Nothing's good enough for a smooth sc2, you have to remember 3.3ghz ivy will beat 4ghz nehalem by a decent margin (i7 920-960 stock 2.66-3.2ghz oc'd to 4) which was the best we had just a couple years ago

Yeah, pretty much it's a matter of expectations.

Lots of people play and have played SC2 on Core 2, Nehalem, Phenom II, Athlon II, FX, etc. and those are not better than 3.2 GHz Ivy Bridge (at least not without heavy OC).

I'm sure with enough effort, one could mod a suitable cooling system for a laptop.

Actually, on a practical matter, nobody said that temperatures under 8 threads prime95 needs to be reasonable. And definitely not IntelBurnTest or similar. If you were to hypothetically overclock a i7-3940XM for gaming, you could turn off hyperthreading and possibly make the OC turbo bins for 4 cores active lower than the bins for fewer cores. So long as it's not exploding doing what you ask of it, it could be okay.

Anyway, point is, compared to what's available and all that cost, it's really not ideal. You can throw money at a problem, but here that just means the money's been funneled to RAID0 SSDs and a GK104 GPU in a laptop (configured like a downclocked desktop GTX 670), not that SC2 performance will be amazing.

Thx for answers guys. So do you think i should give up on gaming laptops if i'm (semi hardcore ) gamer ? i sort of have an option of buying a cheaper laptop (around £ 1k mark) and then getting an 1.5 £ desktop but that only makes sense if i cant really play SC2 on a laptop.
also if not this laptop what would u recommend getting atm.

Laptops will never be as good as a desktop for gaming. It's a matter of how much you are willing to pay and if you really need the ability to be that mobile with a gaming machine. You could probably get a desktop + tablet for close to what you'd pay for a high-end gaming laptop.

Overclocked 3570k + a low-mid tier GPU like a hd7770 will wreck sc2, something like a $600-800 build (random ballpark, i have no idea of US prices..) that you need to get 4/8gb RAM, decent board, 3570k, 7770, psu, case, cpu heatsink etc and you have performance that is not matchable by any laptop, the more you overclock the better it is - for this price you will destroy an LGA2011 extreme edition platform at stock (like huskies $5k or whatever 3-way-sli-680 system..) by massive margins and destroy pretty much any laptop of any budget by massive margins aswell - you cant actually beat it in terms of performance, unless you count upgrading GPU which will only increase framerate when supplies are low and it's well in the triple digits with game maxed anyway.

Hey all,

just started playing on the new SC2 patch. Every game at some point the screen just gets black, tabs to desktop and sometimes tabs back in to SC2, sometimes crashes completely.

Anyone know how to fix this?

hello after these new patch the game stutters even playing with AI anyone know if there are some settings i can change or anything i can fix? (i played WoL with no problems these started in while i was playing hots beta and WoL 2.0)

Hey all,

I have an old system that I want to upgrade, it's mainly used for gaming. Currently sports an Intel Quad Core, 4 Gig RAM and an NVidia 285 GTX.

The new components that I would like to get:

- Intel Core i5 3570 (3400) Quad Core
- ASRock Z77 Performance
- ASUS Nvidia GeForce GTX650Ti
- Corsair Vengeance LP 16GB 2-Kit XMP DDR3 1600MHz CL9

I already have an SSD that I will keep.

My Questions:
- Do these components fit together? (I was specifically unsure with the RAM, are they a good choice and is the speed correct?)
- What is the rough power consumption of these components with heavy load?

The components are fine. Why 16 gigs of ram though?

Probably 300-400watts under load. Maybe 400 under an artificial 100% load of everything.

They fit together but it's a very poor choice of components.

If it's mainly used for gaming than why waste money on memory that won't be used?

You need a core i5 3570k to overclock. If you're not overclocking than getting a high end Z77 over a H77 or B75 is a huge waste of money.

Those components won't come close to 400w under full load, both the core i5 3570 and GTX 650 Ti use under 100w.

At the very least, it should last you until your next upgrade cycle. Most probably it will be fine well past that mark. Worst case you can always add another 8GB in, but you don't really use large amounts of RAM outside of graphical / multimedia work.

I will, then, yes. I read that I can go up to about 4.2 Ghz without trouble. I'll also add a Hyper 212 Evo cooler.

I wouldnt reccomend asrock boards personally after all of the drama with wrong voltages being used on CPU etc, but im pretty sure thats only a couple of boards and not at all relevant for average consumer.

It sucks to be one of those using ~1.5v on delidded ivy bridge and having the board overvolt to 1.65~ under load though and kill the CPU from an otherwise ok voltage.

hmm, I picked an ASRock because I made good experiences in the past with them, but it's about 4 years that I last bought a Mainboard from them. What would you recommend instead?
