That is why ULV are so bad, tdp readings are chipwide, not just the cpu portion. If I run a CPU burning test, my 3500U will happily stay at 2.4GHz all day with 4 threads fully loaded (after I did a cooling mod, fuck you ASUS), with a power draw of ~12W iirc, but graphics at the same time? NOPE. Throttling and completely uneven performance spikes all round.

I have a 3570k overclocked to 4.4 and a gtx 560ti and 8gb ram. Should I get a new motherboard and get a Haswell i7, a 780 and 24gb of the new ddr4?

DDR4 won't be available until Haswell-E late next year (first CPU release with a memory controller that supports it)
24gb is an odd amount of RAM also

You can do all of this on 4gb of RAM, unless you specifically want to utilize 4-8x as much
Hyperthreading (feature of i7 over i5) doesn't help with any of the tasks you listed either, and going ivy bridge to haswell CPU is a marginal upgrade at best
If you wanna throw a ton of money at stuff for the sake of it (you could spend £5000 without your performance changing significantly in any of the stuff you said) or for a specific reason, you can get advice from build resource thread for specific upgrades

I haven't looked at computer hardware in a while (I used to be pretty active in this forum). I built my computer in early 2010, right now I'm running an i5-750 with a GTX 460, 8 gb of ram, 64 gb ssd, 1 tb storage drive. How much of an upgrade would I really get if I were to build a new computer? I really only play dota 2 at this point, which I can play with almost everything maxed out.
Might have just answered my own question with that last statement

Depends on what you're looking to do; there's quite a big gap between a stock i5 750 and an overclocked 4670k, as well as quite a gap from a 460 to etc an r9 290/gtx780 or even a midrange card. Hard to say..

yea I don't really use my computer for much beyond torrenting, watching shows/movies, and gaming.

A lot of people don't, but in many games there's much advantage to be had from having faster CPU or GPU. You might wanna wait for 20nm gpu's next year and grab a midrange card then, and get new cpu/mobo some time between now and 2015 (in the interests of keeping high performance system, if that's what you want)

Yeah if KOF is only playing Dota2 these days, a Source game, he really doesn't need to do much of anything. His Gateway FHD2401 is a classic 24" (1920x1200, not 1080P), so there is a tiny bit more incentive for GPU upgrade in the future. But if he's mainly playing Dota2, I don't think it's at all urgent.
+ Show Spoiler +http://gamegpu.ru/rts-/-strategii/dota-2-test-gpu.html Some numbers from GameGPU to ballpark the hardware requirements - and well, Dota2 just isn't a demanding game haha
I'd get that 750 above stock though, cmon KOF haha. I do remember reading his posts when I first joined. Way before the SB release.

Before my time, i think
OCing on such CPU's.. so juicy.. Haswell OC is basically 3.8ghz (stock turbo) to 4.4-4.7 on i7 (typically cooled, normalish chip, no delid, up to ~124% clockspeed) which is nothing compared to previous ocers

Oh I'm not at stock I'm running at like 3.4ghz lol

Im in pretty much the same boat, the only thing I can justify buying is a new ssd because 55.7 usable gb is too annoying to manage.
But I haven't even bothered to do that.

Same here. Thought about it a lot, then ended up moving everything other than windows and like..excel onto my storage drive. Steam loads slower but honestly I never so rarely turn off my computer that I hardly notice

I'm currently considering buying a Gigabyte AMD Radeon R9 280X OC 3GB DDR5. In the description it says that the clock is 1100 MHz boosted. However, for the slightly more expensive ASUS AMD Radeon R9 280X DC2T V2 3GB GDDR5 it only says that it has 1070MHz, no mention of "boosted". Is there a difference between the card (besides the MHz-number) that I should be aware of or is the dealer just sloppy with his descriptions?
|
The 1070MHz is the boost clock. ASUS's base clock is 970MHz but base clocks are not relevant.
The ASUS is a triple slot cooler so be aware that the thing is enormous.

Ok cool, gonna get the gigabyte then. Thanks a lot!

Mid game my blackwidow decides it doesn't want to register alt+1 and alt+2 anymore. Anyone heard of issues like this before or have any suggestions to fix this?
My alt keys work with every other combination and my 2 key works by itself and with my ctrl macros still.

For the life of me I can't figure out something that ought to be kind of simple:
In Windows 8.1, I have my laptop to protect with PIN instead of password since I set the pin to 4 characters instead of the long ass password. Anyway, when I use password, the computer boots up really quickly (to desktop). HOwever, when I use PIN, it takes like a whole minute before it even gets out of the lock-screen and into the desktop and then starts up. Any idea why? It was fine for a while, but i'm not sure if I changed something, etc. Um, if nothing works, I'll just use a small windows8 account password =/

Why not just use your pin for your password???

Can anyone recommend or should I make a thread?
I want to buy a laptop that is 1. light ( 4.4 lbs at most) 2. doesn't really need an optical drive on it, I would assume it adds substantial weight 3. at least 4gb ram. 4. preferrably at least i3 3rd gen and above i5's, i7's etc.. 5. about storage about hd 120gb at minimum.. 6. no os needed (assuming someones sells it to make cheaper) 7. most importantly the budget. somewhere around 600 with a little bit of wiggle room if necessary but not by a lot 8. (if given several choices, "stylish" would be good)

Context:
This might be a little strange, but I'm kind of desperate at this point. I've googled around and haven't found anything particularly useful or applicable to my situation which is this: on my work computer I have internet access that is "limited", I can go to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, reddit, hell, I can even go to GomTV.net! But I can't go to team liquid, or liquipedia! Its killing me. My job is one that requires me to be available when a customer needs me, but in the in between times I've got lots of time to kill. Obviously I'd like to fill that time with starcraft and my friends at TL, plus I'd like to start contributing to liquipedia. I mean, I can go to fucking bulbapedia, but not liquipedia? Makes me so mad.
Question:
When I go to one of these sites however, it says "website category blocked: games". I know I could install a vpn and be done with it, but that kind of solution isn't practical on my work computer. Does anyone know a trick to circumvent the "website category"? Can I use a chrome or Firefox add on to trick the network into thinking TL is no worse than Facebook? I can't find anything from my searches but I'm probably just looking for the wrong things.
