I have been pretty unhappy about the framerate I've gotten in SC2 for some time now, so I finally decided it was time to try out overclocking. This is because all test sites on the internet is telling me that I should be able to max the settings on the game and still have a reasonable 40-ish FPS. My drivers are up to date.

First I tried to clock my gfx card (GTX 560) and it didn't really make any difference, so I'm guessing it has to do with my processor

1. I can't find a program to clock with, do I HAVE to do it from BIOS or is there any programs my google searches didn't find?

2. Is my expectations unreasonable? (will post DxDiag below so you can judge it)

3. What is the highest clock settings I can set it too?

4. Will it make a difference?

Looks like the system is from MSI? Even if it lets you overclock (check the BIOS), you shouldn't.

This can happen to anything, but low-end and middling MSI motherboards from this time period were infamous for having the CPU power circuitry fail when overclocking (burn marks, occasionally fires), particularly with Phenom II X6 processors.

For just SC2, the power consumption shouldn't be too high, because it's not using all the cores, so it may be okay. Just be warned.

The "system model" of ms-7599 comes up as the 770-C45 I think. C4x is definitely a lower-end model by MSI's naming convention.

1. You can use AMD Overdrive if you do not want to touch the bios.

2. No comment.

3. Your proc clocked is at 2.8ghz, try to bump it slowly and carefully without touching the voltage, 3.0 or 3.2 is pretty much ok.

4. Will it makes any different? It will definitely increase just a tiny bit.

OP why are u overclocking your gfx card when Sc2 is a processor bound game. Therefore you will have to oc your proc if u want to see any noticeable difference in fps performance.

Because I often play TF2 and similar games that are not as reliant on processor.

the 770-C45 is ok to OC with multipliers. Anything else is kinda bad as it is a low budget board.

Furthermore Phenom II really are sensitive to voltage changes and you wont reach a lot more with it either before they get unusable instable.

EDIT: Forgot the most important thing. OC with a decent cooler on your CPU. The stock coolers mostly are ok for stock speeds and lack ability over stock speed

So, using AMD overdrive it goes up to x14, which is the standard 2.8MHz. And if I disable turbo core I can go up to x16.5, but when I click apply I get the warning that AMD is not responsible "yada yada yada", but then the values change back to x14.
Halp?

Also, does anyone know what the green button right next to the preferences button does?

I have decent cooling, and an almost completely open case (it has a huge "window" on the side), so cooling isn't that big of an issue.

I assume it was unstable or it was just simply AOD being stupid. Try x16 and below, if not it seems you'll need to do it via BIOS. There are some settings in BIOS must be disabled or changed : c1e, cool n quite, spread spectrum, vcore, etc and set oc in manual. If you don't do this your AOD cannot operate properly.

Let me guess, you play team games, maybe zerg, and during late-game battles you always get slowdowns? Not really much you can do, to be honest. The slowdowns shouldn't be crippling, but you can't OC enough to make a difference and can't get a better SC2 processor without replacing lots of components.

Are your expectations unreasonable? Yes. You should be able to average 40fps or so, but SC2 slows down pretty reliably with lots of units on the screen, so those online whatzits you were looking at were basically lying to you about being able to max SC2 in late team-game scenarios. An 'average' 40 fps means lots of fps early in the game when it doesn't matter and slowdowns late game.

Will overclocking the little bit you might be able to manage with your current motherboard make a difference? Probably not, so I wouldn't spend hours working on it. And see Medrea above.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but a Phenom II x6 is basically one of the worst modern processors you can get in terms of SC2 performance (it has lots of cores with relatively low per-core performance, SC2 can only use 2 cores and needs high per-core performance).

On the upside, streaming shouldn't slow you down any more than you already are if you wanted to stream .

Tbh, I wouldn't go above 3-3.2 GHz with that mobo. I would get a higher end motherboard and then get it to about 3.6 GHz if you have a good enough cooler. My 1045t is sittin' pretty at 3.6 GHz np so it can be done and considering that your cpu already has a higher multiplier than mine, I would try it.

Again I will say though, get another motherboard or you're doomed to ruin the rest of your pc by pushing your fsb too far on that motherboard.

Uhm...actually I played around a lot with this board and I didnt lose anything at all. Please dont make him shit his pants for no reason =)

The low budget board won't give you much room for changes in voltage of FSB. That's for sure.
The Phenom II on top doesnt like changes of voltage so the OCability (of this bundle) is limited anyway.

Just stick to multipliers, which will give you at best 200-400MHz more per core (which wont affect sc2 much acually).

Edit: I wouldnt recommend another mobo just to OC a bit more :F 80-100EUR for how much more performance??!!

My motherboard brand new was $59.99 USD.

Also, the reason we're trying to make him "shit his pants" and back away from overclocking with his current mobo is because he's not trying to make his e-penis bigger... he's trying to get a performance boost in sc2. Last time I checked, 3 ghz wont change much. I couldnt play sc2 on ultra before with my cpu at stock. Once I got a new mobo and overclocked it, I can play at max settings and still have 35-40 fps late game (not saying that I play on max settings) which is playable and pretty good over the 15-20 it used to get. It's also noted that I play with v-sync on.

Just stick to multipliers, which will give you at best 200-400MHz more per core (which wont affect sc2 much acually).

Edit: I wouldnt recommend another mobo just to OC a bit more :F 80-100EUR for hoch much more performance??!!

How (and why) would you do that in a tech support forum? o.O

But yeah, I have 3 weeks left of my summerjob (taking out the garbage!) and I will get enough money to buy a new motherboard (a pretty damn sick one too if I need it since I still go to school and live with my parents and don't have to pay for living etc), but thanks for the help and effort <3

A few more thoughts:
  • Phenom II X6 1055T is not a Black Edition processor. You can't just increase multiplier, right? (or am I the one with a brain fart today?) You'd need to OC through BCLK, not that doing so is such a terrible thing.
  • As everybody is mentioning, voltage changes may not be possible. Even if they were, stay far away from that.
  • You might need a better CPU cooler to overclock, but maybe not for a small OC. A better cooler would cost money and a bit of time to install. A novice could get the installation wrong.
  • With just a small OC through BCLK and no voltage adjustment (say, making it to 3.1 GHz or so), there won't be much change in performance.
  • Is that change of performance worth the trouble? It could be, but I would say not for a novice.
P.S. buying a new motherboard for the same processor is definitely not worth the money.

Then I'll probably get a i5/i7 or something like that. As I said, money isn't that big of an issue.

If you want to spend a few moneys on your pc, the biggest performance increase comes from getting a better hard drive. Solid states aren't too bad these days. No need to replace your motherboard or CPU. I have a 1090t and 6970 - and I play alot of team games without fps dropping to less than 60 ever.

Also search for "hybridic graphic setting" on tl forums, a guy has detailed an awesome guide to increase framerate without effecting graphical quality (much).

best of luck hope you don't fry anything

Haha, thank you

While SSD's are worthwhile upgrades, they wont improve his framerate. are you playing on ultra? I have a hard time believing that setup never drops below 60 fps on ultra.

you r all newbs i have a 1055t and i have underclocked and overclocked and under volted with a shit msi motherboard with 1333 ram. ppl who talk about finnicky parts r bad. especially in the case of 1055t. you can set it to 4ghz without touching voltage. u can even undervolt it and do 4 or 3.7
turn turbo off but leave cool and quiet on so u can use windows power setting manager to drop to low clock when not doing much. k10stat is essential because unless u run 3.7+ you can undervolt it snd drop temps. u r gon want a heatsink with dual 120s or single. for me, sweet spot is 1.30 volts and 3.5 ghz no turbo. turbo is faill all the pwbers turn it off
