So the question is: Wait for 800 series or buy GTX 770? Other suggestions are welcome too~~

What other parts do you have? A good alternative to a ~760 is probably more than a month or two away (q2 2014 would be a surprise, q3 not so much)

Yea then it makes sense

760 is probably more cost effective unless you have more specific goals, here's approx performance diff~

670 here is about equal to any random aftermarket 760 that you can buy at stock settings

Isn't the 800 series supposed to have a lot lower TDP? Is my GTX 260 worth running as PhysX dedicated or is it slower than letting the 700/800 do it's own thing?

I've seen people say PhysX never worked quite right for them without a second card. They say it makes the games run perfectly smooth which wasn't possible for them on a single card. I have no first hand experiences about this as I always completely ignored PhysX, don't even install that part of the driver.

The GTX 750 Ti is Maxwell like what will be in the 800 series cards. Someone reported that using it for compute like Folding@Home does not cause the desktop to run choppy any more. If that's true, NVIDIA might have solved some fundamental problem in Maxwell and that PhysX problem from the last paragraph would perhaps also be solved.

Going to Europe at the end of next month. I'm going to have a couple electronics with me; should I buy a 120V -> 220V transformer in advance (online cheaper? haven't even looked in stores) or wait until I get there? Any recommended places to get one? Currently living in BC, Canada

Are you sure you need it? All chargers and power bricks I look at around me seem to mention they work from 100V to 240V and both 50Hz and 60Hz. You might just need an adapter for the power outlets.

[It's by the way 230V in all of Europe nowadays, Britain was 240V and mainland was 220V in the past.]

Ah, you know, you're totally right. Checked the details on the power bricks of my stuff and they are all good for 100-240V input ^^

Thanks!

I'm having trouble turning on the desktop I'm building.

I have all the components installed, but the computer keeps on shutting down 8-9 seconds after turning on.

What are the common causes of this problem?

For new builders, this is typically because they forgot to install standoffs or didn't mount the heatsink properly.

Maxwell, especially 20nm versions is supposed to have better perf/watt, the higher end cards will still probably target similar tdp like 200w for an 880, just higher performance at that power window

I don't know much of PhysX but with a dedicated and significantly more powerful card, i have heard of higher FPS when using 1 card only as opposed to a weaker card to assist, IIRC

I replaced the battery in my UPS. It's currently charging the new one. The software shows a percentage for the battery's charge which is slowly increasing.

How does it know that number? Is it just some sort of rough guess or does it actually know exact values for the charge?

I would assume it does a crude voltage reading on the battery and determines it from that. Battery voltages fall monotonically as they are drained, so with a quick-and-dirty calculation or look-up table, you can roughly (well, reasonably decently) determine the charge level from where you are on the voltage vs. capacity curve.

Battery charge and shutdown circuits are based on battery voltage from what I've seen (I'm not an expert at all on these or this area), so I'd think this would be the same.

I would like if you guys can link me possibilities on great computer cases that is around my price range. Pref Sites would be like Newegg, Amazon but others may work. Would rather order online instead of store.

It's kind of a commoditized product that most people don't even use all that much, so whatever doesn't seem to have a lot of bad reviews that is cheap. That isn't ancient and uses SATA, of course. And if you burn DVDs, make sure it supports whatever formats or things you need.

There are bluray combo drives too. I don't think bluray is really used for anything outside movies, though.

Bluray data discs are out there, but yeah mostly only used in bluray movies. Which, if you get a drive, be aware that Windows doesn't include the codecs to play bluray movies. You need additional software, and if you go the OEM route for a drive, it won't have it. (I can rip bluray movies no problems, but I can't play the discs directly in Win7.)

What can I expect if I connect a PSU to a motherboard with no components installed, and then short the power pins? Will it try to POST and fail with a CPU code?

Just had a genuine DOA board that wouldn't even attempt to turn on; power pins did nothing at all. Surprisingly, the PSU was fine.

I'm now paranoid, so I want to rule out the same fault in the replacement board before doing anything else.

Do you guys know anything about tablets?

I'm going to need to buy one for work. I don't like Apple much, so I was looking at the Samsung Galaxy Tab, for $400. Seems a little steep. I'd need something pretty decent, and while $400 isn't out of my budget, I'd like to see if I can get better for cheaper, but I'm completely clueless about the brands other than Apple and Samsung.

I'm hoping that question fits in this thread, right?

What are you looking for exactly? Nexus 7 is overall pretty good, especially for its price. If you need S-Pen support then you'll probably want a Galaxy Note.

And if you'd rather just have Windows, there's the Dell Venue 8 Pro. Also Asus Transformer Book T100 if you want something that can sport a full-size laptop keyboard as a dock.

For Android, usually you need to hunt for a reason not to get a Nexus 7. e.g. need larger size, need S-Pen, need lower cost, etc. It's something of the de facto standard.

But yeah, what does this work entail, how would you be using it, and what are you actually looking for? Size? etc.

The tablet would have to be able to run games, most of all. The work is translation, sometimes of mobile games. It's always better to actually be able to play the game to know more about it.

Problem is, a lot of these games are iOS only, so I guess there's no alternative there... Though the Nexus 7 looks quite nice for my needs, as far as Android-compatible games are concerned. I'd also use it for other stuff like browsing, perhaps reading or videos.

I like words.
