My wife recently got the Nexus 7 and its great. The Samsung Tabs are really over priced, and are aesthetically sinful as well, just like a bigger version of their phones, so you end up looking like a kid using a giant phone.

But if you need to use iOS, well then that's your decision made. I wonder if iOS emulators are any good...? I am doing a FutureLearn course in programming a mobile app for Android and the Android emulator you have to use is pretty terrible.

Razer makes a tablet. It's expensive, and it could possibly burn your hands if you try to hold it while playing some games, but TB thinks it's okay.

I hear the Surface Pro2 can run LoL, Dota2, and SC2...

just sayin'.

I wonder if anyone actually burned their balls using an early aluminium body Macbook Pro. Those things got pretty damn hot.

I used one that was literally hot enough to cause burns from extended contact (>10-15 seconds), but it was on the part above the keys of the keyboard.

I don't know, but if I recall correctly there were some studies that probed whether using a laptop on your lap could reduce fertility in men because of the elevated temperatures for a long period.

Oh here it is... (PDF file of study)

I might get both. I'm tempted to get the Nexus 7 for myself, and for Android games. I'd also get the iPad for iOS games, pretty much only for work. It's sad, but it's a requirement.

Are there any differences between all those damn iPads? 1, 2, 3, 4, Air...

There's an iPad Mini which is a bit smaller. It's available with "Retina" high resolution display but also without. You probably want the one with low resolution display as it's the cheapest iPad you can get.

Why aren't there any 64 bit version of Firefox/Chrome? That sounds so stupid.

I think it's mainly because you don't really need it and there's also no Adobe Flash plugin for 64-bit Windows or something (not sure).

Firefox is 64-bit on Linux.

I have everything in 64-bit version, but because Firefox is 32-bit, I also have to install 32-bit Java and it's sometimes messing with my other installations of Java. I mean, how much effort would it be for Google/Mozilla to release a 64-bit version of Firefox or Chrome?

There's a 64-bit Windows Firefox done by some dude. Perhaps try this here: http://www.waterfoxproject.org/

There's also another project but I forgot the name.

Mozilla does nightly builds of a x86_64 Firefox.

Heya guys and gals!

Just a quick question for my fellow geeks!

I've installed ram on tons different machines in the past and I've recently gotten a great deal on two 4 gig ddr 3 sticks, I've already installed them and everything seems to be running great and at the moment I haven't had any stability issues or anything like that. Basically my question is this:

Is there an optimal "setup" for installing ram?

In my situation I have a board that supports DDR 3 and has 6 slots, currently I've been running 6 sticks of 1 gig ddr3 I've removed 2 of the 1 gig sticks and put in the 2 4 gig sticks. Is there an optimal setup I should be using for this? for example should i make sure that the 2 4 gig sticks are in dimm 1 and 2? or dim 1 and 3?

I don't think it'd make a huge difference(performance wise) either way and I'm loving the little boost of 6 gigs added so far. Upon install everything booted right up and windows read everything perfectly. I haven't had any freeze or reboots or anything like that so far.

However I know sometimes there can be weird instances when using different brands of ram and what not so im just curious if I should have a certain set up in the Dimm slots.

Anywho thanks for reading and any info you can throw my way :D

The slots on mobo are usually two different colors or indicated in some way, for example 3 black slots, 3 white

you should have an equal amount of RAM (capacity) in both channels (colors)

interesting; mine are exactly as stated 3 blacks 3 whites. so right now I have 1 4gig in a black and 1 4 gig in a white and the other 4 1 gig sticks alternating as well. which gives 6 gigs per color.

Now considering that the 1 gig sticks are 8500 and the 4gig sticks are 12500 does it make a difference which DIMM the 4 gig sticks are in?

I know that all the ram will run at the speed of the lowest I just wasn't sure if anything else really mattered or if I needed to have any concerns.

The CPU has "channels" for the memory. It should be two memory slots wired to each of the channels. Your CPU is something LGA1366 socket and triple channel and that's why it's six slots on the board?

On a current dual channel board you would have four memory slots and install your memory sticks like this:

http://i.imgur.com/NiBah4t.png

No idea what would theoretically be the best for your triple channel stuff.

It isn't necessarily true that everything runs at the speed of the slowest stick. I'd bet the BIOS configures itself by whatever memory profile it finds on the first stick it looks at. Then about those memory channels... my dual channel board can actually configure different speeds on the two channels though I heard that's a strange feature and not normal.

Could a botched reapplying of the thermal paste on a laptop's CPU slow down the performance?

I did it recently, and I'm not too good with those things. It seemed to have gone fine, but I have been having some weird slow-ups. There are no viruses whatsoever on my computer, and pretty much everything seems pristine.

If temps are worse, yes

They are roughly identical, if not slightly worse. Though I used Arctic Silver 5, which is supposedly much better than the default paste used by the manufacturer. I do feel like I should have gained temperature, instead of it staying largely the same, if not a few degrees higher.

The temperature definitely doesn't rise super high, I've posted in this thread before about my CPU temp. But still...

I suspect that I put on too much, and I was wondering if that could actually hinder performance.
