Thanks for all the help everyone (especially skyR and Shikyo). Thanks to all the suggestions I think I have most of my hardware for my new rig selected. I'm gonna throw it up here again for any last suggestions. My previous build is post #2 on page 670.
Just a recap: My budget is $2,000 US (but I need all new peripherals with that 2K, peripherals also listed below), Resolution is 1900x1080, use is video games (Like skyrim) on very good settings and some video encoding, upgrade cycle is 2 years (although smaller adjustments can be made in between this cycle), I plan on buying it this week (from online retailers, and I'm located in the US), I plan on adding a second GPU and going SLI within the next year (will probably add more monitors when I do this), I do not need an OS, and I plan on overclocking the [reasonable] crap out of my CPU.
The Build
Case COOLER MASTER HAF 922 $90 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119197 I know I could go cheaper and smaller with my build, but I like this case because of the LED fans that come with it and the slick visuals.
Motherboard ASRock P67 EXTREME4 GEN3 $155 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157265&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&PageSize=10&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&IsFeedbackTab=true#scrollFullInfo A bit pricey, but it has really solid reviews from customers, and it will allow me to go SLI in the near future.
CPU Intel Core i5 2500K $190 ncix.us
GPU EVGA GeForce GTX 570 HD Fermi $333 ncix.us (view here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130621 )

Optical Drive ASUS 24X DVD Burner $20 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204
PSU XFX 850W Core Edition $75 (with rebate) http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63239&promoid=1208 Updated: Thanks skyR - A lot more power than I need at this point, but it will give me wiggle room for transitioning into an SLI setup in the near future.
Heatsink ZALMAN CNPS9900 NT 120mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler $41 (with rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118054 Very solid reviews, and extra peace of mind since I know from other customer reviews it fits with the motherboard (Weird heatshield on the P67 blocks some heatsinks). This, hopefully, will allow me to set a pretty good overclock on my i5.
Peripherals
Monitor ASUS VE258Q Black 25" 2ms HDMI LED Backlight Widescreen LCD Monitor $260 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236123
Headset Astro A40 Wired Headset with Mixamp $250 http://www.astrogaming.com/audio-systems/a40-audio-systems/a40-audio-system-astro-edition I like the look and mixamp feature. Pretty good customer reviews too. They are supposed to be pretty comfortable for long sessions.

TOTAL: $1,893(Not counting taxes and shipping fees)
Does the build seem balanced and solid? Any thoughts?

Fantastic, this is the exact kind of advice I was looking for, Ill leave this post here and edit it later on with the other details.
So you think I should not get the bundle and buy the Pentium G860, Gigabyte H61M-S2 and GSkill 4GB separate? Which makes sense since you say its better and cheaper. (I have no idea on the better part)
You mention that with a Radeon HD6850 or a Radeon HD6870 I would most likely have to get a new power supply but I think that with the money I save I would be able to get a new one anyway.
Ill update this post with my current specs in about 5mins.
EDIT:
Motherboard: Asus IPIBL-LA Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8400 CPU: Intel Quad core Q6600 @2.4GHz RAM: 6.00GB - Seems a lot higher than I remember but that's what it says here. OS: Currently running 32-bit vista. Power Supply: Bestec atx-300-12z
Everything is stock apart from some RAM I added a while ago, although my brother said that it would not be compatible with the mobo that was in the bundle, can't remember the reason.
I'm currently doing things on 1440 x 900, since if i go any bigger everything seems to crap out on me.

The Corsair TX750 V2 is available without a rebate for $99.99: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=58382&promoid=1208 If you want to deal with mail in rebates instead, the XFX Core Edition 850 is better for $105, $75 after mail in rebate): http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63239&promoid=1208
Remember that both power supplies are manufactured by Seasonic and based off the same design.
There is no $333 EVGA GTX 570 -AR (lifetime warranty). This: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=58573 is a -KR (three year warranty with option to pay for up to ten year warranty) variant. If you don't mind purchasing other brands, I'd look into getting this MSI GTX 570 for $289.99 ($259.99 after mail in rebate): http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=57383&promoid=1208
If you want to remain with EVGA -AR, you're going to have to wait for it to come back in stock at Newegg and NCIX or pay close to $365.98 for it (which btw I wouldn't advise doing): http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=57362
Crucial M4 is also a dollar less: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=60444&promoid=1208
The same DVD burner is also less on NCIX, $17.99: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=49597&promoid=1208
Rosewill for $100 doesn't seem that great, even with the $20 promotional gift card. I much rather get a Filco or Leopold from www.elitekeyboards.com
Remember that the NCIX sales ends on Wednesday and a new sale will start. These sales may or may not carry over to the next sale and there may be or may not be better sales.

You definitely need a new power supply.
Most if not all Intel processors are better than all of AMD processors when we are talking about gaming. See here, this is a comparison between the Pentium G850 (which is 100MHz slower than G860) and the Phenom II X4 970: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/404?vs=186
If your computer wasn't a HP, going from a Q6600 to a Phenom II X4 isn't really an upgrade at all as the two processors are about equal in IPC so overclocking your Q6600 would achieve the same results.
I would recommend just purchasing a new graphics card and power supply right now. I don't think the Q6600 is that bad for most games. If you're mainly concerned with Starcraft II than ya the processor would be your number one priority.
And I would also look into installing 64bit Vista or upgrading to 64bit Windows 7 to make use of all your memory. 32bit operating systems are limited to 4gb of addressable memory (which includes your graphics card memory and other things).
|
I'm looking at skyrim and battlefield for the moment too, the only problem is, the case is super small, so I'm going to have to get a new one of those to fit it in lol.
Looking on that comparison, the FPS on the Intel seems super low compared to the AMD, and FPS is something that I struggle with a lot, would that improve with a new graphics card or not so much?
|
You're misinterpreting the graphs. We're talking about gaming performance, not performance in multi-threaded applications or synthetic benchmarks. The Pentium is a dual core and the Phenom II X4 is a quad core so of course the Phenom will outperform the Pentium in the multi-threaded applications. Not to mention that the Phenom II X4 970 is much more expensive and is clocked higher.
The only games you find in the graphs is Dragon Age Origins, Dawn of War II, World of Warcraft, and Starcraft II. All of which the Pentium beats the Phenom by about ten FPS.
These $100 to $200 cards are about nine inches in length.
Upgrading from a Geforce 8400 to a Radeon HD6850 or whatever card will be a much bigger improvement than upgrading your Q6600 to a new processor for gaming. We're talking about more than triple the performance with the graphics card upgrade.
|
Ah, I see where you're coming from now, apologies for my ignorance, I've never build my own before D:
I think I will go down the path of buying a Radeon HD6850 or something similar, overclock my business and a get my hands on a new power supply.
Ill try and get my hands on a 64-bit windows 7 too, it's about time I got windows 7 anyway.
Thanks for all the help Appreciate it.
|
You have a prebuilt so I wouldn't advise overclocking your Q6600. Even though it's a very good processor capable of around 3.5GHz, the motherboard in your prebuilt probably isn't capable of such an overclock and you are probably locked out of these options in the BIOS anyways since it's an HP.
|
Ah, well, I'll do some investigation into the overclocking part, but thanks for the overall help
Just to wrap it up, would you say AMD Radeon HD 6850 and 550W Powercool Power Supply PC550AUBA plus something like Inwin Griffin Yellow Midi Tower would be a good decision for graphics card, power supply and case.

No. I've never heard of Powercool before and I'm going to assume it's shit based on the amount of connectors and warranty. Wattage also doesn't mean anything as some manufacturers overlabel, rate it as peak instead of continuous power, or the majority of wattage isn't on the 12v rail (the rail that powers the GPU and CPU - the two most power hungry components).
The XFX Core Edition Pro 450 is better (and probably provides more power, I can't seem to find data on the unit you mentioned atm): http://www.cclonline.com/product/55411/P1-450S-XXB9/Power-Supplies/XFX-Pro-450W-Power-Supply-Unit-Core-Edition-/PSU0202/ This is also more than enough power for your configuration fyi.

Awesome! I will switch to the 850w.
I don't mind switching brands. Will this 570 perform the same/better as the EVGA model? There's gotta be some reason for it being considerably cheaper right?

Awesome! I will switch to the 850w. I don't mind switching brands. Will this 570 perform the same/better as the EVGA model? There's gotta be some reason for it being considerably cheaper right? Thanks for pointing that out, I will purchase those products from ncix. Rosewill for $100 doesn't seem that great, even with the $20 promotional gift card. I much rather get a Filco or Leopold from www.elitekeyboards.comHave you tried using a rosewill before? How come you prefer these others? I was going off a recommendation from a friend for the rosewill, but I've never tried any of these.
Rosewill is a Newegg brand. I've never used it before but I don't expect them to have the same quality as the Korean, Japanese, and other Asian manufacturers manufacturers such as Leopold or Filco.
I didn't look at both models but the MSI GTX 570 is a reference design with a blower heatsink (exhaust out the case). Clock speed doesn't really matter since you can modify it yourself in MSI Afterburner or other software.
MSI or NCIX may just be getting rid of stock so that's why it may be less expensive. EVGA does offer better warranty though (EVGA also has the option of paying to extend your warranty on -KR models), but both are three years for parts (MSI is two years for labor so you'll be paying for labor in the third year).

Have always wondered why this thread isn't stickied.

I know the Rosewill brand have been discussed in th Mechanical Keyboard Guide thread. If I remember correctly people find them pretty good (I think they are rebranded, but I don't remember exactly). Read more and ask in that thread.

Well in 2 years if my card dies at that point I might be looking into getting a new card anyways. So the warranty isn't much of an issue with me. I looked over the specs of the MSI and the EVGA model, and both seem to be very similar. I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but it looks like the MSI is a much better buy for me. I'll get the MSI model instead of the EVGA. Thanks!

I liked them a lot better than the Razer Blackwidow or whatever it's called. Whether it lasts long I don't know, but it's definitely not of bad quality AFAIK off the bat.

Looking on that comparison, the FPS on the Intel seems super low compared to the AMD, and FPS is something that I struggle with a lot, would that improve with a new graphics card or not so much?
skyrim and bf3 will probably be optimized for quads

Hey all, I was wondering about opinions on this build. I am finally building a PC, after years of just gaming on a laptop due to money reasons. I am not very experienced with comparison shopping/etc and was wondering if anyone had any advice/modifications for my build. I was looking around and just decided I liked the 800$ build from the "Optimized Builds for every budget" thread. .That is:
Motherboard: MSI P67S-C43 (B3) Processor: Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
Graphics Card: GIGABYTE GV-N560OC-1GI GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB
RAM: Pareema 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912
Power Supply: Antec Neo Eco 520W
Optical Drive: SAMSUNG CD/DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-222AB - OEM
I plan on using this for gaming and mild recording. I have an external sound card that's pretty decent, and I believe the processor is OK for my needs (I can max out any processor with music creation with filters/multi tracks that I love but this one seems decent enough). I am hoping I could stream with this but that is in no way a priority (don't wanna spend extra just for that, it would be more of a bonus. Here are my major questions:
1) Simple enough, does any-one think there are better/comparable options? My price range is 800 for the comp. If anyone knows of any deals/better components then what I have for round the same range I'd love to hear about it. Tigerdirect has one or two of the things I want on sale soon so I'm probably gonna get half from tiger half from newegg.
2) Is that mobo and PS OK to overclock with? I've never really done it and I'm curious what that would be like while using ableton and that type of thing. Again, I don't need a crazy OC-able comp but I'm curious if this build would allow me to do that.
3) Could I stream with that? Assuming my uload speed was fast enough, would that processor handle, say 720p streaming at a decent resolution? I know that's a general question but again I'm not buying this to stream, just to game without lag, so any streaming possibilities are a bonus.
Thanks! This thread has already been invaluable I read through soo much of it. I'm not unfamiliar with hardware specs and so on, but I haven't built a PC in like 5 years at least.
edit: my friend offered me a PS, case and cpu fan. I'm trying to find the actual part names but it's a 650W PS and the case has a bunch of fans. I'm thinking if they are solid then I'll get a heatsink so I can OC since it seems like I can't without it.
