Well, I usually suggest disconnecting your secondary drive while reinstalling, just for the sake of maximum paranoia, but only your system drive should need messing with. As for "keeping your data"... what do you mean by this, specifically?

I have a bigger monitor right now, and whenever I do anything in fullscreen (windowed SCII, streams videos etc) the content doesn't stretch to fill the screen.

Any fixes?

Which monitor do you have? And what resolution are you using in Windows? Chances are that you're not using the native resolution of your monitor, which can mess things up a bit.

Huh?

Are you talking about reinstalling Windows over the previous install of Windows without doing a disc format?

Don't touch Razer rubberdomes. They're trash. Terrible build quality. And of course, the configuration software is shit.

Hi guys =)

I have a pre-built Dell laptop and i need a new graphics card; i should rephrase. I need a graphics card fullstop!

I am not sure about the difference in brands and the cost involved/if it is worth it vs buying a new laptop - and it would save me a lot of time if one of the geniuses in here could help out i was thinking somewhere around 1 -2 GB graphics card?

Your dell lappy isn't likely to be able to take a GPU.

You can't really upgrade a laptop graphics card. While they are called "video cards" by the manufacturers, this is entirely misleading. Most are actually chips integrated into the laptop motherboard. Even if you could swap out the GPU, the problem is most laptop manufactures practice a "just barely enough to not melt" philosophy when it comes to cooling; you would likely also run into issues with power consumption.

RAM and Wifi cards are really the only components which can be easily swapped in a laptop. While you could in theory swap out a CPU (after some rather rigorous disassembly) other concerns like cooling and power make this virtually impossible as well.

Basically you're stuck buying a new one.

This might be something you want to open a thread about, I would think a screenshot or two might be helpful to illustrate exactly what you are describing. It would make more sense than creating a sprawling discussion in this thread. Also make sure to include full system specs.

This question has actually come up before, and I've never been able to find a definitive answer unfortunately. On my current laptop, when I have no sound playing, whenever the harddrive is active I do get a light static in my headphones. As best as I can tell this has to do with EM interference, which might make sense given that the audio port is on the left front, very near to where the hard drive is located.

I once worked in a place that had several computer labs full of some crappy desktop PCs, and they had the same problem but much worse. Whenever headphones were plugged into the front audio jack you would get a constant but light background clicking and static. The front audio ports were located directly under the harddrive though. Again, my best guess is that this is caused by some EM interference from the hard drive or other components.

I've sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer, but that's my best guess. If you have a laptop you may just have to live with it. If you have a desktop I suggest trying the rear audio port or trying to mess around with removing the hard drive or other components and see if it makes a difference.

I got a quick question about RAM i'd love some insight on.

Right now i am using a Gigabyte PH67A-UD3-B3 motherboard, with a G.Skill 4 GB DDR3-1333 kit. These are two sticks of 2GB ram, my motherboard has 4 slots for RAM. I wanted to upgrade my ram with the G.Skill 8 GB DDR3-1333 Kit. This kit consists of two sticks of 4GB RAM, same speed, same voltage, same manufacturer EDIT: as the 4GB kit. Is it possible for me to combine the two sets, essentially having 4+8GB of RAM, or should i just replace the 4GB with the 8GB to save myself some hassle?

Thanks in advance.

You can stick any size and any speed of RAM in as long as your mortherboard supports it. However if you want to utilize dual channel memory, each channel needs to have the same size dimms in both slots. That is, the slots of the same color should have the same sized dimms in them. Full documentation here if you are interested in learning more.

Also note that x86 versions of windows will only be able to utilize a maximum of 4GB of memory.

Awesome, thanks! And don't worry, i'm using a 64 bit OS :p

EDIT: So basically, if i understood the article correctly, i just need to make sure that the same sizes of RAM go into the same coloured slots?

Short answer: That would be correct.

Long answer: Basically, to enable true dual channel memory, you just need the same total storage size in each channel. Each channel typically has two Dimm slots, "Dimm 0" and "Dimm 1". The slots are color corrisponding, both Dimm 1 slots and both Dimm 0 slots will be the same color. If you have the same size dimms in the same color slot (both 2 gigs in the white slots and both 4 gigs in the blue slots or vice versa) then both channels will have the same total memory size and dual channel memory mode can be used.

The dimms do not need to match in speed, the system will simply run all the dimms at the speed of the slowest dimm in the system. You can utilize some of the benefits without matching total memory size in both channels though. I think most motherboards also support "flex mode" which is sort of a hybrid. The memory controller can take a dimm in the channel with more memory and split it between single channel usage and dual channel usage. But you're obviously not going to get the performance boost you would running in true dual channel.

I should note (before someone swoops in to correct me ) that using dual channel memory mode probably will have little impact on your performance while gaming. However it can have dramatic performance effects for certain software applications. And frankly, even if the impact for gaming performance is small, there's no reason not to use it given that all it takes is arranging dimms correctly.

-edit: Might be important Sorry, I forgot to ask, what version of Windows 7 x64 are you using? Just FYI Windows 7 x64 Home Edition only supports a maximum of 8GB memory, while home premium x64 is 16GB. source

Thanks for all the extra clarification, it was very helpfull :D

i actually never knew home edition only supported 8gb, luckily i have access to msdn so i could get windows 7 professional for free :o thanks again!
