When using this resource, please read FragKrag's opening post. The Tech Support forum regulars have helped create countless of desktop systems without any compensation. The least you can do is provide all of the information required for them to help you properly. |
What is your budget? 800$ CAD MAX (can go upto 900 with SSD, hopefully around 750 without ssd) Looking at the Crucial M4 SSD Micron C400 64GB at 114$
What is your resolution? 1920 x 1080
What are you using it for? 50% gaming, 50% surfing/movies/office
What is your upgrade cycle? As long as I can get
When do you plan on building it? This weeks NCIX deals (unless there arnt any good deals)
Do you plan on overclocking? if budget allows i5-2500k (but I think ill have to go with a 2400 or 2300)
Do you need an Operating System? No
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No
Where are you buying your parts from? ncix or any other good site.
Other info: I want at least an H67 mobo for USB3 and SATA3 (will add SSD now or later)

I just put together my computer, and I'm running a HAF 922 case with a ASRock Pro3 motherboard and a 500w power supply (PCP&C Silencer). For some reason the top fan on the case isn't running. Anyone have any ideas? Edit - Fixed by using a different connection to the powersource. However, I noticed that my i2500k is idleing at 46c... does that seem too high? I thought for some reason it should idle lower.

That's a reasonable idle temp, depending on about a million different factors, but it's nothing to worry about as long as load temps aren't melty.

I thought I was hearing much lower idle temps for some reason. Ill run somme tests later today and see how things go.

Temps depend on so many factors that it's damn near impossible to go by someone else's to determine what yours should be. As long as the actual temps are acceptable, it's not really worth sweating.
Ambient temp, CPU cooler, case, GPU configuration, thermal paste used, thermal paste application, fan speeds, OC, voltage, just to name a handful. Some of those are big differences, some of them are minor differences. They all add up, and it turns into far too complex a scenario to expect identical anything.

I have yet to find an answer, is it a bad time right now to buy a SB processor? I do believe BullDozers will exceed the performance of SB, regardless that they will get owned by IB. The BD 4-6 core price is probably similar to those of SB, but with better performance. However, it keeps getting delayed, as it was announced to be late July.
Should computer buys still buy SB CPUs right now, or wait for BD?
|
BD is highly unlikely to beat SB outside of extremely well-threaded apps. Unless you have a need for the physical cores, of course. I'm basing this assumption off of the delays and recent history. AMD hasn't caught up with Intel recently in terms of raw power, and if they were even close on price/performance, let alone performance, they wouldn't have delayed release. That implies they're working desperately to try and get closer.
|
I don't understand much about CPUs, but it feels like AMD is way too slow. They have been given almost eight months to beat the SB and Core i processors, and are struggling to do so. Would it be that difficult?
|
If you are in no hurry and expect Bulldozer to outperform Sandybridge than wait until September 19th when it's expected to launch.
|
I hope they do so intel will have no choice but to lower their prices.
|
Jingle expects BD to not outperform SB for the most part, what's your opinion on that skyR?
|
For anyone purchasing soon and near a microcenter, don't forget that they're running an $40 off special with any sandy bridge processor and mobo right now.
Basically, if you get the mobo and CPU from them, you get to take $40 off the price. Considering that without any promos, microcenter already beats newegg on CPU prices, this is kinda awesome.
You can build a nice budget build i3-2100 with an H61 mobo for $124.78 AFTER taxes right now. That's a hard price point to beat.
And the code obv works with i5-2400's and i5-2500k's as well.

You asked me this before and my answer is no.
|
My bad, I remember but all I actually recall is you saying that IB will stomp BD regardless.

For anyone interested in mATX/mITX builds, Anandtech has a review of silverstone's new TJ08-E case.
Long story short, solid thermal performance for single GPU solutions, decent acoustics, but not amazing. Apparently it's just a bit of a pain in the ass to build in, but that's just because they squeezed so much stuff into such a small case. It also, by some of their wording, seems to have room for average sized 160mm coolers like the Hyper 212+ or Gaia.

I actually went with similar build that Skyr posted for Voltaire, difference was that Myrmidon had me buy some most generic, plain black tower that looks like a brick, yet somehow after initially laughing at its picture i started leaning towards purchasing it, I love simplicity and value.
Now it doesn't fit under my desk so I will have to cut a chunk of wood off the back, no biggie. I love the mean look though.
Had a lot of fun with that, I didn't fuck around with computers for years (probably since intel 80486 lol). Almost everything worked smooth out of the box, just don't freak out before you've installed all the mobo drivers. Processor went in no problem, little scary when you have to press hard to lock it in but I was prepared. Blue Caviar is a great buy, I actually loved every component. You should see the BIOS menu this mobo has, it's so lovely. made me feel like such a neanderthal.
Processor temp was a bit hot in the beginning, some poster above noticed that, but I guess that preapplied thermal compound could take some time to settle down or w/e, now it's in low 30s instead of 42.
Every component is just so solid, thanks guys. DVD RW is pretty simple ( as in simple as a box of rocks) but it was great value and it does what it's supposed to do. 500$ after mail-in rebate, that felt great.

^^Sounds great, what build did you end up going for? It's hard with so many pages ;=)

Actually you can use the search function for posts with his name in them in Tech Support, and check results from this thread. Pretty easy. If you don't know how, search for the guide I did on searching TL.

Hey guys I want to build my own computer but however what is killing me on the inside is that I don't know if these parts will all fit together and will it run. I don't want to leave info on why I picked those parts, where I'm getting them and so on because I just want to know if they will fit together as I am new into this sort of thing, I will be getting help putting it together I just don't want to buy the parts and then realising they won't fit. Alright this will be my setup. (I don't know if this is a good thread to post this in forgive me in advance ,)
MotherBoard: ASRock P67 Extreme6 (http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=P67%20Extreme6)
CPU: Intel i5 2500k 3.3ghz,Might pick the i7 sandy bridge (http://ark.intel.com/products/52210)
RAM: Kinda undecided, most likely a 2x4 GB DDR3 1333MHz
GPU: AMD Radeon 6870 1GB DDR5 (http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/amd-radeon-hd-6000/hd-6870/Pages/amd-radeon-hd-6870-overview.aspx)
PSU: ATX 12 V Version 2.2, 1000W, 240Volts
Case: Coolermaster HAF 912 plus (http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cases/2010/09/27/cooler-master-haf-912-plus-review/1)
HDD: 1TB SATA2 with 7200 rpm
Thats it, please let me know if something is insuffiecent but don't comment on I could get away with something cheaper, thx.
