Cool Cyro, thanks! I was just wondering since it didn't happen right away but a few days later. Always nice to get confirmation.

Maybe three days ago my surge protector lost power for a second and when it came back on I believe it sent more electricity through than it was supposed to. I'm replacing the surge protector and everything seemed fine but just now I hit the power button on my computer and I heard the fans start up, stop, start up, stop, then finally it turned on. I can verify that my computer actually tried to turn on then quit because on my monitors the Gigabyte logo started to show but then disappeared. On the third attempt it managed to turn itself on with no problems and everything's running fine. Is there anything I can do to verify if there is or was any damage done? My Gigabyte board does something that seems similar when I wipe the BIOS settings, load defaults. I think there's also a way to push it to do that on/off stuff when changing RAM settings or something (don't quite remember).
To test if everything works, there's nothing special to do usually. Just see if the PC seems to work alright. If Windows was running when it happened, there's this command to check Windows' files (open command prompt as Admin):
sfc /scannow

My wireless router seems to have died. I mostly watch streams and do a little online gaming. Are there any specific specs/features I should look for/avoid in the replacement? I'd like to keep my cost under $100 and will probably be shopping at Best Buy since it's about the only place to buy electronics locally.
|
No, not particularly. Residential routers are pretty consistently mediocre. Best you can look for are reviews indicating a good and consistent lifespan and an interface that is decent to use. You'll also want to look into the wireless quality if getting one with that. The 5Ghz band is just an alternative and is not strictly better than 2.4Ghz by any means. IIRC, it tends to have shorter range but is less prone to interference/congestion. Dual band is popular these days and wireless routers can achieve very high speeds (500+ Mbps), so if you have (or plan to have) devices that can make use of these, look into these features.
You can also look for more specifics features like Quality of Service (QoS), but such features are pretty consistently mediocre on residential routers (you may notice a pattern here...).
You can also look into getting a router that can handle third-party firmware (like Tomato, which I use).
Just make sure it covers the basic array of features like port forwarding, has the wireless capabilities you want, and others have taken the plunge first . Also look into return policies and warranties.

How hard is it to unlock a phone? I can only buy a locked Moto G from Telus, but I want to use it on Rogers. I've read that all you need to do is buy a code?
|
You just need to enter a code, you can either get this from the carrier you bought the device with (Telus) or a third party.
|
Oh cool, I think I remember reading that buying it with carriers is way overpriced. Thanks for the help, glad to know it's not super complicated.

My RAM is running at 800MHz at CR: 1T. How do I change it so it will run at 1600MHz? Do I change the MHz speed or the Command rate?
|
ddr = double data rate
800*2 = 1600 effective

So I don't have to change anything? It's already at 1600?

Yes, it's already at 1600MHz.

I want to buy a SSD. Does this mean I will lose everything and I have to install Win7 64Bit again? It is not possible just switch Win7 from HDD to SDD? If not possible, can I use my sole Win7 64Bit license or I have to buy a new one? (Mainboard: AS Rock Extreme3; HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB)
If I put a wlan-card in my pc (after ssd and win7 installation), I have to install win7 again?
I have heard that win7 is so "deep" that any modification in your pc means you have to re-install your win7, that's why I ask you.
Sorry for my bad english and I have zero knowledge about buildung a pc

You could probably clone the windows install and if neccesary, change registry key to allow you to set AHCI mode in bios, and then use a few commands to check that TRIM is working etc; i'd reccomend reinstall though on SSD though (you can copy documents folders etc over from hdd if you want, even the desktop etc is nothing more than a folder that you can copy/paste from drive to drive) as it doesn't even take very long and is easier (or rather; harder to mess up - that's an important thing even for people who know what they are doing in some detail)
Same windows license is fine (and legal etc), AFAIK you don't even get bothered by anything unless you change like the motherboard, but it's still fine to use then if it's the same "system"
If I put a wlan-card in my pc (after ssd and win7 installation), I have to install win7 again?
Not sure what you mean by this, for most stuff you should be able to just install drivers for it. The storage drive with the operating system on is a probably the most important and sensitive to change

Very thank you, Cyro.
Are sc2, d3, windows media player, vlc, MSE etc counted among "document folders" too? It's pretty annoying to install everything again. Is my Nvidia going to lose its newest update (Geforce 311.06 Driver), if I re-install win7?
I have an external HDD (750 GB) and I will copy all document folders then I copy them to my internal HDD.

Speccy (a program) shows Motherboard temperature at 110 degrees celcius temperature, when I touch the case it's not hot at all. Speedfan reports 30 degrees celcius. Not sure what is going on, can anyone help?

Missing sensor, it's normal.

If you plug in an SSD, you can just install windows then turn off system and re-plug HDD so that they are both plugged in and you are booting from SSD (maybe have to set boot priority) and then you can copy stuff drive to drive without an external
Some games (i think sc2) can be copied, others can't, and you'd lose nvidia driver etc but you can just redownload ~331.93 or whatever driver you want in a couple minutes, install it and restart

Hello everyone, I would like ask you guys, can I run StarCraft 2 with these specifications: Laptop Acer Aspire 5610Z CPU: Intel T2080 1.73 Ghz x2 GPU: Nvidia Geforce 7600 GO 128 MB Dedicated; Approx Total Memory: 888 MB RAM; DirectX 11 RAM: 2GB Windows 7
I think it's a very simple question.

Same answer as before with a bit added: If it runs, then won't run too well and you'd have to stick to low settings and 1v1 for a decent experience probably - but 2gb RAM might cause issues as the game likes to use 2gb for itself, but the OS etc needs quite a bit too
I don't know anything about those GPU's, but if you have the laptop, try starter edition (free) and if you don't have it, probably best to avoid

If I could get a 4GB Ram for 32 bit laptop, would performance increase?
