Hey guys,

Been using Obs the last few days in place of xSplit (my licence will expire soon).

i can't seem to get a very clear and neat stream, here's my conf :

- 12 GB DDR3 PC12800 (1 600 Mhz)
- i7 980X - 3.5Ghz (first 6cores)
- Radeon HD5870 - 1024Mb GDDR5.
- I have a SSD for the system, but SC2 is on a standard 1TO SATA3 disk.

Here's the speedtest from my home :

You can see some of my later streams here : http://www.twitch.tv/growiel . As you can see, the stream is good, but doesn't look HD while i'm streaming 720p.

Oh, my native resolution on my 26" main monitor is 1920*1200 .

What settings would you recommend ?
Keep in my mind that I am NOT a partner, so while I can send 50Mb of bitrate no problems, almost no people would be able to handle it and see my stream correctly.

Thanks in advance.

What standards are you referring to when you say it doesnt "look" HD? HD is pretty much defined as 1280x720 which you are manually setting.

If you are trying to fullscreen the video or view it in a larger window than 1280x720 (upscaling) then it will probably look awful regardless of its quality.

Try using www.twitch.tv/yourchannel/new, that gives you a stream window a little bigger than 1280x720 when you view on 1920x1080 (as opposed to the 2.25x upscale required to fullscreen it)

You should be using the max quality setting available, im not sure if you can override ratecontrol in OBS (xsplit limits you to crf25 which is pretty awful unless you use command line)

use somewhere around 3-3.5k bitrate and buffer for streaming at 1280x720/1920x1080 and id strongly suggest running the game in 1920x1080 (with screen/video drivers set up for black bars at top and bottom) so you can capture the game in the same aspect ratio you are streaming at (16 : 9 is FAR more common than 16 : 10 in monitors these days) and also because of the way that SC2 scales the game window. You see more area with a more "zoomed out" view at a 16 : 9 resolution compared to 16:10, which cuts some off the sides of your viewport.

For bad looking stream:

- Wrong aspect ratio

- Bad ratecontrol setting limiting bitrate

- Upscaling video somewhere

- Too low bitrate

etcetc.

Thanks.

What I mean by "doesn't look HD" is that when I watch it, i don't feel the "wow this is HD !" that I usually do when watching 720p (or 1080p+ streams). It's not sharp and the colors aren't crisp.

I really don't want to run the game in 1920*1080, I want it to use my whole screen. Even if I know that 16 is better for SC2.

My current settings are :

- Quality 10
- 2500 bitrate / 5k buffer (read somewhere that it must be double, but seems that you guys are saying it should be the same)
- Base resolution : 1920*1200
- Dowscale 1.5 (1280 * 800)
- 45fps
- Multithread on, normal priority
- Preset veryfast
- Use send buffer is on and at 8196

I'll try with 3k bitrate and buffer, but i don't see somewhere to change the ratecontrol though (maybe in the "Custom x264 encoder settings" in Advanced ?). What about FPS ? Is 45 good ? Should I aim for 60 ?

What if I stream at my natice resolution (1920 * 1200) ? How will Twitch handle that ? And what are the performance impact ? Do I just need more bitrate or the CPU is also going to cry more ?

I'm trying to start using OBS with Dxtory but I can't get it to work. I get the incompatible hook module error even though I have OBS on Dxtory's ignore list and i've rebooted, redone it, etc 5000 times. Any one else had this issue?

That's quality balance , 10 is not the best quality balance I would pick, try 6-7-8, don't be fooled by "bigger = better"
everything else is okaish (try to have sendbuffer disabled, you might not even need it, also up your bitrate since you are capturing at 45fps)

2500 bitrate should be fine for streaming 45 fps.

Also I have noticed that twitch servers have been balking whenever I attempt to stream at anything higher than around 2400 anyway. Stream viewers are complaining of dropped frames and sure enough, lots of frames are being dropped. My internet is very capable and when I lower the rate the dropped frames go away.

Sometimes I wish there was a way to test servers bandwidth, rather than just its latency which is not quite as useful.

Hi guys,

Im having a few problems with my streaming... and i dont know where is the problem.

Well, i have a 100/10 mbs cable connection, here is my test.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2385040862.png

Im trying to stream in 720p and here are my config.

Encoder screen -> http://i.imgur.com/yscgS.jpg
Video screen -> http://i.imgur.com/J7FKX.jpg
Advanced screen -> http://i.imgur.com/6lzvo.jpg

I have put a source [Add game capture(experimental)] where the game is cs:go.

Game resolution -> 1280x720
Desktop resolution -> 1920x1080

My video on demand can see correctly with few lags around 10-15 minutes but people tells me that they cant see my stream cause they have so much lags... where is the problem? :\

My computer is:

i7 2600K 3,4 GHz without overclock
Asus p8p67 motherboard
ATI Radeon 5800 series

Turn the buffer down and see what happens, it could be the twitch servers like what medrea is talking about, but 6000 buffer is a little excessive.

Nah, there isnt a problem with buffer cause i have proved so much configs for the buffer and bitrate like...

bitrate-buffer
3000-3000
3000-4500
3000-6000
2500-2500
2500-4000

etc...

It wont look sharp if you are upscaling, 1.5 downscale means 2.25x upscale to fill your screen.

60fps is extremely easy with your setup and the bitrate you set isnt realted to CPU load

Something like 80% of your viewers will be viewing in 16 : 9, you can stream at 1920x1200 but it wont look too good for them. With a lower resolution you view like this [image loading]
but resolution higher than you can display doesnt work out very well

Personally id just set to 1920x1080, either run with black bars or stretch to screen and stream at 1920x1080@60fps@veryfast@3.5k/3.5k

Any ideas on what would cause me to be unable to stream later in the day? I was testing my stream earlier (around noon EST) and everything worked fine. Now it will freeze every ~5 seconds, regardless of settings.

Computer:
i7 920 @ 3.8GHz
12GB ram
HD 6970
1920x1080
Net: 25mb/5mb

Settings:
720p/60fps
Quality: 10
Bit/Buffer: 3000/3000
Preset: veryfast

Absolutely nothing has changed between the tests. I checked the server and the ping/jitter is almost identical between test, though I've tried others anyway. I've tried dropping the settings extremely low and it still freezes every ~5 seconds.

Try with other servers, use www.speedtest.net and www.pingtest.net to keep tabs on connection speed

I've tried multiple servers, using R1CH's JTVPing to see which should be better, all with the same results of constant freezes. My connection shows the same as it was earlier, too.

Edit: It's definitely a Twitch problem at later hours. I tried own3d at the same settings and it worked much better, only problem being that I don't really like own3d.

just started testing a dual pc stream setup with OBS and a new capture card (avermedia live gamer HD) but I can't get the audio to pass through hdmi via the avermedia capture card as a capture device. Xsplit handles this no problem when i set my stereo mix to "listen" and playback through the capture card via HDMI but doesn't look like OBS video capture device option picks up any audio, only video even though its connected through HDMI. Any ideas? I've been liking OBS quality and free is always nice!
