"Jittery" Mouse cursor

Wasn't sure how to describe it so jittery might be off, but essentially when I move my mouse the cursor makes sort of a small zig zag movement rather than going straight. I don't really notice this when I move the mouse fast but slow and precise movement is really bad.

- It's a Logitech G9 that I've had for 5 years, drivers are up to date, made sure theres no shit stuck inside it screwing the laser.
- Windows 7
- Tried other mouse, works perfectly fine.
- Tried tweaking DPI, doesn't the remove issue but makes it slightly more tolerable.
- Not sure when it started occurring, but it really bothers me now.

Should I just assume that it's come to end of it's road and use it as an excuse to buy a new one.

My mouse does that sometimes as well (razer deathadder) but it's usually caused by some dirt on my mouse mat. So I just clean it off and it works fine after.

Not the case for me I think since it happens on all surfaces including a clean mousepad or a table and has been happening for a long time now, and I've also made sure the laser area is clean.

Happening to my 2 year old MX518. I do believe you and I are in need of an upgrade :[

Edit: Think I should add in the fact that cleaning the lens does nothing

Malfunction Speed
Another important factor in choosing a mouse is the fastest speed you can move before it gives up and decides to fire the next rocket at your feet. I call this the Malfunction Speed, where the mouse loses control and effectively stops working. When you flick your mouse beyond the Malfunction Speed, anything can happen. You may either end up looking in any random direction or just find you haven't turned around at all. All optical and laser mice must have a Malfunction Speed, so we want it to be as high as possible so you don't notice it.

All mice have a "malfunction speed," which I believe gets worse over time for one reason or the other. It might be time to just get a new one.

Can't say if thats exact cause with my tech knowledge but something along those lines seems to have been the case, it just ran out of life.

Yeah lol that's looks horrible. You could get a similar problem if there is a lot of dirt or other deformation of the rubber feet of the mouse where it can get jitter-like (caused by the change in distance between the surface). It wouldn't look that "uniform" like in your picture though.
