Dear TL,
This is my first post on this tech support and after 2 hours of going crazy and doing all sorts of attempts about what just happened, I am really hoping someone here can save my life. So here's what the situation:
-I have an ACER LCD monitor, X193W. The default or recommended (and desired) resolution is 1440 x 900. -My graphics card is XFX ATI Radeon HD 4850 1 GB (only one) -Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit
So up until couple hours ago, I was able to go onto my computer, do whatever I want under the resolution 1440x900. Then I had a power outage in my room (thanks bro-in-law), and when I got power back on and logged onto the computer, I realized my resolution was all weird and all, being 1400x1050. I was like wtf, so I went "Screen Resolution" on my right click to fix it and I realized I can't find my resolution I had for years, my 1440x900!!!
I went wtf seeing how I had 1600x1200, 1400x1050, then 1280x1024 and 1280x800 and etc. There was not a single option for 1440x900. I am completely dumb struck seeing how this never happened to me before where I magically lost 1440x900. I checked on my graphics card control center (since my monitor is plugged there on my graphics card, VGA), and I can't find 1440x900 anywhere in any of the settings!!!
Now, I googled intensively to find solutions but no go. I must have went to 20 different sites, I even updated and reinstalled my graphics card driver, the monitor driver, etc. I even disable my graphics card driver, monitor driver, etc etc. Anything I can think of and I have no clue what to do!
So pleaseeee, please help this poor soul get back to 1440x900!!! Some magically advice from fellow TLers that can really guide me to a solution asap!
Thank you!
P.S. For possible needed reference, this is my desktop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883109029
*Changes from the original build to current* 1. Windows Vista 64 bit -> Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit 2. NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE Graphics --> ATI Radeon HD 4850 3. Power supply 250W ---> Power Supply 650W 4. Regular generic keyboard -> Korean keyboard with Korean letters 5. Regular generic mouse ---> Logitech MX 518

system restore to a point before the power outage, sounds out there but i like shots in the dark but don't go system restore to like 1 year ago lol all youre files will be gone and random crap.

I'm looking at this atm and this doesn't seem like a good solution seeing how I have to actually modify my video cable which can damage or cause more problems. Plus it clearly state on warning that it's for CRT monitors and not LCD. I have a LCD monitor... But thank you for the assistance!

Would this really help???? I don't want to try this option yet unless I know this works and this is the only solution left. Everytime I do system restore, I get scared for all files I probably lost as well as possible further damage to my desktop..

Have you tried creating a custom resolution in the Catalyst Control Center?
The guide is intended for CRT because CRTs can run at a higher resolution than intended but it also works perfectly fine for LCD as evident in the comments. Another user also experienced this problem (not after power outage) and the solution worked for him: + Show Spoiler +

Rather, there is no option to make a custom resolution. I searched everywhere for that and I can't find it for my particular graphics card.. If it was all that easy I would be jumping in joy but sadly, I don't see it..
I read those two posts and it seems that's hit or miss and I have to see if I'm willing to give up a cable. Only problem is I don't have a spare VGA cable to replace since I only got one..

Well you've pretty much exhausted all options except semantic's which is to do a system restore.

I can't find any options and it's been 4 hours since this happened... fortunately,I can do system restore from yesterday or earlier today (but not choosing earlier today since it's like couple of hours ago and can't remember exactly what time the power outage happened). So I'll go back to yesterday's point and see what happens..
Before I do system restore, I downloaded and installed a new Control Center for my graphics card. So if I do system restore, it'll go back to the old one but will it be corrupted??
|
Yes it will go back to the old one. Not sure what you mean by corrupted (if you mean missing the resolution than quite possibly yes).
|
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! I just did system restore to yesterday where I clearly remember having 1440x900 and I'm on 1024x768 for some reason. Not only that but the 1440x900 is still missing from my choices....
System Restore did not help solve this problem. NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
My video get all screwed up and my macros screw up in any other modes....
I really need help!!! Any possible other solutions?!?!?

1400x1050 and 1440x900 are different aspect ratios. Maybe look for an option that will switch your monitor back to 16:10 ratio (1440x900 is 16:10) -- it might be in your monitors settings, accessed via the buttons on the front/size/wherever, instead of the settings in your computer.
I would almost guarantee that it's an option on the monitor, due to the fact that a) power outages typically either do nothing or totally fubar your software settings (i.e., the data on your hard disk), and b) system restore didn't do anything to fix it.

Hmmm.... yea, I've been trying that as well, finding buttons and options on my monitor.... no good... I had this monitor since 07 I believe. And I never had a problem like this ever before, I doubt 1 year of active usage, 1 year of being afk and then two years active usage shouldn't affect an early death of my monitor...
I still haven't found any option switching my resolution back to what I wanted... there is this manual stretch with ratio I found on my graphics card control center but you can't tell what the resolution is after you fix it....
Dammit so annoying... I can't even watch Proleague properly...

maybe try unplugging and replugging the cord connected to your graphic card from your monitor?

The other thing that typically determines what resolutions are available is just the video driver you're using; you might want to try removing your existing video drivers and re-installing the most up-to-date version for your card you can find online.

I also did that too.... still showed no option which really made me mad.... Like I had from the PL streams, I think something got fried during that power outage that prevents me to see 1440x900 no matter what... dammit...

a similar thing happened to me but with 1280x800 resolution (the option simply disappeared after i tried to create a custom resolution). i tried almost everything but the thing that fixed it in the end was simply un-installing all my nvidia graphic drivers and installing them again. i had no more problems after that. you could do this with your graphic drivers and i think it will solve all your problems.
be sure to uninstall them from Control Panel -> Uninstall a Program, then just search for them. Good Luck!

Man, this is the biggest crisis I have ever come across in computers!

Thank you!! I'm definitely going to try and do this. I'll let you know how this works and if I can fix my native resolution!! Thanks very much!
