*ISSUE RESOLVED*

It seems that this laptop and graphics card should be able to support 1600x900 resolution, but it's not available as a choice. Even when I pick 1680x1050 (16:10), and press "Apply", it seems to accept but just puts it on 1600x1200 (4:3) anyway after saving it. It's pretty frustrating as I hoped to make full use of the native 1600x900 resolution of the screen (16).

Can anyone help me out what could be the problem? The monitor does not seem to require or have any drivers as a matter of fact.

Thanks a bunch!

Laptop specs:
MSI GT660R
Core i7-720QM
VGA nVidia GTX 285 M - 1 GB DDR3
Native resolution: 1366 x 768
Graphics drivers: latest drivers installed

Monitor: Acer S201HL bd
Size: 20" (51cm)
Native resolution: 1600x900 (16)
Monitor cabled by VGA cable to laptop

This monitor does not have HDMI access, only DVI & VGA port. Laptop only outputs HDMI & VGA so that's why I used VGA cable.

Are there Laptop-HDMI to Monitor-DVI cables? I could try that if you think that's the issue.

Hey grubb. We're talking your aspect ratio is messed up correct, are you completely positive that the graphics card is able to support the resolution. Sometimes if computer companies set the native resolution doesn't matter which card it is that supports it, it just will not look right past the suggested resolution. Anyways, I just believe it will not comply with the monitor and the way they designed the laptop, sorry chief!

Try to close your laptop then set the resolution. Change the lid settings before you do it tho.

If the driver for the monitor is loaded as anything but plug and play monitor (or whatever generic driver laptops get) try changing it. The resolution might not be on the table.

grubby - do you have the nvidia control panel installed? if not, you can download it for your particular video card off the nvidia website.

open that up, and click on "change resolution" on the left panel. should be under "display"

click "customize" on the right panel underneath the list of resolutions.

click the check box that says "enable resolutions not exposed by the display." - then "OK"

try setting your resolution again.

if this doesn't help, i'd recommend contacting nvidia :/

Hey Grubby,

you see that button "advanced settings" or so at the down half of the screen click on it then on monitor and look for the button "refresh drivers" or so. May there is the problem that the first version didnt support your new laptop. Hope this works...

Edit: i forgot to tell that you have to go on properties after you selected monitor.

Does it give u any recommendation of resulution when u plug the monitor in?
Did u set priority to ur monitor?
Can u try 1920 * 1080 out, even though ur screen may not support it?

Yes, it's installed.
There is no "Customize" button.

This only made it worse Now I can't even use 1280x800 anymore which at least before I could ..

It says Analog Display.

I am able to set 1600x1024 but 1600x900 is not even an option.

you dont have to choose res settings for new monitor use only crt button like press fn+f8 your laptop ll auto set scan ration and res for you
if you choose both your main screen doesnt support that res so you cannot set things right.

fn+f2 does the switches but it doesn't bring the monitor to any kind of correct resolution.

Im sorry that this made it worse. This works perfect normally, atleast with my laptop. Did you reboot after installing?

Hey Grubby - this is a really common problem with 20" monitors. 1600 : 900 is kind of a bizarre resolution.

Try opening up your Nvidia Control panel again. On the left hand menu, there's a dropdown called "Display" Open that up and find "Manage Custom Resolutions"

Select your monitor - hit "Create..." in the right side window thing that pops up, see if you can add in your resolution to the custom table.

Give that a shot?
SirJolt: Well maybe if you weren't so big and stupid, it wouldn't have hit you.

Well I had to re-install nVidia drivers and control panel, and we're back to the start. 1600x1024 is possible, so's 1280x800, but 1600x900 is not in the list.

Maybe it's just not supported by the GFX card or by VGA cable. If I try HDMI/DVI and it still doesn't work, then there really isnt a solution right?
