Learning any hero once you learn how to have good map awareness, warding, last hitting, ganking, pushing etc is easy. I think you're doing it the wrong way around if you start with IH though. Matchmaking is the best way to learn the basics really.

Of course, that's assuming you have a reliable drafter who knows how to construct a team with some cohesion and that can also take on your opponents on equal footing (at least) . The heroes that are selected are ones that you should definitely learn if you want to have continued success in Dota. You should also become familiar with the heroes that are commonly banned. Really though, take the time to learn every hero. If something you can't play is drafted in an inhouse, then dedicate that game to learning about it to the best of your abilities. Ask your teammates for help and don't be sour (I haven't encountered this yet) because you can't play it. And if your captain bitches at you for not being able to play a hero he drafted, then he's also to blame for not explaining what role the hero should have played in the team. --- I could go on forever about these inhouses, but if there's just one thing I want to get across in all my posts, it's that these are more of a casual learning experience than anything. It's nice that we can mimic the pros occasionally, but that more than often won't be the case considering the player pool available to us. Don't take the games to seriously, please. Problem is that most players don't want to explain how to play. Like this last game where I played Venge and our lane top got destroyed. I fed like 4 times early on and all I really got was an annoyed "Don't go there". That isn't really telling me what I should be doing. Of course, I don't expect people to be my personal teachers, but it would be sweet with a quick comment now and again, something like "They are doing X and you already failed at Y, so go do Z", something I can take away from the game and not do the same mistake next time. For this game, i didn't really feel like I learned anything more than "If you die once as venge in a lane, stay below tower and do nothing", which is obviously not the right thing to do either. I felt like I did slightly better later in the game, but it was already lost at that point.

It makes for fucking terrible games when you have a drafter who doesn't know what he's doing. Just say if you're not comfortable/have little experience with drafting, and don't ask if someone else WANTS to draft, say that you CANNOT draft. I don't like drafting, and I'd like to not do it if I can help it, but it's something that I actually know how to do and how it works, so if no one else on the team feels like they can draft, I'll do it. I'm just going to quote this every time this happens. If you can't draft, don't fucking do it.

Admit its your absolutely first dota game, tell me you have no fucking clue what your doing and I will gladly tell you what to buy, where to ward, what heroes to look out for, etc. So please, don't wait for someone to ask how good or new you are. No one will help you if they don't lnow you need it. Yeah, I have started saying right at the start of the draft that I'm inexperienced and will welcome suggestions. Nobody has given me any problems and some people have been pretty helpful. So far so good!

Props to Hyper for the Mirana pick in the trilane. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

Then tell you to fuck off when you give me advice in a very angry manner. That wouldn't be DotA at all.

As for me, I only ask around if people can play a certain hero if I want to pick something a bit more special. We're all here to learn, so best thing if you get to play a hero you are not "good" with, is to ask your teammates for skill- and itembuilds, positioning on the lane, role on clashes etc. That, or you make me play the weird shit. Too much emphasis is put on picks anyway. 99% of the time it's execution and play that matters more.
