So I recently upgraded my GPU from an RX 480 to a 5700 and my wife has a weird issue when playing Planet Zoo. The screen just turns a solid green, and the PC needs to be rebooted. It seems like both the mouse and keyboard stop functioning, so I suspect it may be a PSU issue, but what is odd is that I play more GPU-intensive stuff and no crashes happen.

Other specs of the PC are Ryzen 1600X, MSI B350 Tomahawk mobo, Seasonic S12Iii 620w PSU, 16gb of ram. Thoughts?

I'd say run a bunch of different tests. Memtest86 to figure out if something is wrong with your RAM. Some kind of GPU and/or CPU burn to figure out if the problem manifests there.

I assume drivers and stuff are all up to date?

It could be PSU, but when i had a PSU problem (namely, a lying shitty PSU that claimed to be 750W when it could barely reach half of that), the PC just inexplicably shut down when too much power was drawn.

My spontaneous hunch for screen turning green would be something with your GPU.

Does it happen immediately upon launching, or after a bit of playtime?

Yep, drivers up to date. I googled the issue and it seems like it's fairly widespread, but nobody has come up with a solution, so who knows. First green screen was after 1-2 hours of play, second one was after ~20 minutes.

edit: actually, there's more shittery. So basically, when I built the thing, one of the ram dimm slots stopped functioning properly (I noticed it after the mobo warranty expired unfortunately). It got to the point where slot 4 doesn't recognise any ram, so I can't use it. Unfortunately, due to space I can't use slot 1 either, so I'm stuck with slots 2 and 3. I just noticed that slot 3 wasn't recognised either, going from 16 to 8gb. I previously fixed this by flashing a new BIOS, which initially did the trick, but I noticed this happening again at some point. I'm not sure whether it's related to the green screen issue or not; I wasn't getting it with the 480.

Running mem. in slots 2+3 is a big no-no. Ideally you'd populate 2+4, if failing that then probably 1+3? But the board is screwed so i would've RMA'd.

Definitely run some of the decent memory testers (TM5, GSAT, Karhu, HCI memtest) and run a few benchmarks.

Greenscreen is likely a GPU driver problem. The 5700 moved to a new GPU architecture for AMD and had more driver issues than any generation for a very long time.

Should I just give up on half the ram until I unfuck the mobo (which at this point means waiting to upgrade)?

edit: no errors in memory tests it looks like

While the memory thing is defintively not good, it shouldn't have anything to do with the greenscreen problem. It just makes your RAM a bit slower afaik.

When i got my new SSD half a year ago i immediately managed to break the sata connector when putting it in. The cable had one of these heads that is 90° tilted and i accidentally applied too much downward force which ripped out the SSDs connector. I got that repaired and it works fine, but now im a bit wary about their stability.
So anyway, i want to buy one of those hotswap mounts to be able to hotswap between two SSDs, but im afraid that long tearm use will wear out and eventually break the SATA connector again. Is there a mount where the SSD is connected to an adapter which stays on when you remove the SSD?

If it's passing those memory tests, yeah. It can often break the stability though, and if that happens then you'd get worse problems

If it's running a lot faster than single channel and not erroring then it's fine to leave it in

so I got a chromebook I think it's a 14 inch. and the default resolution isn't equal to the native resolution. I looked this up a little bit and it said it was so things aren't too small but it was confusing. It said it was a sliding resolution so picture quality doesn't degrade but I don't know what that means. Does the resolution I have it on affect video quality at all?

If I'm plugging it into an external monitor (which shows up as a completely different screen as opposed to mirroring the Chromebook screen do I have to adjust the resolution at all? and a secondary question is does changing the resolution matter at all for anything besides how big things look?

I can read everything fine on the native resolution I'm just trying to figure out if there's actually any difference if I'm trying to watch something full screen. thanks for the help, it's very confusing.

On displays with hardware pixels (basically everything modern), running at a resolution which isn't native or a direct multiple of native resolution - having each axis divided by 1 or 2 or 3 etc - makes the image blurrier since it can't be scaled properly.

That downside is a lot less visible on monitors that are just insanely high resolution anyway, but generally you should either run native resolution or something that is 50% of the height and 50% of the width. It will help to display anything more cleanly.

--

To help visualize as to why, keep in mind that those monitors have a set amount of pixels and they can't make them any bigger or smaller like an older CRT monitor could.

Scaling something up by a whole number like 2x is easy - you can just light 2 pixels instead of 1.

Scaling by less than 2x isn't physically possible; you can't light more than 1 pixel but less than 2. If you're trying to scale by a number in between those you have to do some weird averaging like sometimes using 1 pixel, other times using 2; the end result isn't perfectly sharp.

--

Settings for the laptop screen won't affect an external monitor so that part doesn't matter.

a short follow up questions. If I'm hooking up a computer to a 4k tv and the video from the computer is only 1080p (like twitch , youtube, other streaming services etc) is there any difference in quality on if I set the tv display settings on my computer to 4k or 1080? (via laptop display settings for external monitor). The adapter I have only does 4k at 30hz which doesn't work well and I just wanted to know if there's any point to getting an adapter that can do it at 60 even though the video I stream won't be.

from what I can ascertain the upscaling on the tv should be the same either way so I don't think it matters but not sure that's right.

The resolution is set by the PC because it's being used as a monitor. If your PC can't output 4k, that will result in the TV using the lowered resolution. LCD/LED screens look very poor when outside of their native resolution. Generally the screen will appear blurry.

Note that the limiting factor of the PC is the type of connector and the cable. If you have DisplayPort then it will handle 4k without issue. Dual link DVI will also be fine (provided you have a dual link cable). More recent HDMI ports / cables can also handle 4k, but you'll need to find the specific HDMI version of your graphics card. You may be confusing your current monitor's max resolution with the highest your PC can output, as your PC should detect the supported resolutions of any connected screen and limit you to those.

that helps. the main issue which I could have clarified is that i bought a usbc to hdmi adapter for my laptop on our 4k tv. but accidentally one that only does 4k at 30 so that's why I was asking. I think the laptop can output 4k it at least lets me set the tv to 4k.

Currently running with a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate & Razer Deathadder 3500 on my Mac, but I would like a mouse with a little more heft. A buddy of mine gave me a TT Esports Theron a few years back:

https://www.ttesports.com/Mice/28/THERON/productPage.htm?a=a&g=ftr#.Xv4dmy2z3u0

...and I loved it for SC2. The weigh just felt so good.

Anyone know if Razer has a comparable mouse? I'm not such a fan of the super lightweight mice and would like to stick with Razer since it works best with my Mac & MouseAccel settings for SC2.

Yeah, most likely the laptop is capable if you have the right adapter. That said, 4k is very resource intensive (>4x 1080p) and laptops are generally not very powerful. Just playing video may be fine, but you'd probably struggle with anything rendered. 30fps might not look too bad for recorded things, but YMMV.

okay thanks. Based of some testing I'm good for now but If I ever try streaming stuff that's above 1080p quality I'm definately going to get a better adapter. 30 fps was weird because like 80-90 percent of the time it was fine but there were certain shots or cameras (in some of my live concertes) where clearly things were not working and it looked super janked. I guess that makes sense sins the normal framerates are lik 24 and 30.
