^ This is part of a larger problem of my computer crashing.
I was mining bitcoins and didn'dt have problem until now. When i came back after going out for an hour, the screen was in gibberish colors (not blue screen or black screen). I restarted, and windows wouldn't boot for a while. I removed my graphics card and it started behaving normally for a while, and crashed one more time eventually. Until now, it has been fine. But i still get I/O errors.
My SSD will randomly start going into high usage, and everything will start lagging. I'm wondering if that pesky sandforce driver problem of destroying SSDs finally kicked in. hence i'm trying to update my ssd firmware in teh above post.
But what's weird is my GPU is no longer detected. i tried reinstalling the drivers, but still no luck. Did my GPU die too? Would it have overheated from bitcoin mining? i've been mining for weeks now, with no problem. The door and window was closed to my room, but it's unlikely it would have pushed it over the temperature threshold at 11pm. my room didn't feel much hotter at all when i came back.
So i'm wondering if my SSD AND my GPU are having problems, or just my GPU. Long before, I had seen my GPU temps were at 50C to 55C when running at full capacity mining bitcoins. Is that unreasonable? is it more closer to 80-90C?

My Lenovo y500 laptop will take too long to ship, besides haswell came out so I'mma cancel it and order a new one from newegg/xoticpc. Can someone plz help me decide between the following i7 4700MQ choices, listed by current preference:
1. $1050 Lenovo Y510p - GT 750M SLI; 12GB Ram; 15.6" glossy screen, ; 8GB SSD+1TB 5400m; no optical drive (so +$70 later for ultra-bay with dvd burner that I can swap with 1 of gt 750Ms) Price includes -$100 new customer coupon.
2. $1160 Sager NP8230 - GTX 770M; 8GB Ram, 15.6" matte screen, 750gb 7200rpm drive, dvd-rw
3. $910 Sager NP6652 - GT 750M; 8GB Ram, 15.6" IPS screen, 750gb 7200rpm drive, dvd-rw (and has much better battery life then other 2, but it'll be plugged in most of the time)
I'm leaning towards #1 cause I like the look, it will ship fastest, and it seems like the most bang for the buck of the 3. I've read that the screen isn't too bad for a glossy one. Comes with OS while Sagers don't at that price point.
Here are some quick questions:
Is IPS screen better than other screens? If so will I later be able to add another 750m to the sager np6652 to SLI them (guessing that's a no)? If yes to both I'll prolly go with $900 Sager. 3-5hrs on battery seems pretty sick, and I only need better vcard to be future proof
From what I've read GTX770m will perform about the same as GT 750M sli, is this true? If they're about the same might buy sager over lenovo cause I heard quality is great and I won't have to mess with SLI/swapping dvd-rw
Laptop will be used for gigs/occasional gaming. Thanks in advance!

Hrm, i'll be recieving a replacement CPU fan later, but the heatsink paste isnt arriving for a couple weeks.
I have a Scythe Yasya which uses these strange clips to attach the fan to the heatsink.
Think its safe to disconnect the clips / fan and replace it without removing the heatsink? I mean i wont fuck up the CPU underneath by moving it a little will i? (I wont be disconnecting the things that hold the heatsink in place.)

IPS screens are generally better than TN, yes.
Generally, you can't upgrade the GPUs on the laptop as they're soldered on. And even if you could, MXM is expensive so its rather stupid to do.

Most heatsinks use those clips to attach the fans. They're relatively easy to clip on / unclip so no you're not going to fuck something up unless you're extremely clumsy.

^ I'll post here later when ive broken my mobo and cpu then xD
Thanks for the reply!

What's a good way to determine if performance is being limited by throttling due to temperature (old laptop)?

Monitor temps and clock speeds with somethings like coretemp, cpu-z and msi afterburner

Thanks for the reply, in that case option #3 falls off because I want the laptop to be somewhat future proof. Out of the two remaining which one should I go with?

You do realize that there exist optical drives (or bays, etc.) with USB interfaces?
You don't want SLI unless you enjoy wrestling with settings and having some games, especially new releases, not work that well.
I don't know anything about that particular model, but my guess would be that the Sager (Clevo) has a cheaper feel and build quality. If you're somewhere where you can't control the lighting and a glossy screen would be a liability, take the second one.
|
Thanks, don't think glossy screen will be an issue so I ordered Y510p and will prolly just get a usb optical drive from amazon, hopefully I won't have too many sli issues edit - turns y510p was updated with a matte screen

What's your CPU OC? clockspeed/volts?
I'd trust the capstone 550 but probably not attempt to OC gpu's too

You're pushing it but it should be OK considering the quality of your PSU. Since you're obviously overclocking, part of me would instinctively go for a model that has enough native PCIe plugs for your setup.
|
If you keep the GPUs locked down with PowerTune settings or just don't overclock them, it should be okay, as in nowhere close to 550W on a heavy load like a demanding game. Especially if you don't have a penchant for running combined CPU+GPU stress tests for hours, you're good to go, after you hook up those molex adapters etc.
GPU overvolts and bets are off. Ivy Bridge overclocked doesn't use too much power unless you're trying to burn the chip.
Kinda just dumb trivia, but IIRC Kingwin Lazer [sic] Gold 550 W, another Super Flower Golden Green unit, has 4 PCIe power connectors natively.

Hey guys, ive got this new computer setup running but I need some software stuff done. I put my old hard drive into my new desktop alongside a new SSD. The old hard drive had xp from the previous computer so it blue screens. I need to reformat the old hard drive that will be used as storage, but how do I do that without installing windows? Right now im installing windows 7 on the SSD as my boot drive.
I have an XP cd, but not entirely sure what to do with it, it kinda blue screened while starting the reinstall windows process.

You can format the drive in Window's disk management.

I know that the 3570k is recommended over 8350 but with the money i save it could go into a better gpu so my question is: FX-8350+7950 or 3570k+7870xt?
|
A 7870 is more than enough for 90% of games. So the latter. I mean I guess if you're not playing a lot of sc2 and the only thing you want is super ultra graphics you could go with the first one but the second choice is much better all around.
|
You only save like $20 getting the FX8350 over the 3570k and the price difference between a 7870 Tahiti LE and a 7950 is closer to $50 then it is to $20...

I have a microcenter near me so i think I can can save about $50 assuming the asrock extreme4 is equivalent for both
