I'm having a little problem with my Microsoft Sidewinder X5 that I just got.

If you see the mouse on the side it has two programmable macro buttons. I set the top one to A so that I can attack, The bottom one was set to P for patrol. In game however these buttons don't work! I have only tried them in single player which should work fine for testing these buttons, but obviously they didn't work.

The program that is used to program buttons is Intelli-type or something like that, It seems like they use the same program for a lot of their mice so people may be used to it, and would be able to help me with my problem.

For people who aren't used to this program some options it gives me when I choose to apply a macro to the buttons on the mouse are timings and delays, pretty much the normal stuff you can imagine would be available.

Thanks for any help!

That would make sense and would make me happy but dont keyboards with macro keys work? I got a microsoft sidewinder also(not x5) but i havnt bothered to try to use the macro keys for a game as i like keeping those buttons for back/forward and i think kb hotkeys would be way easier for things like patrol and attack. Very nice for internet and folders/files/browsing though.

i have a microsoft sidewinder too, and while i cant use them for ingame purposes they do work for other applications while sc2 is running. I use one as the push-to-talk button for mumble.

I sure hope it's Blizzard disabling them, because if they haven't it gives a very unfair advantage to people without a mouse with macros. Honestly, if you ever plan on playing in a tournament, you shouldn't use that mouse with macros enabled because I know for a fact that tournaments won't allow it.

In game however these buttons don't work!

Working as intended.

Using macros in RTS games is cheating.

As far as ive read on the sc2 forums from blizzard email responses, rebinding keys is allowed, but setting up your macros to do more than 1 action is not. I will try to find the responses and link them. http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/7158/macros2.png

If your keys/buttons are not working I would guess its something on your end. I don't think it would even be possible for blizzard to somehow disable your keys.

I have the X8, i used to use shift for my forward mouse button in the beta, but in SC2 it didn't work so i got used to not using it. Later i was curious as why it wouldn't work, so i changed my program specific settings on my mouse while sc2 was running, and sure enough next game my macros worked. The next day i tried to play and everything reset.
-To conclude, i have no idea why this is, but there is a work around. Personally i'd just get used to the keyboard though xD

This isn't an illegal macro, it's just a button on the mouse used to trigger a button on the keyboard.

For logitech there is an option to set up individual mouse buttons for each program. Maybe you have to manually set SC2 mouse buttons specifically for that program.

Consider calling tech support. They should be able to help you fix this easily.

Careful. Blizzard has stated they will start banning for cheats. Mouse and keyboard macros are considered cheats, in their opinion.

I hope this thread is not too old that I cannot post to it, but I wanted to ask about a macro that has no timing delay as what may be acceptable with the new SC2 keyboard with macros.

I built a macro that rebinds the grave key ( ` ) to execute 4 different, singular actions each time it's pressed for a total of 4 actions per 4 pushes of it.

Basically what it does is:
press 4 (where my queens are hotkeyed)
press backspace (centers over 1 of many hatcheries in sequence)
press v ( for spawn larvae)
clicks center of screen

There is no timing delay, as stated we cannot have, and only 1 action is performed per push.
Question 1: Is this just a horribly sinful macro abomination in the StarCraft II melee scene?
Question 2: Do you think Blizzard or the rest of the world would consider a sent mouse command outside the realm of legitimate macro binds?

In the past, the best way I did this without many buttons to 1 was to bind grave to backspace. Then it was just a matter of
4
` v
click
` v
click
` v
click

with my ring finger on grave and thumb on V.

Questions, comments, scathing rebukes and sentencing me to have 8 of my 10 digits cut off to delimit my ability to play an RTS?

It's really hard to say what is or is not allowed by Blizzard at the moment because there have been no banning waves for SC2 to date. In WoW, this type of macro could be created and saved to an account using the in game macro function. In SC2, there is no such ability to generate macros. Using one button to perform the function of multiple buttons (even if you have to press the button the same number of times) is essentially using a 3rd party program to gain an unfair advantage because the other players have no in game equivalent to perform the same function. I think remapping keybindings is allowed simply because different languages use different keyboards and people are not always pressing the same buttons to perform the same actions. I don't think Blizzard will have much tolerance for the type of macro you describe if they can detect it.

Ah ya thanks. It does seem a little miffing to use. For me, I'm a protoss player, and haven't the heart to try this out in a rated game 123 or 4. A macro like this in WoW where it just does a sequence of moves would have been fine I'm sure as that's built in, but this does seem to be a little off.

It's not like you can blame a zerg lover for thinking about it as having to cycle through multiple hatcheries to up your production is a lot of work. Not impossible, I'm sure, but even with this macro in some custom games (one in particular I just came from) even with this macro, I felt very short on production. Granted I never got a chance to extend to an expo.

I may just revert to grave backspacing as I'd be pretty miffed getting banned. So far, I've never hacked or cheated in any Blizzard game or was banned from game or forum. I'd know it's my fault though and take it like a man, rebuy SC2 and cut it out.

But it's not like the macro is flawless by any means, I could over hit it too many times and start up in the middle of the sequence or if I was 1 queen short of a 1:1 ratio, a queen might end up running back and forth to no use (which happened once). This justifies nothing of course.

The day Blizzard let people use macro keyboard/mouse in SC2 is the day I quit.
The point of an RTS is YOU and you only do as much move, as much action as possible in a short amount of time.
If you want the ONE keyboard button to do the job for you, may be SC2 isnt for you. Go play some WOW.
