http://www.anandtech.com/show/4648/rosewill-thor-v2-the-god-of-cooling-and-silence/5 Idle noise levels are lower than the other cases, and the load noise levels in their charts are pretty much always dominated by the blower-style GTX 580. Btw the Silverstone SG07/08 (mini-ITX) have the only fan as a 180mm AP as top intake. The normal ATX midtower PS06 has an 180mm AP intake on top as well, in the spot where most midtowers have an exhaust. Convection seems to be a pretty small factor compared to actual fan blades. That said, exhaust on top is probably better for performance in most situations.

Since Dell has 20% off on refurbished laptops right now I thought I should take a look, and was rather surprised at just how cheap some of them are. 1) My general impression is that a refurbished laptop isn't particularly less reliable than a new one. Am I mistaken? Should I avoid refurbished laptops? 2) Would this particular laptop be a good deal? $639.20 ($868.20 with 3 year warranty) + Show Spoiler + Processor: Intel Core i5-2410M processor (2.30 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 2.90 GHz) Hard Disk Drive 500 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM) Memory 4 GB DDR3 ECC SDRAM 1333MHz (2 DIMMs) Media Bay 8X DVD +/- RW Drive Video NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M 1GB graphics Laptop Screen 17.3 inch FHD WLED TL (1920x1080) 3D 3) I am aware that the video card is the weak point here. How much would a 550m limit my ability to play games like, say, Skyrim on medium settings? How would it handle SC2? The fast that I could get this sub-$900 with a 3 year warranty is very tempting for me. There's a very decent chance that sometime in the third year I'll have been able to report enough cumulative problems that they'll replace the laptop.

I wouldn't get it as refurbished, but maybe that's just me. I'm not a fan of anything refurbished when it comes to computer components. Regardless, I would say that would be a decently good deal for a new laptop (better than average), but nothing beyond mediocre considering it's marked down fom being refurbished.

I've been looking rather intently for a while now, this would be quite significantly more than a "decently good deal" if it were new, it would be extraordinary. Perhaps on Black Friday it might only be decently good, any other time it would be exceptional.

Perhaps on Black Friday it might only be decently good, any other time it would be exceptional. I already said it would be better than average, I don't think it's exceptional by any means, I've seen far better laptops selling new for $750 on sale, but packing def more htan $110 worth of hardware (better GPU and processor). Looking quickly on Newegg, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152264. With the extended two year warranty it's only $760, and the GPU is only marginally (~10%) worse than the one you linked. I was comparing it to the price you gave including the warranty simply because I personally wouldn't buy a laptop refurbished without a warranty, but once again, that could be me. http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/load_configuration.do?destination=review&config_id=6578767&aoid=35252 Also with a coupon code for about $125 off, you could get this setup new for around $799, with an i7 instead of i5 and a 6770M, which I believe is superior to the GT 550M, but I'm not incredibly good with laptop GPUs. Coupon Code: NBQD1694 Intel Core i7-2630QM 2GHz Quad-Core Sandy Bridge 6 GB RAM 6770M GPU 640 GB 7200 RPM Blu-ray player It comes with a free xbox360 if you're a student, if not, get a student to buy it for you! Although I admit that's starting to get out of the price range.

CPU is ok for a budget build, although you might want to wait like 3 weeks for AMD's new line of Bulldozer processors to be released. That mobo, when googling, is so overly expensive you would actually save money by going with a more expensive intel build and getting $60 mobo instead of the $140 that's listed on newegg for. You don't need such a overkill PSU. The RAM shouldn't cost more than $40, PSU no more than ~$60, HDD seems ok.

The site I primarily use for this is pccasegear.com and because I live in Australia the prices are a little higher. So from browsing this thread and some forums I've come up with this build: CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition: $119 HD Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB HD103SJ: $69 GPU ASUS Radeon HD 6850 DirectCU V2: $179 RAM G.Skill F3-10600CL9D-8GBNT (2x4GB) DDR3: $49 Motherboard ASRock 880GMH-LE/USB3 AM3 Motherboard: $79 PSU Corsair CX-430 V2 Power Supply: $59 Case Antec One Hundred Case : $65 DVD drive ASUS DRW-24B3ST 24X DVDRW Drive: $25 TOTAL= $644 The only items that I'm not sure of is the case and motherboard. This build is pretty low end and its really only for the short term (2 years). Other than general advice on how well the parts fit one another, I want to know if this build is viable to play the very new games (specifically skyrim) on a high setting. You should probably be unsure about your processor as well . For less price you could get an i3-2100 and an Asrock h61m-vs motherboard. I don't know much about cases, but I've seen the BitFrenix Shinobi recommended on the last page or two, and that's a few bucks cheaper than the Antec. *shrug*Depends what he's using it for, while the i3 would be a better choice if he wants a gaming build, he didn't really specify anything beyond "low end." Gaming will be the only intensive thing I do with this computer so no streaming, encoding, etc. I've done some googling on MisterFred's advice and found that i3 is preferred when compared to phenom || in gaming. With some changes I think I'll save $23 by switching phenom || 955 with i3 and asrock 880 with an asrock h61m. Does anyone here have experience with i3 and a radeon 6850? Assuming I completed the rebate too late for the 6850 I might buy this to SAVE $11 and get improved performance (I am hoping). There is nothing wrong from upgrading a 6850 to GTX 560 right? Damn there is no Anandtech benchmark on the GTX 560, could someone tell me if I would notice a difference from ATI 6850 to GTX 560? I know they would both play smoothly in SC2 Ultra, but just the overall performance. EDIT: FUCK MY LIFE MY 6850 MANUFAC'S WARRANTY IS OUT.

@SkyR, thanks, though I was looking at the benchmark for the 6850 vs 560 comparison. Another question, should I have speedstep technology enabled or disabled when overclocking to 4.2 GHz. I have Turboboost disabled, but what about PLL Voltage Override (Disabled/Enabled) Is there a way to alter the minimum core speed from 1.6 GHz? nvm speedstep locks my multiplier at 33 What do you guys mean register the product?
