What is the minimum upload bandwidth for playing and streaming a SC2 game? For reference, a 360p video quality from YouTube would be acceptable for me.

I have Bell Canada internet at about 2.5 megabit/s download and about 70 kilobyte/s upload.
Thanks.

Are you talking about 70kbps or 70kB/s?

Your connection should be sufficient for a 360p stream. Just be careful of your bandwidth usage if you aren't on a grandfathered plan.

2.5 Mbps 70 kBps or in other words a 3/1 connection I'd assume..

...Well, to be safe, my upload is around 50-70 kilobyte/s. Is it still ok for streaming?
And on a related note, would I be able to use Skype video (separately) at my upload bandwidth?

Edit: please use this >>> 2.5 megabit/s download, 0.5 megabit/s upload approximately

Skype doesn't require that much bandwidth nor does playing games. It's only streaming that eats up the bandwidth.

Are you on Bell's Essential Plus plan? It has a very small monthly bandwidth cap so I'd be careful streaming if I were you...

70Kbps is horrible even for Canadian internet. You would want at least .5-1Mbps upload for streaming minimum. No way that's possible with your current speed. The bandwidth cap skyR mentioned would also limit streaming quite a bit too.

Well a Skype voice conversation uses ~12kB/s, I think. That leaves you with 50-60kB/s for streaming video and StarCraft, which doesn't use much bandwidth.

He's talking about 70 kBps which equates to 1 Mbps.

What do you mean EVEN for Canadian internet? My internet is 70Mbps/30Mbps, the cheapest package I can even get is still 1.5Mbps/640Kbps

I tried to stream with my connection.. 1 MB upload and with the stream i get like 1 sec dealy in game.

Not sure if upload does not affect game play. I got some lag due to my location (Argentina)... but i cant stream and play at the same time either. Even if i alocate only 30/50 KB/s to the stream.. (Got 90 KB/s total upload)

Could it be a problem with the broadcastin progam we use?

Since when is 70 kilobytes per second (KB/s) equal to 1 megabit per second (Mb/s)? 70 KB/s = 560 Kb/s = 0.56 Mb/s.

Considering SC2 and Skype is also using some upload, and you don't want to have your output maxed out constantly, you can maybe support a 320 Kb/s (40 KB/s) average stream.

For reference, I checked a random SC2 match vid on Youtube. The 640x360 (360p) .flv is about 750 Kb/s average.

edit: typos unfortunate lol, I had one too

Yeah I know bits to bytes conversion, I just misread that; my bad.

Congratulations, you are in one of the few locations that actually offers a fast Canadian internet plan. Look around, the majority of Canadians have horrible internet plans that are overpriced compared to many many other countries.

1Mbps was an educated guess since Bell is a DSL provider and 3/1 has been the slowest plan for the last two years or more for Bell. Since Bell is a DSL provider, I don't see how it would be possible for him to achieve 70 kBps on a 0.5 Mbps connection. My distance from the CO and line quality is amazing and I can't even achieve a perfect 1Mbps or 7Mbps speed.

Are there no intermediate upload speeds offered between 500 kbps and 1000 kbps? Like maybe 640 kbps?

Regardless, I can imagine somebody being on a 1000 kbps plan and getting like 600 kbps upload in reality because of line quality. If 70 KBps is the observed throughput, I'm treating that like that's all the connection will provide.

Where I live in the US, Bell offers 6 Mbps / 512 kbps as the maximum plan in some areas, with things like 3 Mbps / 384 kbps and 1.5 Mbps / 256 kbps as other options. Sometimes max offered is less than 6 Mbps down depending on distance from the CO, sometimes much higher like 20 Mbps down, like in more populated areas or a string of apartment complexes. I would assume there are more gradations in different parts of Canada as well. That was a guess on my part--probably actual Canadians know more than me about this.

Lowest tier offered currently is 3/1. Bell had a 2Mbps / 800 Kbps plan roughly three years ago iirc but it was upgraded to 3/1Mbps a while back. I don't remember Bell offering 640Kbps or 700Kbps upload in the last five years but it's quite possible that he's on a grandfathered plan or was put on a low profile due to a poor line.
