during calibration
The Zeus abuse is assumed to have been fixed in a small update like 2 weeks ago. They didn't say exactly what was fixed though. Need confirmation from Zeus pickers who are now calibrating to 3k instead of 5k

Disney rule 34 scares me more than almost anything else I run into in the seedier parts of the internet. At least most blatant teen/ loli rule 34 is defended by people who just pass it off as "not real" or some shit, but Disney rule 34 is always defended by people saying that the age is ambiguous and they might be 18.

Yes and No.
Main protagonist is always American and people attribute it to Culture Industry Theory (Antagonists are usually with the foreign accent, you can start having conspiracy theories now).
All characters, of any ethnic group or origin, are American-voiced for all animation films (off-hand statement)

Age of Consent is 16 in the Caribbean (15-16)
The cartoon was made by north-americans and voiced by them originally. That doesn't represent the setting at all. The NA never had the castles and monarchy that Disney Cartoons often represent. Anime has stories that don't take place in japan and yet everyone is talking perfect japanese. The voices and even language of the characters don't at all represent where the characters are from in cartoons.
The setting for the little mermaid is more than likely a northern europe country considering who the author of the story originally is.

Caribbean is central America.

Considering they incorporate many accent for a variety of side-characters, I think we should account for it. Even if we don't, the way the company portrays Northern regions is not in line with how The Little Mermaid is portraying their settings. Flounder is named Flounder, but is obviously a more exotic, bright-coloured fish.
We can just say Denmark and forget everything, but I would definitely say this is Caribbean before I would say North Europe.

Not like Disney world follows real world history. There are a lot of made up countries with made up names as well, not a huge stretch to say there was a monarchy in the Carribean. There was one in Brazil around that time.
Firstly: @Plansix and Tort - no her hair wouldn't be full of algae and stuff; and you don't really start to smell bad from the sea. Its salt water, not a stagnant pond. You don't get particularly "gross" from sea water. I spent a month and a half scuba diving at a research post on a little island with no proper water supply which meant hardly anyone got a proper wash to get rid of the salt water and many people just gave up trying (diving twice a day made it almost pointless to keep cleaning it off) so I have first hand experience.
When will we get a Silencer that is viable in competitive play and not a complete mess? The innate skill has absolutely no business existing in the game when most other heroes have only 4 'staple' abilities.
what? like most heroes, he is viable and pretty strong in certain lineups and playstyle. Double aghs global silence can win you the game even if silencer is in the fountain
my 2 cents: a.) Some love for Belle from Beauty and the Beast please? Stockholm syndrom + bestiality + french girl. b.) Guys. Silencer is the shit lategame. I mean, 40+ stolen Int? Mass magic damage.
Silence is goddamn amazing and has been for a long while now. When I first started playing about two years ago now he was one of my "guaranteed win" picks.
He tends to absolutely wreck anyone who doesn't have super cheap, spammable spells (i.e. almost everyone early on) and as the Int stolen builds up the damage output just becomes mental.
Silencer has that weird feeling in game that when you use him, he never feels as effective as he could be. But when other people us him against you, he is the most horrible thing every created and a blight on humanity. And he is such a bully in lane.

Axe-actly. Whenever someone played against me it is like his mana never even drops a bit while I eat all tangoes without any mana. Whenever I play silencer, I feel like I never do the same thing
I've been deep into Ogre Magi lately and that hero never really gets hold. He is my go to if I just want to fuck mid lane or my carry is someone like PA who can go ham at like level 2. I like him almost as much as Earth Shaker.

I think its right actually because "The Tavern" is the full proper name for the part of the forum. Its not descriptor, its part of the name.
Like pub names. "The Hope and Anchor" (random example from in town in Liverpool).
"I mean if you don't to give me full control of this creature I made with my ballsacks, penis and a raging erection, then fuck you, I'm not making another taxpayer. "

I think it helps to be honest. It means if you really want to play a particular hero then there's less chance of: 1. It being picked instantly before you can. Or 2. Your entire team picking heroes with the same role at the same time.
At least its made Ranked a lot more playable for me.

Possibly? If it was originally your purchased rapier and they actually didn't touch it, then yes. If it was someone else's purchased rapier or if the enemy picked it up even for a fraction of a second, then no.

Ok, so quick rundown: - TA bought rapier - TA dies, Sniper picks it up - I kill sniper and take rapier, but die from Veno dots - Ursa picks it up and has +300dmg
Basically the way rapier works is, when the original owner drops it, the rapier is muted. IF an ally picks it up, it remains muted and belongs to the original owner. However, in this case, the enemy sniper picked it up, which permanently changes it to a "free rapier", that can be used by anyone and cannot be dropped. Even if the original owner picks it back up again, it will remain a free rapier.
Ah ok. I didnt know there is "free rapier" system. I thought that its always muted for the team that drops it except for the one who had it captured from the enemy.
Basically BTS has full rights of coverage so joinDOTA can have non of that?
In other news, JigSawMeander is the funniest thing in dota that Ive seen in a while. Shame the muted vods make it so that we cant highlight it to share.

God I suck at Dota.
Rapiers are pretty uncommon in games, and the 'original' and 'free' system isn't particularly simple, so it's pretty reasonable not to know about that.

I don't get why they don't, like, hire more casters. I've seen BTS triple booked before; hell, I feel like I've seen them quadruple booked before, but they have enough people that they can manage it. As far as casters go, jD is just Tobi and Cap.

Yeah I dunno what's wrong with just saying jD won't be covering i-league. That #Sorry sounds like one of those insincere sarcastic sorries. Then again Tobi was never good with PR, hard to say if it's a passive aggressive tweet.

I dont see the big deal at all.
Yeah, they did. And they even said that it's really shitty from jD, because according to them BTS doesn't do exclusive coverage deals.
Which is the whole reason people see this as "drama-mongering" because jD literally never even bid on coverage but are accusing BTS of signing an "exclusive rights" deal, when really the rights are only "exclusive" because only one studio asked for them.

That was unranked MMR. Although at the start ranked would have been somewhat close. But it's changed since then with inflation/more players/ people getting better.
I don't quite believe there is an inflation you have to remember in games with people that abandon there's a reduction in overall MMR in the pool. Because only 4 people gain MMR while 6 people lose it.
On November 02 2014 01:38 trinxified wrote: Why inflation?
5 people always gain MMR, while the other 5 lose it. Always cancels out. Unless you're playing against players who haven't got calibrated yet.
Not to mention the abandons, where less people gain MMR over the ones who lose MMR.
Smurf accounts, new accounts.
They have the level requirement to limit the mmr impact from people being incorrectly ranked when they enter ranked. Remember the patches where you could calibrate at 6k and people sold those accounts? MMR inflation since you gained that rank in unranked and then lost 3k mmr in the next 300 games. Thus you just added 3k to the total pool before stabilising.
Yeah but that doesn't factor in the many people that place below the average MMR or the MMR lost with abandons. I don't believe there is an inflation, not that any of us can prove it Only valve would know that.
People getting better, more people playing, etc. don't lead to inflation. That just means that if 4300 is 1%, that 1% will be objectivelly better or a bigger amount of people. Games often have stuff that leads to inflation, but it's hard to say if, by what and by how much the MMR in Dota is really affected by it.
Hey guys, not sure where I should post this, but I was wondering if anyone could post a few tips on maintaining the creep equilibrium as a carry, esp. if I have a shit support who keeps pushing the lane out. Any answers would be much appreciated!
If your support keeps pushing the lane you're kinda fucked unless you can get someone to pull. If not you just gotta deny when ever possible and only hit creeps for the last hit.

MMR inflation always happens to the top most players. Chess has a huge problem with this, because the majority of the time the best players win their matches due to lack of opponents that can beat them. Its been a problem for years, since the title of "Master" in chess is based on a fixed value.
Dota would have a similar problem, but would likely be less so due to the match making system and the fact there are 5 players. But inflation is still going to happen due to the top players having a tough time getting opponents at their skill level.

That's not technically inflation (which would be defined as a global flat increase in MMR) but rather an increase in the skew of the mmr distribution.

I don't fully understand the issue within chess, but an friend of mine is near master level and he said that everyone ELO in chess is slowly rising. It is likely not one issue that is causing it to rise, but a confluence of issues. It might just been the nature of any competitive rating system to have inflation in some way. Its not a huge deal as long as people are aware of it.
Inflation would only happen if more points are introduced to the pool compared to the amount of active players, but dota has something chess doesn't, a situation where there is lost more MMR than is gained. When someone abandons.
Which is why i don't personally believe there is a real inflation(and if there is, it's so miniscule it wont really be measurable), but again only valve knows this. I'd love to know the answer though.
Sorry, I couldn't tell, I assumed you were, my bad. I am not sure if there is MMR inflation over all. Sure people could game the system and get like 7K, but that would level itself out.
Inflation in dota is mostly going to come from the smurf detection, imo.
In an actual zero-sum system (which dota has never really pretended to be), every player is started at the same point and climbs by taking points off other players. Dota's system, on the other hand, injects point whenever it boosts a new account, because the points that get a smurf to VH in four games do not come from the people in those games. Even though this happens before the account has a ranked MMR, the ranked MMR is created from that pool and is stll affected.
In the most obvious example, if a 5k+ player makes a smurf and boosts it to 5k-level by stomping his first dozen games, he creates around 3k "new" MMR. If he then hands the account to a 2k player who tanks it back down, that MMR is fed to the people the account loses to, which could conceivably cause inflation.
This doesn't work both ways because there is no corresponding catastrophic loss of MMR if a new account loses repeatedly - at worst, a tanked new account would drop around 1k while a boosted one can gain 3k+. Of course, there are opposing factors like the fact that abandoned winning games cause a net loss in MMR. I'm not sure that's a significant portion of games, but I could be wrong.
On the whole, I'm not convinced that there is significant inflation, but the mechanisms certainly exist. The easiest way to detect it would probably be to watch the cutoffs for High and Very High. Those seem to be percentile based, so if we saw the entrypoint to VH rising then that would be evidence for significant inflation. I don't think that's been observed yet.

Guys, does it get any better? I'm currently at 2.2k MMR and while I'm terrible, the people I get put up with sometimes is ridiculous... it's as if they opened DOTA for the first time ever, and then they end up being lvl 122...

No. People suck at all levels of the game. I mean, at higher MMR they might be mechanically better, but you're still gonna run into plenty of idiots/assholes/feeders/dodgers/(whatever ethnicity you don't like).
If you don't like it...look for people you do like to stack with, I guess?
Weird my level XX present (The one where u can open every 5 levels gained) disappeared after opening. I do hope its dota2 severs lagging and I will get a new one soon =/

On November 19 2014 02:13 trinxified wrote: Yo how do we earn items now? I just leveled up but didn't get any... I don't understand the new system
The new system is not difficult to understand. Let me break it down for you.
Before, there are two ways to get items a) random time-based chance to drop an item at the end of a game (the time is cumulative between games, so playing one 60-minute game is the same as playing two 30-minute games) b) a guaranteed drop when you level up
These two were independent of each other - you could get two item drops in the same game.
What they have done now is, they have removed the guaranteed level up drop, so now you only have the random chance-based drop. They also lowered the chances of getting such a drop, but also improved the quality of the drops.
I have a feeling they'll increase the drop rate a little - people are definitely getting drops though, there's a reddit post where someone got the new PA arcana

day 92 : still no drop here and my steam wallet is hungry for money
The assumption that drops are sets or hightier items is not true. My only drop until now i got a "package" of two common items for the same antimage set.

Many teams are pretty busy with Dreamleague, Summit and some other online leagues, so hopefully whatever the organizers are doing won't screw up the qualifiers completely.
Well I was asking about the new drop system because I've played so many hours/games already without one... Do you only get full sets now instead of individual items?
For my own part i only saw set droping , but govie apparently had a partial set presented as a bundle

I can't wait to see what my first drop will be (for sure a set i allrdy have !)
Would The Tavern be a proper place to post if you're looking for additional members for a team? I have a hard time seeing any other section of the forum suited for this. Then again, perhaps we're not supposed to be posting stuff like that on TL.net at all.
