Sorry, windows 7 ultimate 64 bit
|
Oh! How does virtual memory factor into this? Should I be raising that as well?
|
Try going into msconfig and making sure you're not memory limited.
Otherwise, everything should just be plug-and-play, without having to mess with BIOS and all of that stuff.
|
opened up msconfig but had trouble finding memory anywhere. where would i go to see if I'm limited?
|
Go to the "Boot" tab -> Advanced Options, and make sure "Maximum memory" is unchecked.
This shouldn't really affect you much, but I've seen instances that some people had this checked for some reason or another.

yeah, hmmm. i tried switching the ram sticks. So i had one of the original sticks in the first slot, same as always. then i switched the ram in slot 2 with the new ram from slot 3. I tried to start my comp but it wouldn't boot up on screen. Switched them back to normal, old ram in slots 1 & 2, and the new one in slot 3. booted fine like it did before, but still doesn't show up in the Task Manager but still does show up on system information.
All the ram is G.Skill ddr3, 1333......what gives?
Thanks for the help so far, but still no change. Appreciate it though!

Try booting up the system with just the new stick.

They are compatible.
I don't know how 1 Stick + 2 Sticks of RAM work; but just 1 Stick does work on dual channel motherboards.
Maybe someone can shed light on this.
|
I'd guess with relative certainty that the new RAM stick is bad/defective. Explains why it won't read the additional memory, also could explain why the PC won't boot properly with the new RAM stick in channel a dimm 0 slot; as some mobo firmware requires a dimm in that slot.
Download and run memtest86+ to confirm, but I'd bet that's the issue.

You can put in RAM in any order you like, just won't necessarily run in dual channel mode. And really running in dual channel mode in most cases will offer very little or no performance gain in gaming applications, so it doesn't matter much. Certain software applications can use it to good effect though.
For the memory controller to work in dual channel mode, you just need to have the same total amount of RAM in each channel.

TheToast is pretty much correct ive had gskill ram before and a couple of times and it came defective.
if i was you i just wouldn't buy anymore from them.
|
If it boots up and works fine with just the 1 stick, it's something else.
Something else I've run into before but giving a suggestion has gotten me "censored" before. So you might as well try that first (booting up with 1 stick to verify it's defective or not).
|
i tired booting up with the one stick up it never did. so yeah i guess its just defective then. but why is it that my system information reads 8GB then? If it was defective wouldn't it just not even register?

trying to install/run memtest86+ but it's not working :/

you have to make a bootable disc get the "pre compiled iso" and just burn the image http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
if you need an image burner, www.imgburn.com
also just making sure ... ! in task manager under Performance Tab there is "Physical Memory" total = your total ram
|
yeah my total is just like that, 4092 when it should be somewhere around 8. damn. i dont have any discs right now so ill have to get some tmrw. is there any other way to check now? would windows memory diagnostic work?
|
hmmm. been looking around online and i checked the Resource Monitor for my system and it shows 4105MB as Hardware Reserved. Any idea why that is or how to change it?
