6Gv2 is the same thing as the 7G but it doesnt have 1)Headphone in 2)Microphone out 3)2 USB Ports 4)Wrist Rest
The 6Gv2 is $50 less than the 7G. Would it be worth to save up $50 extra then buy the 7G, i just think it will probably be more convinient to have the mouse plugged into the keyboard than your desktop. What are your guys thoughts?

I'm using a 6Gv2 right now, Love it so much. I don't miss the 2 usb ports or the headphone jack to be honest. Most people could probably do without it.

you dont the fancy frills of the 7g the 6gv2 is just fine and typing on one now
|
I purchased a 7g about 3 weeks ago on Nov. 28th and I like the 7g however the mic/headphone jacks and the two USP ports seem a bit overrated for $50 I'd say go for the 6gv2. However what I've noticed is that if you have a SteelSeries headset like the Siberia they seem to work very good with the 7g because of the short cords on the headsets, but it completely becomes null if you have the SteelSeries USB sound card or if you have a good place to have the headset connected. My two cents.
|
I have a tower for those ports, i don't need a keyboard, i love my 6gv2 though
|
I have the 7G, and I'd kill for the 6Gv2.
I don't use any of the extras and don't use the wrist rest (although it's nice I don't have the desk space). While the 6Gv2 has a bigger backspace which I'd actually love.
I'd swap my 7G for a 6Gv2 in a heart beat. That's my opinion so save yourself some cash.

One thing to keep in mind is that they both have quirky layouts. I think the 6gv2's is better than the 7g's, but they both have weird key positioning near the right enter key.

I was seriously considering the 6g over the 7g, however i then realized i wanted brown switches instead of the black
|
I have both myself. I bought the 6gv2 for MLG Dallas because I couldn't use my 7g due to its PS/2 connector.
Personally I prefer the 7g because of the right shift being bigger, and the backspace being smaller. I also generally like the feel of the 7g a bit more. And the wrist rest is amazing (but I use it with both my 7g and 6gv2)
|
As a side note to this, I was waiting for a while recently to order a 7G but it would seem that Steelseries is out of stock. I sent two support tickets into their store to ask about their supply and basically they responded with (paraphrased) "We don't have any. We don't know when we'll get any. You should buy a 6gv2". They literally seemed to have no clue if there was any plans to get more 7G's in stock or not. Was very odd...
So honestly this question is probably moot since you wouldn't be able to get a 7G (unless you found one on Ebay) anyway.
I ended up buying Filco (brown switch) keyboard from the classifieds at http://geekhack.org. Very very happy with it.

if you ever want to go to a lan you need the 6gv2
Also if you unplug your keyboard a lot you need to make sure and turn the computer off with the 7 otherwise you run the risk of doing some damage.

you cant buy it there..... see for yourself...Havent been able too for a while, sold out, out of stock everywhere. There are some "medal of honor" versions but a couple people say there is a problem with the MOH version. And I am not a medal of honor fan boy....Also the SS site doesnt have anywhere to pre-order so that is no help at all..

they only carried the 7g, and they took it off their website about a week ago.

The official SteelSeries shop keeps getting more in stock and then they go away again (for the 6gv2), so if you keep checking it should be back. It was off and on the whole time I was looking for keyboards.
The 7G has been out of stock for a while with no plans to get it in stock (as far as they know).
There seems to be a shortage of good mechanical keyboards with these guys and EliteKeyboards being out of stock... sc2 related?
|
The 6gv2 is back in stock on the Steelseries north america site.
|
The USB ports are only 1.0 so they're pretty useless apart from mouse (I have my LMO plugged into it). I don't use the wristwrest. So the extras aren't really a deal breaker. Great keyboard though
|
they are 1.1 btw and im probably going to get the 6gv2
|
I don't know if you've ever tried the Cherry MX Black switches, pushing down the switches for me at least felt quite stiff. however, that is coming from someone who uses Cherry MX brown switches so I could be inherently biased just because I am used to key switch press that is really light since the browns require less actuation force than the blacks.

It probably hasn't shipped yet since it's the weekend.

I seem to be almost alone with my opinion but I just love my 7G. You get used to the key layout really quickly and the large handrest makes it the most comfortable keyboard I've ever used - for gaming as well as typing.
If you don't plan on using the handrest anyway though, just go for the 6gv2. The ports etc. on the 7G are just luxury imho.
|
do people who use mech keyboards like the mx black push it until it actuates(halfway) or all the way down
|
Using my 6gv2 atm, and it's grrrrrrrrrreat! I don't know if I'd rather have the extra features of the 7g, I also think it's handrest is goofy-looking.

does pushing the 6gv2 keys really require that much force O_O!?

I think the 6Gv2, despite being cheaper, actually looks better to me. I have personally used it at my friends house, and I would not recommend it, just because I'm not a fan of Cherry MX Black switches, but that's just me.

I have a 6gv2.. I admit it was actually surprising at first how stiff the buttons are, but im more used to them now and I like the keyboard.
It makes sense, its sponsored by a bunch FPS team, the blacks are good for FPS gamers. They are also good for button mashers.
Personally, I'm sending it back once my DAS ( browns ) arrives, but would recommend it to others.

The 6Gv2 doesn't come with a palm rest; only the 7G. So, yes.
|
I had some giftcards to blow at Fry's and picked up a 7g, I dig it wuite a bit, little miffed it is ps2 only though so can't use it at lans, good thing I've got another KB for that but still I'd have liked to use this one, I really like the black switches.
|
I just bought a Steelseries 6Gv2 and I absolutely love it along with the black switches. If you have the extra money I would say pick up the 7G for the wrist rest and USB port and such, but I didn't buy it because I don't really want them to be honest. I really do love my 6Gv2 though, I would recommend it to anyone.
|
I like the wrist rest of the 7g a lot. I actually feel like because of that wrist rest I can take it anywhere and my setup feels the same as it does at home. Incontrol is right, when I went to MLG Dallas I was forced to use the Siig, but I don't think all LANs will force USB. And even then, there is a USB adapter, and due to that, it doesn't face the hotplugging issues. MLG still made USB adapters against the rule for some unknown reason though.
The headset and usb plugs are huge perks to me, but may not be for others.

I just grabbed my 6g v2 yesterday, I've been using the same 12 dollar dynex keyboard for like 3 years now, i used to rest my pinky on the edge of it while typing, and when i try to do that on this keyboard my hands are 1 button off all the time, i basically need to stare at my keyboard now when typing... I love small keyboards, i hope it doesnt take me long to get settled on this thing, i basically cant play sc2. and last night while playing league of legends, i hit R instead of E about 5 times. And if your not aware, the difference between E and R is about a 120 second cooldown and a massive ultimate ability that changes team fights.
all and all, great feel. I've never been a fan of wrist rests (yay carpal tunnel!). And if u need USB ports that bad, go spend 1 dollar on a hub.
|
Does the wristwrest from 7G fit onto the 6GV2?

Just got 6gv2 this morning; i'm coming from a mushy membrane dell keyboard; construction and looks are exactly as described in the numerous online reviews- it looks nice and sober and feels solid.
I bought this model because all the other mech cherry keyboards out there were twice the price (shipping to Belgium was the major issue for filcos, steelseries fortunately were available easily through germany) or looked like christmas trees. I wanted something solid and simple and not too expensive for a first try so i went for this one, thinking if i like mechs, I'll invest again the future.
Haven't tested it for sc2 yet. After 5-6 years on a 10$ membrane keyboard i can tell it will require some adaptation time and a slight change of typing technique. Typing feels very nice and smooth, wish it was a tiny bit louder or that there was a slight click/bump sound when the activation point has been passed because -and that is my main issue at this point but I guess I'll get used to it : I was used to bottoming out with membrane and bottoming out with the black cherries kind of slows down typing speed (at least for me right now) - fortunately bottoming out is not needed but getting the feeling on how much pressure has to be applied before fast jumping to the next key will probably take a few days/weeks before it is done properly.
I guess the problem would be more or less the same with brown cherry, maybe slightlyless important, but i guess it all comes down to adaptation anyway.....
Well, i only had it for a couple of hours, more feedback later on....
PS : right shift key could be a bit bigger, but again, i guess its all about getting used to it.
|
Eurekastreet if you wanted clicky tactile feel you should have gotten blues, which are arguably best for starcraft. Because the mx blacks are very linear most of the time you have to bottom out the key to get it to activate, added on with the increased activation force it makes the steel series mech's not the best choice when it comes to rts. Sure lots of pro's use them (notably idra) but you might want to consider the black widow or das with blues. I know one person who bought the 6gv2 and returned it because for him it simply was inadequate for cevo P css (primarily) and felt awkward in sc2.
the das is manufactured in germany so you would have had similar prices
|
^ it's untrue that you need to bottom out the key. it only took me a few days to get used to pressing keys only halfway by feel. i disagree w/ the other stuff you said too. have you even used the keyboard before? it sounds like you're just speaking from just second hand experience.
|
When deciding to buy a 6g or 7g myself I went for the 7g. Why I got the 7g:
- PS/2 and N-Key roll-over without adapter (I don't like adapter) - USB, which I use for my printer and USB tools, which I use only from time to time, but not for e.g. HDD, because it's just USB1.1 - audio I/O for headset - wrist rest which is very comfortable (doubles needed space on desktop) - layout, because I prefer the small backspace and large shift key
If I would not use all these, I recommend a 6gv2 due to being the same basic keyboard.
Typing on Cherry black keys is very comfortable, although many people say they are not the best for typing. (I type a lot on this keyboard due to my studies.)
Hope this post will help you.

People seem to be divided when it comes to the use of blacks for SC. I can say that for fps like unreal tournament it should do a great job since double tapping seem to work like a charm. Don't know about starcraft, guess I'll test it tomorrow or some. But if players like Idra manage to play with it, I guess it can't be that bad. I'm a below average sc player (kind of new to the game) so my apm is rather low, which should give me enough time to bottom out if I need it anyway. After a couple of hours using the keyboard, and testing it to do some "speed typing" I can say that I type already faster than I ever did on a membrane keyboard, not by much (10-20% but hopefully it will still grow a bit) due to the fact that you don't need to bottom out to activate the key and the keys react very smoothly. The counterpart is that I tend to double tap a letter every 50 strokes or so because I'm not sure i pushed the key far enough....when I usually did. But if I manage to "trust my fingers" and let go, that's when this keyboard seem to shine - it is much more reactive and precise than my old dell membrane pos...it's hard to explain, it's a bit as if I am the one that has to try and catch up with the keyboard, whereas the old one was always behind (and my typing speed is not even high at all, around 50 wpm or so, wonder what a 100+ would think of it). So all in all I think it'll be reactive enough for me as time goes by. I'm sure blues and browns have their benefits too, and a slightly different feel. The 6gv2 was about 80 euros, the das was 120 or some...not much more but still....I didn't want to invest too much for a first mech keyboard in case i was disappointed and I'm not sure the sound level of the das would not be a problem (the 6v2 is pretty silent in comparaison from what info I could gather online). Black widow is certainly a good keyboard, in the same price range but the looks of it were a no go for me, too many flashy lights, extra keys I would never use, and so on, I wanted something that looked....simple, a bit retro.
Now do I think it will make me a better starcraft player ? No, at least not at my level, maybe pros would benefit from the edge it brings to their apm (speed and precision) and general micro skills but for the average user, no. But it brings potential, if you come from membrane it will make you wanna work your apm/wpm which is not a bad thing and all in all is a nice object and makes you wanna try other keyboards (I'm sure I'll badly wanna try some blue and brown cherry in the future)
|
I must say, the 6gv2 is the best keyboard I have ever used. For the price it is better than the 7g.
after 3 months of using the mx blacks, I love them. It takes a while but you'll get used to them.

Please read iNcontroL (nested) quote
It is true that you should turn of your computer (shut down and power off) when unplugging PS/2 devices in general. You need to do this to ensure you motherboard does not take any damage. Because I'm a german and my technical english is not that good I will briefly explain in german, would be nice if sb. may translate for everybody. Thanks!

1. Do you have an ETA on more stock of these keyboards?
2. There is a "medal of honor" 6gv2 available for the same price, but the pictures for it look identical as the normal 6gv2... Can you explain the difference, or perhaps send me a picture of the actual keyboard? I do not play MoH, and do not want a MoH-themed keyboard.

Hi,
The MoH 6Gv2 is actually pretty much the same thing. Please be a non-Zerg player, because if you play Zerg, I will remove your account from this support system.
The 6Gv2 and 7G should be in stock within the next few months.

just order the regular one, i bought it when it was supposedly out of stock and i got it in in 4 days. as far as i know, they restock fairly quickly, they just run out fast.

I have the 6 as well, I love it so much that I literally cannot see myself switching to another keyboard EVER The only thing I'm still getting used to is the positioning of the keys around the Enter key, as the poster above mentioned, but its not a big deal really.

The big enter is a big advatage of this keyboard. When I was looking for mec keyboard 6gv2 got me with its layout. No more missclicking enter - \
|
The enter key is not my issue, it's the fact that i use RSHIFT more than LSHIFT. so i dont know how many times ive typed "|" instead of "?" and "\" instead of "/"... the "?" button should be directly next to shift, and it drives me INSAAAANE.
but i love this keyboard regardless.

I had a number of gift cards to use, so i went straight for the 7g. It was just a lot more appealing in the first place ... The backspace was the only thing that kind of annoyed me ... But I would rather the backspace smaller than the shift key. And the backspace only takes like a week to get used to
I absolutely LOVE the handrest ... It's perfect. And the closer plug-ins for my headset and mic are an added bonus.
I've never used the 6g, but i absolutely love the 7g and it's a great buy.
