So I purchased the SteelSeries Xai mouse over the christmas break. I really like the feel of it but sometihng felt off. So I figured I'd look into installing its specific drivers and to my surprise they don't support macs. I mostly play on a monitor/keyboard setup all attached to my pimped out MacBook Pro.

I'm curious as to what other drivers I can use or what other options I have for this mouse other than running windows in bootcamp constantly whenever I want to play SC2 (I hate doing this I love running Mac OS natively with all my gaming needs included)

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I think the main thing isn't the drivers but the fact that by default Mac OS has mouse acceleration and doesn't allow you to turn it off in the GUI.

To turn off mouse acceleration on Mac OS open your terminal and type the following:
defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1

This should make it feel a lot more snappy.

If you need to increase the sensitivity use the button on the Xai and not the Mac OS mouse settings window. If you open the Mac OS mouse settings window you will have to type out that command again because it overwrites it.

All of the driver settings are installed in the mouse. It was designed so you wouldn't need to install anything at a LAN. If you configure your settings in your Windows install, they'll still be there when you're running OSX. I don't know if all of the settings will transfer perfectly, but the DPI settings will.

Give USB overdrive a try. It worked for my Razer (also doesn't offer native Mac drivers).

Thank you very much for all the support. I'm going to try out vek's advice as I'd heard similar before. I'll mess around with the sensitivity on the Xai and see how I feel. Thanks again guys!

do this, you can simply setup how you like the xai to work in windows mode, save the Configuration to the mouse, then press and hold the middle button while using the lcd screen on the bottom of the mouse to select your settings, and voila.

Glad to help, I was tearing my hair out for months on my Mac until I found out about the secret mouse acceleration hehe

Your Razer comment is completely wrong. Razer is actually one of the best in supplying drivers for Mac users. I just got a DeathAdder and installed the driver and little control program onto OS X just as easily as with Windows and they offer all of the same functionality. In fact, the Mac drivers have been updated more frequently for the DeathAdder than the Windows ones.

SteelSeries doesn't support Mac with any of their devices. An example on top of the mouse stuff is that my 5Hv2 headset can only use the mic because I have the USB version with an internal soundcard and such (so, in other words, you only get to see a benefit when it stores stuff onboard like another person mentioned). It's rather frustrating and part of the reason why my new computer will probably be a Windows desktop (though I will keep my laptop as a purely OS X machine instead of getting it to multitask).

I love my MacBook Pro, but compatibility is a real bitch with gaming. BootCamp makes things feel onerous, and partition space causes constant micromanagement and reinstallation.

DA is one of the few mice that razer have mac drivers for =p they only have like 4 mice with mac drivers and 2 of them are just for basic functions not the same level as on windows. Granted this is better then what most offer which is 0 drivers. But the issue is that mac doesn't like more then the default reports a sec of 125hz in general apple has not been very friendly to gaming in general.

So you agree with what I said: "Razer is actually one of the best in supplying drivers for Mac users" cf. "Granted this is better then what most offer which is 0 drivers."

And, FYI, I counted around 7 Mac drivers at a glance on their page. Even with your lower amount, that's basically half of the mice Razer makes. That's pretty damn impressive, especially since it's mostly the models that actually matter that have support (like the DeathAdder).

I know that it was already mentioned, but I cannot express how valuable USB Overdrive has been for me. It has been able to adjust everything that I've ever wanted and is free. I'd strongly suggest giving it a try.

Maybe just don't play on macs anymore? Zing! Haha no I'm just kidding, but seriously. I've played on both Mac OS X and Windows of various varieties and the Mac OS X does have a very different feel on mouse movement. I always hated it for gaming so I only game on Windows now.

Just in case you didn't know this the graphics drivers for Mac OS X are much worse for gaming too. I have a buddy who's a mac freak and he literally installed Boot Camp ONLY to play SC2 because he got nearly twice the performance (on the same hardware mind you) with the Windows OS. I know you said you didn't want to install Boot Camp just for gaming but I thought I would mention this since it was enough to get a die hard Mac fan to put Windows on his precious Apple product.

Food for thought.

Actually, there is another problem, with Mac OSX, than the mouse acceleration : the polling rate. Curiously, OSX doesn't support more than 125Hz as a mouse frequency. I figured it out after buying my expensive/unefficient Saiph 3200.

If you want to know more about this curious issue :

http://dae.cyberic.eu/blog/mouse-cursor-skipping-jumping-bug-on-mac-os-x/#comment-4428

Personally, I've fixed that problem buying a Logitech G9X. I set up the polling rate thanks to the Logitech's driver (on a windows PC) then plug the mouse back to my iMac : works perfectly (the G9X has an inside memory so it reminds your settings whatever the computer you play on).

No pain, no glory...

Lately, every single time I log on StarCraft when I don't log on via bootcamp my mouse settings reset back to acceleration (annoying as piss once you aren't used to it). This issue remains even outside of SC2 until I reboot my MacBook. Every single time. Anyone know what I can do about this?

I also have this problem and i reported it in the blizzard tech support forum...
The thing is I can't tell if SC2 have behaved this way since release, I used USB Overdrive before X-mas but I got a Razer mouse with its own drivers but I didn't play SC2 until february.

I don't have the problem that it persists though, mouse acceleration shuts off when I close SC2 or tab out and clicks the desktop.

I don't know what to do, I could uninstall the Razer driver and reinstall the USB Overdrive.

I've used bootcamp for play lately because of this.
Got a problem?

Oh wow, this is a coincidence, My friend is trying to sell me a xai for 50$ but i told him that i'd think about it because there are no drivers for macs.

I was just about to make this same thread!

So, i can't really tell, did you ever get it to work fine?

I recently purchase Steelseries keyboard and mice/mouse and its working fine.

KEYBOARD
After some research I found how to make Steelseries 6g V2 working on mac. You can see my post about that in here:

MICE/MOUSE
For mice/mouse mac owners don't have much to choose from Steelseries.
