Thought I'd ask some tech gurus for help.

I'm trying to figure out if xsplit is crashing my computer or if my processor is bad.

Here's my setup:
3.0 Ghz AMD Phenom II X4 940
ASUS Radeon HD 6970
4 GB RAM

So I can't even have xsplit open for more than a couple of minutes before my computer starts wigging out and then eventually crashes. By wigging out, I mean having messed up graphics/artifacts when I minimize and maximize a window (like google chrome), as well as the screen going black and then things slowly reappearing (such as the taskbar) but then the computer crashes before they all come back.

I thought this might be because of the new "tier3" update with gamesource, so I uninstalled that reinstalled the current non-tier3 version, but it still crashes me. I haven't streamed or used xsplit in about a month, so it's possible that some newer version is the cause of the problem, is there anyway to download an old version from a month ago?

If it's not xsplit's fault, I think my processor have a problem. After my comp crashed a few times, I checked the processor temperature and it gets up to 65-69° C. I think the box that it came in said it shouldn't get above 62° C. After seeing this, I cleaned out the processor heatsink (it was super dusty), cleaned off the thermal paste and added some new paste and put it all back together. It seems to be running a couple of degrees cooler, but still getting up to 65-66° C and xsplit is still crashing. I think it might still be under warranty, should I try to send it in?

Sorry for the novel, what do you guys think the problem is? And is anyone else having xsplit crash their computer?

You're probably confusing Core temps with Tcase. Tcase is the one that shouldn't go above 62, cores can generally get hotter, unless AMD does something absolutely stupidly different than Intel.

You'd have to look up the specifics for your CPU, Google can handle that for you.

Have you updated all your drivers and OS? I assume you aren't having similar graphical issues without Xsplit open, thus eliminating your GPU as a probably candidate? What's your PSU? Maybe it can't handle the full load?

Here's my PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703006

OS is up to date, as is my graphics card. What else has drivers?

No problems when xsplit isn't open.

Just tried xsplit again, it crashes in like 30 seconds, and I'm not even doing anything with it. It's capturing my desktop, but I'm not recording locally or broadcasting to justintv. The weird thing is this wasn't happening yesterday. I was having some issues yesterday, but I was able to stream a little bit (for about 30 minutes).

Interesting update: I ran xsplit and unchecked the screen region I was capturing so it wasn't capturing anything and I was able to keep it open for a couple of minutes.

During this time, I noticed that the dwm.exe (desktop window manager) process was going crazy. It would be using a bunch of memory and then stop and then use a bunch and then stop until windows finally switched my computer to windows 7 basic mode. This probably isn't a problem with my computer as I think this happens to most people. I just thought it was interesting that dwm.exe was using over 1,000,000 K of memory by the time my computer switched. After it was on basic, it stayed down at like 1,800 K from then on. Probably just some sloppy coding from the xsplit team.

Also, after a couple of minutes, I checked the screen region so that it started capturing again and within 30 seconds, I started getting artifacts, so I closed it immediately and my comp didn't crash. However, it still has artifacts when I minimize and maximize google chrome.

My comments:
- Based on what you have told us, I would not be thinking of returning any of your hardware due to a piece of software (still in beta) crashing the computer. Only if the problem was more widespread
- You cannot downgrade XSplit - they make sure of this by checking your version when you login.

My gut tells me there's an issue between your GPU driver and the XSplit screen capture driver. You say you get instant reaction on the screen when you start capturing it. Maybe un-install XSplit (check google for guide to really clean up) and/or check the version of the "VH ScreenCapture file" XSplit is using. There are threads on the details of the screen capture file name, one of them is by R1CH where he explains how to replace it with another driver.

Edit:
Are the artifacts anything like what is shown here

I just upgraded from a Radeon HD 6770 to a 6970 and I realized that I didn't uninstall and reinstall the video drivers. I then completely uninstalled all of them and reinstalled the latest video drivers and I thought for sure this was the problem, but apparently it wasn't. I also did a clean uninstall (I used revo uninstaller) and reinstall of xsplit after the video driver update and that didn't work either.

Here are some more pieces to the puzzle:
  • Everything is fine until I put my cursor over an icon in my taskbar. I guess the graphic of the icon lighting up causes the problem. Maximizing and minimizing a window also causes the same graphic issues. They seem to be related to desktop graphics.
  • I was able to stream a little bit by avoiding the taskbar. I tried streaming an example of the graphics artifacts and although they happened while I was streaming, they didn't show up in the video (Here's the link).
To answer your question, no the artifacts don't look like the ones in that link. Because I can't stream an example, I'll try to describe them. When I put my cursor over an icon on my taskbar, the screen starts flickering and transparent pieces of my desktop (such as desktop icons or just chunks of the screen in general) start flashing in random places. It's kind of hard to describe, but the easy thing to say is that the artifacts aren't grey blocks or anything, they are parts of my screen.

What should I do next?

Really weird problem

Could you try out Adobe FME and see if the artifacts also appear with that? I'm basically trying to isolate the culprit. FME can even be set up to use XSplit as capture driver, so you can do some tests and cross-reference.

I tried FMLE, but I've never used it before. So I just downloaded it, opened it up with the default settings and tested to see if I got artifacts. I didn't. I tried with it just being open and also I tried after I pressed the start button and it told me my primary server was invalid, but started anyway. I didn't get artifacts either way. But if you'd like me to change some settings, you'll have to tell me what and how. (I did not have xsplit open for the test).

Here's a screenshot of how they are now:+ Show Spoiler +

Btw, thanks for all your help guys!

Under "Device", can you select anything but "XSplit Broadcaster"? If not, please install this. You need to configure it too.

To be able to stream with FME you must enter your "account name" with your stream provider in the "Stream" box. If you are using Justin.tv your "account name" can be found in this file. Forget about all other settings like resolution, we just want to see if XSplit is the culprit (which I think the evidence so far are leaning towards).

In the cases you linked to, I didn't find reports of artifacting, more like freezes, am I right? However XSplit definitely seems to have a few bugs still in it.

Besides xsplit, I have "Google Camera Adaptor 0" and "Google Camera Adaptor 1" but they both give me an error message, so I'll install the vh screencap thing.

Yeah, I guess they didn't mention graphics issues, but my computer freezes the same way they describe. After enough artifacting happens, the computer slows down to about 1 frame every 5-10 seconds and then I manually restart the computer because I can't do anything.

I successfully streamed with FMLE with no issues.

Ok...I don't know what else to say other than file a report with XSplit on their forum homepage. The problem is clearly related directly to their current version of the software. They may be interested in your setup to eliminate the error.

Just a note, there are errors with a few of the AMD drivers wich cause them to crash every fucking minute. I dont know if this is fixed, but it was in it as far as the last drivers. Make sure you download new ones.

SCFH + FMLE 3.2 is way better than VHSC and xsplit.
Summary of guides and tools can be found in my first blog entry. Hehe.

Update: Based on a suggestion from the xsplit forums, I tried clearing my presentation by just click File->"New Presentation", to get rid of my screen region source. While I have no screen region source, the problem is fixed. I can put my cursor over the taskbar with no problems. As soon as I add a screen region back in, the problem starts again. However, I've found that some partial screen regions (such as a small chunk from the middle of my screen, as opposed to the full 1920x1200) don't cause the problem. I don't know what that means, but maybe you guys do!

Edit: I had the idea that maybe I should try a screen region without the taskbar in it, because that seems to be the troublemaker, but this didn't fix the problem

I don't think you have mentioned it, but are you streaming SC2 or stuff from the Windows desktop? For the time being could you do with only streaming SC2? You have the option only to add SC2 to the scene, by clicking inside the game when adding a region. Furthermore the new feature GameSource in XSplit allows you to add SC2 through the "Add Game menu". Maybe if you bypass the Windows desktop you can stream fine?

Edit:
Just double-checking (because I didn't fully understandyour explanation on the OP), you are allowing XSplit to disable Aero, right? Maybe even try and disable manually before streaming to see if it has anything to do with it?

I've only been streaming my desktop, if I stream at all. Most of the time it breaks before I even start broadcasting. I've had Aero manually disabled almost the whole time.

I just tried streaming using the gamesource feature and it worked fine. I streamed sc2, I was able to minimize and put my cursor over the taskbar without any problems. However, my fps was terrible (15-22) and I wonder if that's a bug or if my processor can't handle it. I have a amd phenom II x4 940 3.0 Ghz and a radeon 6970. I had sc2 on lowest possible settings as well. However, back when I streamed with screen region, I could get higher fps (30-50, I think).

How do you add SC2 only with "add screen region"? Should SC2 be in windowed(fullscreen) or just normal fullscreen mode?

P.S. xsplit just released a new version that claims that it fixed the lag/crashing problem, but it's not fixed for me. I did a clean uninstall and everything.

Currently XSplit can open capture windowed games, so SC2 should be in "Windowed mode fullscreen". With XSplit open I just click "Add Screen Region" and then click somewhere on the SC2 window. Then it adds a line called "Screen Window (Starcraft 2) in sc2.exe process".

And yeah the low fps with GameSource is "normal" - they're still fine tuning it afaik. Expect it to perform better in the future

Edit:"Currently XSplit can open" was supposed to be "Currently XSplit can only"

I was able to stream with no problems using this method. I also got much better fps with this method (~30-50). So that must mean that the problem has something to do with either desktop streaming, of having your whole screen stream instead of just one window.

Yeah. I agree with you. I still think you should present the problem to XSplit and hopefully they can eliminate whatever the problem is. It's clearly an internal XSplit thing.
Good luck with it all
