I just moved it back till it felt comfortable and then I measured it today.

Both of these are pretty big red flags Could you elaborate a bit? Red flags as in "yeah, don't do that anymore" or red flags as in "oh, you probably messed up ___ and that's why your machine won't POST"? The only thing I've been able to discover is that if I hold delete right after pressing the power button (as though to go into the bios setup, but with no video output I can't see if anything is actually happening), it powers off and immediately comes back on again. Holding delete at this point does not do anything; only the first time I power it on. Does that mean anything to you? I'm starting to worry that somehow my motherboard is borked, but I'm not sure what else I can do to try and get things working or diagnose the problem with no case/mobo speaker for error code beeps. Edit: Also, attempting to power on with no RAM installed gives the same result; lights and fans and initial hard drive activity, but nothing else.

If you're not getting video output then your video card might have died or maybe the PCIe connector came loose?

If you want to clear dust inside a computer, it's best to use compressed air instead of a vacuum. Makes sense about vacuums, but I would be surprised if that were the problem right now; the only thing I actually touched (with the long plastic hose on one) were case fans and the cpu heatsink after removing it. Note taken for the future, though. I actually just replaced the video card since my old one died (it produced random red dots and dollar signs during POST and Windows disabled it on startup), but it did at least post with the old card. Apparently I mucked something up while installing the new one, since now even with only the cpu, hdd, and 1 stick of ram plugged in, it won't post with either card ![]()

If their sata/power cables weren't hooked up to the motherboard properly they wouldn't appear at all, right? I can hear the HDs spin up, and the DVD drive opens and closes, so they are receiving power. I'll look for a CD to boot into the recovery console and try to see if the main HD got corrupted somehow, I guess.

You can try a windows repair through the CD to fix your boot sector and see if that fixes things.

Recently I have become increasingly afraid of the effects of torrenting. I don't know where else to ask. Yahoo answers isn't techy enough and stackoverflow would probably not condone this kind of information. If someone were to do it, what benefits does being behind a vpn provide while torrenting? Is my download speed slower? eg. does encryption require sending more data? Will bandwith throttling still occur? Say my ISP finds out I am uploading a lot. Will they think throttle my bandwith because of that? VPNs seem expensive so I'm reluctant to get one and would like to ask the quick question in case anyone knows.

Encryption generally should require a pretty modest overhead, in terms of additional data that needs to go in and out of your home. However, because all traffic needs to go between the actual source through the VPN through to you (rather than just source to you), and vice versa, there can be greater latency, greater jitter, lower data rates. Even if the ISP cannot see the contents of your data, they can still see the amount of traffic coming through as well as its patterns. If you're using a lot of data and they'd throttle you before, they'd still throttle you. They can also see that you're sending all your data to some IP, and they might easily know that that IP is a VPN host.

Had to recreate my MBR and all that good stuff, and then switch which drive was set as active. Now I just have to go get some thermal compound, as my CPU is idling at 65-75 C. Thanks to everyone who helped!

I guess I would need to use a seedbox on the Tor network if I wanted privacy and security.

Samsung Series 3 is rather cheap, but at least it gets the price down to $600: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834131394 similar specs to the Acer but slightly worse, and a screen that's not quite as bad as the one on the Acer. And it's not an Acer Aspire.

Now I just have to go get some thermal compound, as my CPU is idling at 65-75 C Should have mentioned that before, my 3770k @1.13v idles at something like 5c above room temp, without lowering clock speed and voltages.. idle temps more than something like 10-15c above room temp are pretty big cause for concern, 50c is just major problem.
