Your case, PSU and mobo should allow for a newer GPU to be slotted in AFAIK. Most GPU performance gains come from performance per watt improvements so cards that use the same amount of power as a 6850 (or even less) can perform miles better nowadays

The main concern would be if your CPU could run the games that you want to play at high enough framerates

So is something like the R9 285 or 380 too much compared to the processor? I know the processor is old but every time I look at the requirements for a new game I want to play I am limited by the GPU, not the processor. Is it not realistic to make this (already overclocked) chip last another 5ish years playing newer games on med-low settings? I don't care so much about high graphics settings, but when the game lags on the lowest settings it makes dark souls bosses too hard.

I'm having a hard time finding older cards that aren't used. I've never bought used hardware before, is it considered too risky? I'd prefer to buy new but since it is going into an old computer already maybe used is the better option?

It depends a lot on the game, some are fine and others run badly on a phenom II. You'll have a hard time making any CPU last 12 years but it may be fine for a while still. If not then you're looking at a full platform change to am4 or 1151(?) which would mean new CPU, mobo and RAM and be a lot more expensive.

I'm having a hard time finding older cards that aren't used

That's because they're not produced any more, there's no point when newer cards are just flat out better and still work in older systems. You could use an rx470 instead of a 285 or a 380 for example.

A lot of people buy used gpu's for price/perf but i'm not a fan of it because they break a lot more than some other components so having a decent warranty with a reputable brand carries a lot of value and a couple gens old card won't have that any more. If they're really strong price/perf and you're willing to risk the money then sure.

I am looking to spend around $200 (in the US). This is not necessarily time sensitive, I could wait till better deals this summer or later.

What is your current build?
AMD Phenom II x6 1055T overclocked to 3.5GHz + cooler (CPU-Z says it is a 1050T but I don't think those exist?)
Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H motherboard
Radeon HD 6850
20GB DDR3 ram + 1TB hard drive
my moniter is running in 1360x768 currently - ASUS VK222H Black 22" 2 ms (GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor - Maximum Resolution 1680 x 1050
Running Windows 7 x64

I have an old mid size Antec 300 case, the current GPU fits with not much room to spare. I would estimate there is 8.5in x 6in of space maximum without serious changes.
My PSU (SeaSonic M12II 520 Bronze EVO Edition 520W) is connected to my GPU with a 6 pin (2x3) cable and there are only some 5 pin (5x1) connections unused on the PSU. Is this another issue I will run into looking to upgrade?
Are there any more complications I need to look into like the connections between the board and the graphics card? Thanks for any help.

Ok the rx 470/480 looks to be in my price range and as far as I can tell most are compatible with what I have even if the spacing will be tight. One last question, how do I tell the different models apart? The 470 looks to be a tad cheaper than the 480 and a tad worse, but there are half a dozen or more companies that make them? Gathered from a bunch of reviews of 480s people seems to like the saphire, asus strix, and the MSI but people are all over the place on what they like. How do you sort through all of them to find the proper one, or should I just find the best deal I can out of the highest recommended ones?

Thanks for all your help.

edit: This was directed at Cyro but I guess the same question to you November, do you like the MSI better than the other models? I can't figure out the difference since reviews and comparisions online are so varied.

There are reference models (designed by AMD) and others with custom pcb's and/or coolers by a range of different companies. They'll have different warranties, too. For these tier of cards you can generally buy for price/performance but it's worth taking note that some coolers will perform better (lower temperatures, less noise) than others, reviews will show that

I've never had a MSI GFX card, but I basically echo what Cyro said, each card has it's own oddities(coolers, designs, etc) it's all about reading the reviews.

This post kind of makes me feel silly because I just pulled the trigger on some parts for a new build, and I'm going to end up spending well over 1k when I didn't really want to, and I'm upgrading from something better than you are (same Cpu though!).

Have only a couple questions I'm going to post a little later since I've already made the decision on most of it unfortunately

What is your budget?
about $1000. This is not a hard limit.

What is your monitor's native resolution?
2160p (I'll be using my TV as the monitor).

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
Any new AAA games. It doesn't need to be at high settings or 60 fps.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Watching movies, general web browsing.

Do you intend to overclock?
Yes, if it is in the budget and will help performance.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No.

Do you need an operating system?
Yes.

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
I need a wireless keyboard+mouse, which should be part of the budget.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
I'd like to place this computer in the entertainment stand under my TV, so it can't be very tall (I have about 12 inches of vertical space). I would prefer only an SSD for storage (it doesn't need to be very large, either 256 or 512GB should be fine). If going with the smaller SSD will allow for a better graphics card, then I'll go with the smaller one.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
USA

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
None.

I am having trouble installing the Graphics card that was recommended a few days ago. Could someone have a look at my build to see if there is something incompatible (I couldn't find specific discussion online for my gpu/mobo combination). I don't know whether it is worth opening a separate post topic for this. If this is better posted somewhere else please let me know.

I don't get anything to show up on the monitor with the new graphics card in. With no graphics card I can boot up using the onboard graphics just fine. I am trying to decide if the new card is just defective or if I have another issue.

The new graphics card is:
XFX RADEON RX 470 4GB RX-470P4LFB6 DDR5

And the rest:
Kingston Digital 240GB SSDNow V300 SATA 3 2.5

You need to plug your screen into the display outputs on the new graphics card, it's a different slot on the back of the PC case. If you don't do that then the GPU will take over but have no screens connected so you won't see anything

By this you just mean plugging the DVI cable to the slot in the pack of the graphics card instead of the one on the motherboard? I am encountering the blank screen with the DVI plugged into the graphics card.

Okay, hmm.. do you have the power connector plugged into it?

Pretty simple issues but very common

How certain are you that everything fits into that case? I think that the graphics card my be too big for such a small case.

case clearance for gpu: 350mm
gpu length: 279mm

I owned the case actually, and clearance for everything is pretty good. The case is bigger than you think.
TBH it's not the most fun to work with though, the psu mount can be a bit weird.

I figured it out, finally. I upgraded the BIOS and everything started working. I didn't realize that would be important.

So I'm trashing my old Phenom X6 1055T after the mobo and video card failed.
I've already chosen most of my parts but essentially I'm trying now to decide mainly on CPU.

I'm debating between i5 7600 and i7 7700. When I used to stream I did with a Radeon 5750, 720p at 30 FPS. Also couldn't stream anything more graphics intensive than a rock. (But srsly I could do LoL or something like Binding of Isaac without toooo many issues.) What I'd like to be doing now is 1080p at 60 FPS while streaming if at all possible. Stuff like Overwatch maybe, or Dark Souls 3 in the future. I won't be needing 120 FPS for competitive shooters or anything like that. I know that theoretically the i7 will always be better for this sort of thing but what I'm wondering is, practically/for my purposes is there a point in paying the extra money for the i7 vs the i5? (I'm trying to save money on an already fairly expensive build where I can)

Any advice at all about what mistakes I'm making or what I'm doing horribly wrong is more than welcome.
Here's the full build (minus MOBO and CPU). I know I'm omitting some of the more detailed names/specs on the parts but hopefully it's enough to get the point across without having to look the whole thing up while I'm at work

MSI Radeon RX 480 8G
Mushkin 2x8G RAM
ADATA SSD 250GB
Corsair 650W power supply
Case --- I'm reusing my old one. It's monstrous and will fit absolutely anything, I already know that. Some Cooler Master monstrosity.

(Potential MOBO:
Asrock H270 Pro 4)

You'd probably see the 7700 giving significant benefit (more fps in some games, easier to stream higher resolution&FPS combos) but losing price/performance

With the Corsair Power supply, be careful. They have two lines, one of which is apparently very good (RMX, RMi), while the other (VS) is pretty meh.
