Its response time is 2ms (faster than all other monitors in its price range). People say the ms thing can be bs, but I doubt a good company like ASUS would do such thing. MLG uses this monitor for HALO as well, if it makes you feel better. The monitor is $199, which is probably not worth a $40 difference (not even sure if it is better) than the ASUS V236H.

For years now I have been bouncing the idea of building my own computer around in my head, but never being confident in my abilities to decide on a build. This thread is a fantastic resource, and I thought I might try asking for TL's help since I am hardware-retarded, to say the least. What is your budget? Fortunately money isn't the biggest issue, however if possible I'd like to keep my build under $2000. From what I understand this shouldn't be a problem, however I am including the price for completeness sake. What is your resolution? Ideally I would like dual monitors, with resolutions of 1920x1080 if possible, but 16 : 9 nonetheless. What are you using it for? My computer will have 2 main uses: 1. Gaming - Of course it is irresponsible of me to provide this as my primary use (and I feel a little guilty doing so) but I do love my video games, and having them run smoothly for me is important. 2. Data Processing - I will be working with quite large datasets of financial data (often as big as 1GB) for both school and work (as well as my own finances). I need to be able to run programs such as Stata on the computer. Also, I will be doing some mathmatical modelling on programs like Matlab and Maple (mostly for school). What is your upgrade cycle? I cannot see myself being someone going out and upgrading overly often, and I imagine my upgrade cycle would be about 2 years. When do you plan on building it? Hopefully, I can be building this computer quite soon, I'd like to have it up and running by October if that is possible, or even sooner. School starts by mid September so if I was able to beat that date it would be great too. Do you plan on overclocking? I know so little about these things that I'm unsure if I plan on doing this. Is it inadvisable? Is it necessary? I'm sorry I cannot provide a more helpful answer to this question. Do you need an Operating System? I currently run Vista Ultimate (that I got for free, through legal means I might add), but am considering moving up to 7. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Is this recommended for my gaming? Will it vastly improve the graphics/performance of the games? I know little of these things, so again I unfortunately can't adequately answer this question. Where are you buying your parts from? I live in Canada, and am within walking distance of a Canada Computers at both my houses, so if possible I will buy my parts from there and save on the shipping costs. Otherwise, both ordering from Canada Computers and NCIX is what I imagine I will be doing. Thank you very much, I think what you are doing here is absolutely wonderful, helpful, and hugely generous. I couldn't believe it when I sent a PM inquiring about proper etiquette for this site and finding a quick answer about just answering the questions and getting your help putting together an entire build.

http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=257286 My blog (though not finished) gives you a general idea of 80% of the parts and what they do. You will get Windows 7 lol, its $100 and with such a high budget it shouldn't be a big deal at all. Dual GPU is recommended as an upgrade later on, as you usually would get better performance with one good GPU. And as Jingle says, dual GPU is for people who enjoy tweaking the tiniest stuff for a few FPS, something the majority of us do not understand (I assume you don't). Unfortunately you would have to get someone like SkyR to give you the actual links for the parts, as I have no experience in picking Canadian products (I only use Newegg, and never used NCIX). I will give links on what I can. 8 GB DDR3 RAM http://ncix.com/products/?sku=57953&vpn=F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL&manufacture=G.Skill Intel Core i7 2600k (Holy crap thats expensive in Canada) http://ncix.com/products/?sku=57960&vpn=BX80623I72600K&manufacture=Intel + Show Spoiler + I want to recommend a GTX 590 but that would be stupid. Nvidia GTX 580 http://ncix.com/products/?sku=56629&vpn=VCGGTX580XPB&manufacture=PNY Technologies Inc&promoid=1367 Those are the main components, as to the others sorry, but the Canada product picking is too difficult for me. The others you would need can be found in my blog.

Now that I think of it, there is almost no reason right now to get an X58 board for your needs. You could even go with a P67 if you wanted to, but with your budget it wouldn't really make that much of a difference. You would probably have about $500-600 leftovers with my an i7 2600k, GTX 580, and Z68.

Certainly for a $15-20 investment including the spare cable, it seems reasonable, I use them, but I've never had to do anything special to get one. And yes, a surge can come through the router, but it's much less common now that we aren't using telephone modems.

It's not the most common thing to use, but it isn't a terrible idea if you have frequent or severe thunderstorms. I had a really hard time finding one for less that $50 that wasn't just a phone jack surge protector rather than ethernet
